    A Cherry Ghost
  1. Part of his issue with stage presence, especially after Jay left, was that he was stuck behind the keyboards when he played guitar. It was like he was inside a little box. Pat leaves that area when he plays guitar, but Leroy was kind of stuck, just playing whatever instrument needed to be played at the time. I always felt bad for him for that reason. It was like if he jammed too hard he'd probably break something or mess up his other gear.
  2. John Doe opened for them in Des Moines in March, 2008. Great opening act. Played some stuff by X, grabbed the room with "A Little More Time." Brought Nels out for the finale which was a "Gimme Shelter." My first thought was that it was silly to close with a Stones cover but it totally blew the roof off the joint and got the crowd properly lubed up for the main act (who didn't disappoint either).
  3. I've never thought of this song as advocating flag burning. Rather, as was mentioned earlier, I always thought of the proper way to dispose of a no-longer serviceable American flag, which is by burning. I think he's saluting what those ashes once stood for, amid all of the triviality and not caring that goes on today. The line that always strikes me is, "You know I would die if I could come back new," which leads me to believe that this isn't just about our country but ourselves, questioning what we've become since we didn't become our ideal. So he salutes the old flag and the old leaves
  4. I'm getting nothing ... I click on extras on the DVD and get a page that says click her for bonus material; I click that and get the a page that gives me options to buy the DVD or watch the trailer. ... What am I missing? Help!
  5. Southern Minnesota guy here. I saw them in Duluth last September and in Des Moines in March. Both were magical shows for different reasons. Missed Rochester though for myriad reasons. What was the setlist? Maybe I don't want to know. I'll probably be filled with regret. Great pics, though.
  6. I watched IATTBYH with the band's/director's commentary audio track on, and the Jeff and the other guys left the room during the infamous studio/mixing argument and basically had no comment on that. So that truly must have been the climax in that confrontation. Also, I watched the documentary on the making of Mermaid Ave., and it looked like Jeff and Billy Bragg clashed at times, too. That left me with two impressions: 1. Combined with the clashing with Jay on IATTBYH, I figured Jeff as artist might be a little difficult to work with at times. Hey, it happens and I don't think less of him b
  7. Duluth. Outside. Fog. Mist. Wind. Cold. ... A giant ore boat left dock during "Jesus Etc." and slowly drifted by in the canal during the song. The ship was just at the lift bridge and on the way out to Lake Superior when the song ended and blew its fog horn. It was a magical moment.
