I'm pretty excited about the bonus material. In '72 all but about a half dozen of the 80 or so shows featured either Dark Star or The Other One. The 11/15 OKC show that's part of the bonus stuff was one of the shows that didn't have either tune, but instead we get a brain frying 30 minute Playin as the centerpiece of that show! I'm a Playin' guy so this is excellent news.

Wow, sold out in less than 24 hours. Impressive.

I guess The Dead will be on the Billboard charts again then.  :thumbup

I am the opposite - still waiting on my ABB set. I ordered Blu-Ray and they mistakenly sent CD's. The CDs showed up last Thursday - I almost "mistakenly" opened it, just so I could listen to the set over the weekend - but opted out.

I'll be interested to read what you think of the 5.1 surround sound mix.  I've read that it sounds like you're sitting front row center of the Fillmore, all the music coming out of the front speakers and crowd ambient sound coming out of the rear surround sound speakers.

It was 40 years ago today, August 6, 1974, I stepped into Roosevelt Stadium, the Orange Sun was Shining brightly, the Wall of Sound was staring us down, a beardless Jerry and band stepped out into the sunshine and kicked into Bertha, and away we went.  First show. At least I've been enjoying the ride.

Last night, I listened to the latest Dave's Pick - good stuff, of course. After first listen, the highlights for me: Cumberland Blues; Jerry plays great on Me and My Uncle and Big River - great licks; enjoyed the Casey Jones, too.

Need to listened to the He's Gone through Brokedown Palace again - it was getting late in the evening.

Haven't listened to the filler yet.

So many highlights:  Playing>Scarlet>Playing (in first set!), and that monster Sugar Mag jam sequence in the second set.  Can't believe I got a Spanish Jam at my first show (although I'm sure I didn't appreciate the significance as I would later).  Definitely a show for the ages.

It looks like Garcia has beard in that picture above.

I guess some of the show was released on Dick's Pick 31

  • Playing In The Band (Weir / Hart / Hunter)

8/6 is a favorite of mine. Got the tapes early on and played the shit out of 'em.

THE WIND BLOWS HIGH

Trees whip to the ground, the clouds are streaming

To think I would ever live to see this day

Beneath an angry sky the crowd is screaming

It's clear that someone's got to pay

I cannot account for where I've been

Never thought I'd need an alibi

Open up the sky and let me in

Oh - the wind blows high

I see you coming in the morning soon

Unwrap your blue guitar, play a merciful tune

Wipe a final tear from a dead man's eye

Oh - the wind blows high

The wind blows high and the wind blows low again

There's a shaking in the ground like the world might end

Voices of the sea and sky contend

The wind blows high and the wind blows low again

Through these wicked sheets of driving rain

I can hear the whistle of a train

Someone's gone away and never coming back

The crew's already tearing up the track

Track by track they cart the road away

Rail by rail the pile mounts to the sky

Does it always have to end this way?

Oh - the wind blows high

I see you stranded on the border line

Unwrap your blue guitar, play a tune so fine

Hold that rhythm, never let it die

Rock me  while the wind blows high

The wind blows high and the wind blows low again

There's a shaking in the ground like the world might end

Open up the sky and let me in

The wind blows high and the wind blows low again

The wind blows high and the wind blows low again...

World enough and time and I do believe

For love to grow and the heart grow to receive

World enough and time to turn around

We're not really lost, just waiting to be found

Whistle up the wind that calls your name

Howling like a prayer with no amen

High or low, you ride it just the same

It will never blow this way again

I see you gleaming in the morning light

Played your blue guitar all through the night

Stretched your heart and soul upon the strings

Shining with the tender love you bring

The wind blows high and the wind blows low again

There's a shaking in the ground like the world might end

Open up the sky and let me in

The wind blows high and the wind blows low again

The wind blows high and the wind blows low again...

            (Robert Hunter, 1995)

Miss you Jerry, thanks for everything.
