  1. Was at Dublin and Cork and loved the gigs. A few thoughts:

-probably the best they’ve sounded, and that’s saying a lot.
-weirdly I wasn’t mad about Nels solo in Impossible Germany in Dublin. Loved what he did in Cork. Just shows he never does the same thing twice.
-poor Jeff and his hip, looks painful.
    - the fact they sold out 3 decent sized venues in Ireland says a lot. Hopefully they come back soon.

-we said hello to Eric (tour manager) outside the Cork venue. He looked away and said nothing to us. I’d say he thought we were going to ask for a favour like getting something signed.
-the heatwave meant very sweaty gigs, particularly in Cork. Ireland just doesn’t have the air con setup some U.S. venues probably have, but the band soldiered on.

  2. Weird they're listed as Sub Pop and not dBpm?

UPDATED > More info on Bandcamp - https://jefftweedy.bandcamp.com/album/cmon-america?from=fanpub_fnb

“C’mon America” is the A-side to Jeff Tweedy’s single, and is from an unreleased group of songs with mostly sci-fi lyrics. Meanwhile “UR-60 Unsent,” the B-side, is a pitiful tale of an unsent lovesick mixtape, taken from a separate batch of unreleased songs with mostly pitiful lyrics.

  3. Got 1 this morning in Tower Records Dublin.

Guy working there said they had about 8 or 10 and nobody else in Ireland did. He also said there was some sort of mess up so no UK stores got it? Is that true? Either way he said we were lucky.

Had a good few listens today and love it.Family Ghost is obviously great. Its different to Warm I think. Definitely in a similar vein but a little more low key maybe. Evergreen, Sick Server are two great ones that jump out.

Also there are some very raw lyrics about his past and parents. In particular Orphan, seema to be about how Jeff is an orphan now his parents are both passed away. Sick Server also seems (to me)to be about touring/travelling and calling from the road to check in on someone you're worried about.

Overall it's great and just in case the limited release made it seem to anyone as left over tracks or outtakes from the Warm sessions, it definitely is not.

Only pity is I cant listen away from the record player but in some ways being forced to only listen to an album that way is cool.

Also credits have Jeff playing everything, Spencer played all drums.

  4. First year of this festival and a scorcher of a day. Wilco got about 1hr 30mins, maybe a little more.

Jeff said some nice things about Porto, not tons of chat though. All seemed in good spirits, Jeffs really rockin the fuzzy Neil Young look with the long hair and hat. Things like Spiders arrangement were so great! Once again just always impressed with how tight the band are. Bit if a chatty crowd but seems to e a trademark of the festival. We foud the same down the front for Rufus Wainwright, Yo La Tengo and The Walkmen. Why push down the front to chat?

Jesus etc seemed to get added on at the end, Nels had to be told about it, Jeff said they weren't playing it lately because they've played it everywhere, loved it! I do think if they're to drop any song they always play then drop HMD or ITMWLY- think I've heard them at every Wilco show ever.

2nd time hearing it at a show but I Might sounds so great live.

Festival needs a lot of work itself, noise bleed between stages in pretty bad, toilets also bad and if you're vegetarian I hope you like cheese pizza or cold pasta.

  5.

I am "naturalized Irish", came here initially against my will (for love), but these days I've developed an ersatz Stockholm Syndrome and consider this my home. I have high expectations of the Irish Times. I really want them to be on par with the New York Times or Washington Post. Ms. Murphy may have been writing for a free supplement, but she is still on the Irish Times staff as a entertainment writer. It's not like she is some rookie reporter.

Yikes. I will brace myself... Thanks for the heads up!

To be honest, I think I am just still hurting from the short set Wilco will play at the festival, and wanted a scapegoat. It's not even that they will play fewer songs, but that there would be less time for banter, which is partly the fun of seeing them live.

I'll get over it. Imma bring my own party to FFF (leveraged friendships and made people buy tickets to come) and am looking forward to the weekend. Woohoo!

(Mr. Darlington, I am curious if you are associated with the FFF. You seem to get all of the first scoops before they are officially announced.)

Ha! I wish. I won't even get to FF and I live about 100mtrs from IMMA in Kilmainham.

I do work in Irish media though, in TV and film stuff, not newspapers or blogs.

Yeah I'm still seething from the 1hr set at electric picnic a few yrs ago- that sucked.

I will see them in Porto though!

  6. Badly written article in the Irish Times.

    http://www.irishtime...4316645587.html

She waits about 100 words before launching the "ashes of Uncle Tupelo" trope.

    I really liked this.

Are you Irish? If so I presume you know what the Ticket is and that it's aimed at the general public.

The article is also aimed at shifting tickets for the festival. This ain't an interview in Mojo or Uncut.

It's read by a certain sorta person who buys the Times and on a Friday they get this free supplement. It needs to cater to the masses and unfortunately the masses probably don't know who Jeff Tweedy is. So unless The Weekend magazine do an in depth piece, this is the best you'll get.

If you're looking for a bad article try the one in Hot Press this fortnight that's interviewing Jeff.

Now they are exclusively a music magazine, what's their excuse?

  7. a few years ago at Electric Picnic they just had an hour - so an hour and fifteen is an improvement! Plus I think the festival is getting choked by their 10.45 curfew which they didn't go over last year.

It should also be pointed out - since somebody mentioned getting from 1 stage to another - that this place is tiny so there's about 30secs to get from stage to stage.

  8. for Wilco or the festival in general?

For Wilco i'd say 9 or a little earlier, the curfew is 11 and last yr they kept to it.

Since it's a bank holiday there's no reason they wouldn't start early, just depends how many more bands they add. They might pad it out with some irish bands.

  9. No way?! Where does it say that? Boo. I was half hoping there would be another date added in the Republic of Ireland.

There's a post about it on this Irish Times blog, in the comments the organiser of the Belfast festival posts to say it's the only Irish date.

  10. Wilco will play the Open House Festival in Belfast in September. Others due in town for the festival from September 7 to 12 include Old Crow Medicine Show, The Felice Brothers, The Low Anthem, AA Bondy and Dr. Dog.

Limited early bird tickets for the Wilco and Felice Brothers show at the Festival Marquee (Custom House Square) on September 10 are now on sale at £25 each (normal price will be £32.50).

It's also been added on the site that this will be Wilco's only Irish date.

  12. Hi guys,

Here's a new music video we just made, it's for Irish band The Ambience Affair.

No video cameras were used in the production of this video. It was created entirely from over 15,000 still photographs on a Canon EOS 400D DSLR, shot on location in the Wicklow mountains, Ireland, February 2010.

  13. Was an awesome show !

Jeff was in great form, kept commenting after songs that each one related to an Irish artist, Impossible Germany to Thin Lizzy for example.

There was some incident with somebody at the front, I think security took their camera off them, not sure but Jeff seemed to be talking to them or something.

Overall it was great, I loved hearing Im Always In Love. Blitzen Trapper and Janet Weiss came out and played/sang along to California Stars. I think since it was a Friday night the curfew was 11.30 so we got a 2 and a half hr set.

Seeing them tonight and last Sunday at Green Man one song that really stands out is One Wing, it really works live. i love it on the album but live it just seems to take on another form.
