Well, it's later so I suppose I'll chime in with at least a few comments about last night's very enjoyable outdoor show.

 

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) it was the third time Wilco has played on the street in front of the Blue Note club and I've always found it to be, for the most part, one of the most easygoing and pleasant crowds at any outdoor gig I've seen. At least toward the front, most folks seemed happy and excited to be able to see Wilco in the relatively intimate confines of 9th Street.

 

Setlist-wise, we got both Missouri staples — New Madrid and Casino Queen — so that was fun. Jeff said something to the effect of while the band plays "hometown shows in a lot of different places, this always feels like the 'homiest towniest.'" And he gave an extended shoutout to longtime Blue Note impresario Richard King, saying that "while he might not put up as many posters as he used to," area music fans were lucky to have someone like him working on their behalf. "Not every town has a place like the Blue Note," Jeff said. Then he led the crowd in three cheers for Mr. King, in the form of "Hip, Hip, Hooray." When that was finished, in typical Jeff deadpan, he said, "So that's how that's done. OK, back to sadness," then launched right into the opening chords of Impossible Germany.

 

After Germany, Jeff pointed out that Nels had played that song with a high ankle sprain..."so high that it was in his wrist." So apparently Nels has a bit of a wrist ailment. Some people noticed that he was periodically rolling his left wrist a bit, perhaps trying to keep it loose.

 

Jeff also made a point to thank Jonathan Richman for opening the show. This was the first of a number of shows Richman will open on this year's final leg of domestic touring (though it's not the first time he's opened for Wilco; I'd forgotten last night while at the show that he also opened a short West Coast jaunt in late 2001, if I'm not mistaken). Anyway, Jonathan and his longtime drummer Tommy Larkins turned in a charming 30-minute set last night. I scribbled down some semblance of a setlist, which I'll post later. But as I mentioned, Jeff thanked them for playing and said Wilco was "the luckiest band in the world." He added that Richman is "one of the true heroes of American music, and don't you (the audience) forget it."

 

What else? Oh, during the encore, Jeff mentioned that the band had been touring for about a year now in support of The Whole Love and for those who have been keeping track, there is one song off the record that the band has yet to play live. For a second, I thought we might actually get the debut of Sunloathe. But alas, Jeff quickly quashed that idea. He did, however, say that we should keep our eyes open this week for the release of a video for the song made by drum tech Nate Murphy (who, incidentally, was decked out in an amazing leisure suit and wig combination).

 

Meanwhile, in tonight's episode of guitar geekery, Jeff used an orange Epiphone model that I hadn't seen before (similar to the white one he's been using on At Least That's What You Said) on Box Full Of Letters. He even joked that it was like "having a girl in the band...that's something to look at." Realizing how his comment could come off, Jeff immediately backtracked after the song, clarifying that he only meant that if there was a girl in the band, pretty much any one would be more pleasant to look at than any of the current band members and saying that he didn't want to get any letters/calls/etc., from any women's groups or feminist organizations. Haha.

 

Other noteworthy guitar bits included the rainbow SG making an appearance for I'm The Man Who Loves You, which I know delights at least a couple members of this community. And though it wasn't announced, Nels played what appeared to be Duane Allman's gold Les Paul for the final two songs of the evening.

 

(EDIT: Forgot to mention earlier that I think Glenn also got a new drum set for this run. Someone told me they had talked to him and he said this was just the second show he had used them, the first presumably being the Hideout Block Party. I noticed it was missing The Whole Love artwork on the bass drum, so perhaps they're still waiting for it to come in?)

 

I guess that's about all I've got to report. All told, the band played about 2 hours and 10 minutes, coming on a hair past 8:15 and finishing up at 10:25. I thought we might get Hoodoo Voodoo to close things out, but after glancing at a printed setlist, there didn't appear to be any deviations. Jeff did somewhat jokingly mention that it was the band's second show of the day since their soundcheck earlier in the afternoon was essentially a free public mini-concert for anyone who happened to walk by. I think about 50 to 60 people (not including those working the show) ended up watching the band run through Can't Stand It, Say You Miss Me, One By One, Country Disappeared and a fragment of Art Of Almost.

Sounds like a really fun show! I wanted to point out that audiences in places other than Missouri would love to hear New Madrid sometime, but I realized it won't do me any good for the rest of the year anyway ... so forget I said anything. I wonder if Nate's new video will mean Sunloathe sees a debut on the West Coast? That was a thought last time they were in CA, if I remember correctly.

I know Wilcobase has evolved with the official band site and isn't completely up to date or accurate either, but it's certainly more reliable than setlist.fm when it comes to Wilco.

lol, of course I believe you! setlist.fm is a fan based clearinghouse, so I cross referenced the Blue Note/Columbia on Wilcobase and found the search function a bit messy for my sleep deprived brain. Mostly wanted to get a feel for why tiny Columbia is the 'homiest towniest' hometown they play (aside from the obvious).

They also played the Blue Note on October 6th, 1995 - it was a Friday and Saturday 2 night run. And on Saturday October 7th they played twice - once in the afternoon in front of the Columbia Courthouse and then later in the evening at the Blue Note. I have master recordings of the 10-6-95 Blue Note and 10-7-95 in front of the Courthouse but unfortunately was not able to stick around for the 10-7 night Blue Note show.

 

Oh yeah, great show last night! I love these Outside on 9th street Wilco Shows.

Ah, the song that gave me my username! I got to hear some of it right along with you, Chris, because Melissa called me. I'll bet the sound quality was a heap better on your end, but it was wonderful to be (mentally anyway) "Outdoors on 9th Street" again. Sounds like it was a fantastic show!

What will be really interesting is if Wilco & Jonathan will play together at any point (Roadrunner?) When Nick Lowe started opening for them back east they didn't play together but added that bonus after a few shows.

Nice setlist from Jojo. Seeing him opening for Wilco must have been so great. Hopefully him touring with Wilco will get more people into him. He's a national treasure.

Just realized I never replied to this. Thanks for the kind words, sir! And I'm definitely becoming a JoJo Swaying Hips devotee myself. Definitely helps to have folks like him or Sir Nick (and their vast repertoires) on board when doing a longer run of shows. Last night in southern Oregon, JoJo was in fine form, as you say. I posted the setlist in that thread, if you care to have a look.

 

And PS, I'm still waiting for some collaboration as well, though I'm not certain it will happen...
