  1. I probably need to put more thought into this, but off the top of my head:

    1. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

    2. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

    3. The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America

    4. Kanye West - Late Registration

    5. Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica

    As for songs:

    1. LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends

    2. The Hold Steady - Killer Parties

    3. Wilco - Poor Places

    4. Wolf Parade - I'll Believe in Anything

    5. Outkast - Hey Yah!

    6. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife 1, 2, & 3

    7. Nas - Can't Forget About You

    8. Bloc Party - This Modern Love

    9. Kanye West - Jesus Walks

    10. Calexico - All Systems Red

  2. For the record, Lupe's new album is spectacular (Maybe my favorite album of the year, and certainly my favorite hip hop album of the year), and it is basically one long diatribe against the "mainstream" of rap.

"Dumb It Down" is probably the most intelligent, self aware hip hope song I've ever heard.

Yeah, I've listened to it through twice since I bought it yesterday. I'm still trying to digest it. I don't know if I ever remember an artist releasing an album that is as different from the first as this. The lyrics and flow are breathtaking, and they fixed the breath control problems that existed in his first album.

This album is just so much darker and more atmospheric than Food and Liquor.

  3. I keep seeing all these year-end lists and to be honest my list is the only list that I have no complaints about. I really nailed my own list. From 1-10, I just have absolutely no complaints about it. It's like I know exactly what I love!!

Wow, I feel the same way!...about my list of course.

I do think it is a little ridiculous to quibble over list placement and to complain when albums that were only marginally well received by everyone but yourself is not included in an end of year top 50 list. I've heard countless people complain on numerous message boards that bands like Interpol aren't included in a list; I mean, I understand that you may disagree, but are you really surprised that it wasn't included?

But what bothers me is when publications like Paste or AV Club put out lists purporting to rank the "best music of 2007" that is nearly entirely filled with indie rock/pop (with a token MIA thrown in for good measure!). I understand that you can only create a list based off of the listening habits of your staff, but if that's the case, maybe the list should be more appropriately titled "Best Music for White Guys in Sweaters with Shaggy Hair and Unkempt Beards in 2007." And maybe some of these "music" publications should consider hiring more diverse staff writers.

  4. the Roots, Common and MF Doom (to name a few) are all head and shoulders above anything Kanye's ever done.

Kanye's my favorite going, but there are a lot of great hip hop artists not doing the '"shoot you up' and 'bang hos' type of stuff" as tibbles so eloquently put it.

Off the top of my head (besides those listed by Geoff):

    Nas

    Lupe Fiasco

    Pharoahe Monch

    Little Brother

    CunninLynguists

    Talib Kweli

    Rhymefest

    Pete Philly & Perquisite

    El-P

    Murs

    Aesop Rock

    and on and on....

  5. Yeah, that was my favorite part of the Nike mix too. In reality, All My Friends, Someone Great, and North American Scum are probably 3 of my 10 favorite songs of the year.

Edit: I think seeing them perform All My Friends live at Lolla enhanced my appreciation for the song.

  6. absolutely not Animal Collective.

You probably can't go wrong w/ LCD Soundsystem

It's tough with that broad of a description, I mean I would definitely recommend the Tough Alliance, but he might think it's too poppy. Maybe Simian Mobile Disco or Justice.

One of my favorite albums of the year is Gui Boratto's Chromophobia, but it's sort of ambient minimalist techno

  7. I see. I wonder why they just don't combine? Ego?

It's the whole Hydra concept. If they combine, it's easier to take them down.

What.cd actually offered to lend some server space to waffles.fm to help them while they're trying to solve their hosting issues, but waffles declined.

  8. A friend of mine says that waffles is better than what.

I'm in both, and I disagree.

Right now waffles has more torrents. I find some albums on waffles that I don't find on what, but I occasionally find torrents on what that I don't find on waffles.

I think what.cd is more attractive, the admins are more attentive to the needs of the users, and are quicker to update and enhance site features. And right now they have taken on the huge task of creating their own torrent community code to replace the problematic tbsource.

What.cd encountered some problems early on, but the site has been running seamlessly for weeks. They have already transitioned to new servers in Sweden, after finding out leaseweb was going to kick them off (waffles has yet to make the move), and the site is running smoothly. They seem to have the infrastructure in place to support the community, and the community has grown significantly in the last couple of weeks. Waffles won't open invites until they move to the new servers in Sweden, which causes their biggest problem:

    LACK OF LEECHERS.

It is FAR easier to build ratio on what.cd, as the invites have opened and the membership has grown. At waffles, it's a battle to build ratio. Right now they're trying to combat the lack of leeching by offering freeleech, but freeleech brought the site to its knees, and now they've disabled the search function in order to keep the site working.

Right now, what.cd is the far more stable of the two sites.

  9. I'm going to be the asshole that lists a lot more than anyone asked for or cares to see. Mostly because I started putting together a list and couldn't figure out where to stop.

  10. what.cd just switched over to their new servers in sweden after leaseweb was going to shut down their trackers. Waffles is having a more difficult time, and has warned their users to expect significant downtime.

Now that what.cd has made the seamless transition to the new servers, they've opened up a bunch of invites. If you're interested, pm me your email address.

  11. Bridwell is on the mark with his comments regarding concert-goers obsession w/ myspace and youtube. I remember after the infamous San Diego incident, he talked about how he doesn't understand why people can't just experience the concerts and remember them instead of being so concerned w/ filming it or taking pictures of it or blogging about it for myspace/youtube/blogosphere glory. It all seems very superficial to me.

It actually reminds me of the BoH Everything All the Time show at the Metro. There were a bunch of kids around me shooting pics and writing down the setlist for their blogs. Bridwell broke into their cover of David Allen Coe's "You Never Even Called Me By My Name," and all the kids were scrambling around trying to find out what the song was while I thrillingly sang along.
