  1. Thanks for the input folks. It looks like accommodation is going to be the major stumbling block, but hopefully something will fall into place and I'll be able to make it. If anybody does hear of any accommodation options, or has booked a room with an extra bed and you want to fill it to bring the cost down, please let me know. I'm a friendly, fun, respectful Aussie guy who seriously doesn't want to miss out on this Wilco extravaganza.
  2. Hey guys, I'm currently in the US, visiting from Australia. I hadn't given much thought to going to Solid Sound as I was originally going to have left the country by now, but as it turns out I've extended my stay and after randomly bumping into Mikael in NYC on Friday night I'm now very keen to go. It looks like tickets are easy enough to come by, but I'm having a bit of trouble trying to organize transport, and accommodation looks like being an issue too. I'm in NYC at the moment but was planning to head to Boston for a couple of days before the weekend, so I've looked at Peter Pan buses bu
  3. Wow, what an astonishing show. That was my 9th Wilco show over 5 different tours and it would be number 1 or 2 on the list, maybe shaded just by the 03 show at the Palace in Melbourne. Just an amazing setlist and I was blown away to hear songs that I haven't seen them play before like Box Full Of Letters and also happy that they left out a few songs they generally play that I think are just middling like IATTBYH. Being a massive Big Star fan and still pretty sad about the passing of Alex Chilton I was really hoping they would roll out Thank You Friends after hearing that they'd played it in N.
  4. I thought he might be. He must be a pretty big fan because he programmed a Wilco mix tape on JJJ a year or two ago. They play all songs from one chosen artist for an hour straight. Not only is he a very funny and clever man, but he has great taste in music too.
  5. Yes, but what about mere mortal bands? How did they cope with working a seated crowd? And if it was the norm in those days, then bands would be more accustomed to dealing with it. Say what you will, but there was a palpable change in atmosphere when a lot of the crowd left their seats and came up to the stage. Several people have commented on it, but you claim we're wrong, yet you weren't even there! I know people who live in Melbourne, who didn't go to the shows here because of the choice of venue, and instead flew up to Sydney for the show. I was at all 3 of those shows and I can tell you th
  6. Musically conscientious??? Turn it up! I'd been trying to work out what the hell Nels was thinking at 4:18-4:20 in Impossible Germany, and I came to the conclusion that he must have thought, hmm this song is sounding really good.....think I'll just play some atonal garbage for a few seconds and nobody will notice. In fact some pompous twits might even lap it up, interpreting it as some moment of musical inspiration that the unsophisticated simpletons won't be able to comprehend. Now I know he was just being "musically conscientous". What makes you think all cock-rock guitarists are/were any
  7. I've only seen 2 shows there before (Belle & Sebastian, The Three Bens) and last night I was in a far "better" seat than I was at either of those gigs, but there was just something lacking for large parts of the show. It was good, sometimes fantastic, but the other times I've seen Wilco (4 before last night) the magic lasted for pretty much the whole show. Last night there were moments of pure magic, when I just had a stupid big grin on my dial, but it wasn't sustained like the previous times I've seen them. I'm sure the seated arrangement had a lot to do with the atmosphere, as things d
  8. I've been playing guitar for 20 years and unfortunately spent some of that time playing in cock-rock and metal bands. I know guitar masturbation when I hear it, and Nels is guilty of it at times. As I said earlier, he plays some beautiful parts but he also crosses the line into manic guitar masturbation on occasion.
  9. He does when he plays what the song needs, but some of his shredding is just embarrassing. Wilco have always been a band that is about the songs first and foremost, and I really feel that some of Nels' playing detracts from what's going on underneath.
  10. Just got home from the show (and some post gig bevvies) and overall it wasn't the most inspiring Wilco show I've seen. There were moments of complete brilliance but several factors seemed to undermine the performance: 1: The venue - The all seated format definitely didn't work tonight, and for the most part there was a noticeable lack of atmosphere. For the second encore a lot of people left their seats and came up the centre aisles towards the stage, and the atmosphere improved markedly. Jeff even kept apologising for the apparent lack of excitement in the audience. When everyone came up th
  11. Cheers for that After I posted my question I did a search on a Mac software site and downloaded a program called Transmission. It's doing its thing at the moment. What I'm unsure of now is what format the sound files end up being? It's all a bit confusing for someone like me who grew up with the Commodore 64 representing state of the art technology
  12. Ok, I'm a total newcomer to torrents, so terms like snatch, seed etc mean nothing to me. I've downloaded the Converted Music.torrent file. Now what do I do with it? I'm assuming I need some sort of program to complete the download? I'm running an Intel Mac. Help Please?
  13. Sorry, there were too many options there and I only ever listen to ABC for the cricket, so wasn't 100% sure which one it was. Hopefully they'll have the whole interview up in the near future.
  14. Interview has been going for a while, but they're playing What Light now and then coming back to Jeff. Here's a link to listen online: http://www.abc.net.au/radio/listenlive.htm Click on Radio National (I think)
