  1. This should be pretty good. Lots of videos from this have been floating around online. It will be nice to have a high quality copy.

    Details at http://www.remdublin.com/

On October 26th, R.E.M. will release R.E.M. LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA, a two-CD set featuring 39 songs from the band's acclaimed 2007 working rehearsals in Dublin, Ireland.

"Live At The Olympia" ventures back to the first week in July 2007, when R.E.M. set up camp at the venerable Olympia Theatre in Ireland's capital city and tested new material over five nights before fired-up, capacity crowds comprised of fan club members, friends, family, and fans from all over the world who were party to R.E.M.'s so-called "experiment in terror." "We were just trying to do something we hadn't done before," said guitarist Peter Buck, "which meant there was no relaxing during the set. Every second we were playing something we didn't know all that well. Which was kind of good... there were all kinds of terror elements going on during that show."

The music on "Live At The Olympia" was produced by Dublin native Jacknife Lee who, along with R.E.M., co-produced the band's 14th studio album, ACCELERATE, which subsequently shot straight to number one in nine countries. Many of the eleven songs on ACCELERATE appeared in some form or fashion at the Dublin rehearsals, and R.E.M. LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA is an opportunity for fans to hear and experience those songs at one of the earliest stages in the developmental process.

In addition to the new material, the band also served up twenty-nine other songs, many of them rarely if ever played, culled mainly from the band's storied IRS years, ranging from the 1982 e.p. Chronic Town to 1983's Murmur up through 1988's Document.

A special edition 2 CD & DVD set will contain a film of the Dublin shows by Vincent Moon and Jeremiah, who previously worked with R.E.M. on Ninetynights, Six Days, and the video for Supernatural Superserious. For more on the forthcoming release, fans should be sure to visit remdublin.com where audio for "Driver 8" is currently streaming.

  2. I remember my mom saying "Did you hear that Nirvana died?". I was 14 at the time and a friend a mine had died a couple of months earlier. Not a great span of time for me, but before long, I decided that one of these deaths was sad and the other was sad, but mostly stupid.

It seemed like MTV had the Nirvana Unplugged on loop for the next week.

  4. I'm just happy that you guys know what a New Ziland accent sounds like, let alone that Wilco has recorded a large chunk of their new record here.

    Who would have thought?

I think I'll have some fush and chups to celebrate.

Between this, and the success of FOTC, I'm a little proud right now.

Bro, I just hope they rattle their dags and get the album released. Cheers.

  5. Hi Fi is good, but crazy long compared with most of the catalog.

To me, Wilco's IATTBYH is like a cousin to How the West Was Won... Both are great tunes.

E-bow is my favorite on the record. Binky the Doormat is probably my favorite song that references Astroglide.

I like Accelerate. It's funny to me that I seem to be enjoying the slower songs more. Until the Day is Done is a great example of how much better this album is than recent efforts. Can you imagine how this song would sound with the Around the Sun treatment, awash in keyboards?

  6. True. I get the feeling, however, that the last 2 records were really Stipe solo projects, and that the other guys, especially Buck, weren't very involved. Buck's had some recent interviews where he basically suggested as much.

So, with Peter Buck apparently back on board--he's always been my favorite R.E.M. guy anyway--I'm looking forward to the new record. It might not be another Reckoning or Fables, but it damn sure won't be another Around the Sun.

I think the last two were Mills/Stipe projects, Around the Sun especially.

I remember an interview several years ago where R.E.M. were talking about how they didn't want the band to become a hobby where they get together ever few years for an album. This seems to be exactly what happened after Bill left. The good thing is, all evidence seems to show that they've recognized this and want to communicate again. As far as I'm concerned, the thing for them to do now is to start earnestly working on the next album while they tour.

  7. I totally agree. The last time I saw REM was in St. Louis in '99. I wanted to open up a vein in order to get this show over. Micheal Stipe was so friggin rude to the audience that I couldn't believe it. "Shut up", "Show some respect and turn your cell phones off! I turned mine off!" and , "Listen to the song!" were all shouted at the audience during the show. I remember thinking, "what a DICK!" and turning to my buddy and saying "Brett...I think I am DONE with REM." Haven't looked back since.

Granted, I was really there to see Wilco open for these guys, but still...what's with the attitude?!?!?!?!?!?!

Sounds like a Jeff Tweedy solo show.
