  1. i have the sugar hill cuts i like, but never felt compelled to get that full collection. no denying there were some classic jams before 88 as well.

Yeah! I agree. I think you can only get some of the West Street Mob (which is what I want) and some others on this set now. I think most of that stuff is out of print unless you buy a used copy from what I just saaw on Amazon.

  2. I've had a few encounters:

Happened into a Borders Books in Arlington,VA and met Terry Bradshaw there signing his book.

I met Faye Dunaway, Neil Patrick Harris (pre-gay and pre-Doogie Howser) and Richard Widmark while filming a movie close to my home town.

Almost ran over James "the Ragin' Cajun" Carville while he was jogging in Alexandria a few weeks ago.

Met Fred Savage at a bar back in my college days in Athens, GA. Other regular, random sightings in Athens were Micheal Stipe (would occasionally shop in his food co-op), most of the guys from Widespread Panic, Hines Ward and the guy from the B-52s.

The El Rey is a pretty intimate general admission (standing room only) venue. So it was the ideal setting. Swell Season played for over 2 hours. They performed practically the whole soundtrack as well as a handful of new songs and it sounded great. Glen was very talkative with the audience and shared quite a few stories. Highlights are slowly coming back to me:

*covers of Van Morrison "Into The Mystic" & a Pixies song that I know I've heard before. Something about "sitting on the concrete"? If any of you Pixie buffs know the song, a title would be much appreciated.

*Glen tells a story about how his niece loves his songs, but she always gets sad listening to them. So he wrote her a song about how everyone loves bananas. Very catchy and upbeat.

*Damien Rice apparently helped cowrite some songs, and during the encore he came onstage and performed a song by himself. No clue what the song was, but it was great. I'm definitely going to dig deeper into his song bank.

*BEST FREAKIN' PART OF THE SHOW! --> during Glen's solo performance of "Say It To Me Now" his guitar setup shuts down. He tries for about 10 seconds to fix it but realizes it's a lost cause. So he says "if everyone just stays real quite I'll finish the song." Holy crap it gave me goose bumps. The place is dead silent and he just belts out the last 1:30 of the song. The crowd erupts in applause and cheering for quite an extended amount of time. Goose Bumps.

I feel very fortunate to have seen this performance and will lodged in my mind for quite some time. His band 'the Frames' are coming to town in September and I'm contemplating catching that performance as well.

From the 9:30 Club setlist posted on NPR they played "Cactus" off of Surfer Rosa. I'm sure that's probably the Pixies song they played.

What a great show. The songs from the movie were great, but of special delight were a few of the Frames songs like Star, Star and The Pavement Song, as well as the covers of the Pixies, Van Morrison, and Bob Dylan.

Does anybody have the power (or inclination) to capture this? Or, do any of you have good recommendations for easy-to-use and preferably free software to get the job done? I would really like to have this on CD.

    Thanks,

Shoot! A pity I couldn't go. I guess I'll have to enjoy the npr download instead

  5. Done. Just got me a ticket. Price is right, too.

Yeah. I'm on the fence about going. I have a friend who went to the movie with me and wants to go, but she has a commitment in Adams Morgan and it's going to be a three-ringed logistics circus for me to get her and get to the show. :lol I guess I'll decide today.

  6. Ugh. Well, I'm glad you had a great time. Burlington, my adopted city, is indeed very pretty and has a wonderful vibe. And, you know, every once in a while Wilco plays. Not so bad! And Dylan played on that Sunday too. Wilco and Dylan in the same weekend? Yeahhhhhhh... I'm happy.

Oh man! So I missed Dylan AND Ryan Adams. Poo!

  7. Thanks so much. 12 hours?!?! Wow. My drive in was 12 minutes. Either way, though, it was worth it. Which is nice...

Yeah. It was pretty rough drive. I haven't gone on a roadtrip in awhile. Burlington is a very pretty city and was a welcome change of pace compared to the usual DC craziness! I was definitely hurting by the time I got into Baltimore. :)

  8. Last time I went to Merriweather from VA I took 295 BW Parkway. Exit onto Hwy. 32 drive a few miles then exit onto 29 North to the venue. Not sure how to navigate this out of the District, but it cut out the beltway and was a pretty quick drive (at least on that day it was). :thumbup
