the song blows, as far as i'm concerned
plodding, pointless, bloated, self-absorbed
"a song that thought too much of itself right out of the box" is a terrific way to put it!

the all-timer for me was Yes at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City on a Thursday night ... got home at like 5 a.m. ... went to school ... left school and went straight to the train station and into NYC for the Schaefer Music Festival Starcastle / Gentle Giant gig that started at 5 o'clock in Central Park
did three shows in three nights last spring ... and all three shows were in different states

Tommy Keene - Places That Are Gone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCj0nw24UaQ
Conan looks so young in this clip. Can you spot the Wilco connection? (I knew you could)
Tommy has about a thousand other perfect pop songs, too ... & he's still putting out great music
he's gotta be one of the most underrated songwriters/guitarists/singers in pop music history
-
I saw him in St. Louis with Brian Henneman.
He was OK, didn't strike me as anything special.

love the pix
demos & mitch especially
man, those guys just bring it, don't they?
and kevin -- i never dreamed he'd be such a powerhouse after not playing for so long
his fills in smothered in hugs were mighty
i fucking love this band

Great show in Philly last night. Wish I'd gone to more than one show on the tour.
was indeed mind-blowing
i thought on a different level than the 9:30 club show a couple weeks ago
one of the best rock shows i've ever seen
this band is a fucking powerhouse and they just blast out hit after fucking hit
closer you are. motor away. echoes myron. game of pricks. unleashed: large-hearted boy. my impression now. exit flagger. shocker in gloomtown. i am a scientist. tractor rape chain. smothered in hugs.
one after another
they just keep coming at you like a fucking bulldozer
i still prefer gillard-era GBV for the sheer variety of stuff you got at the live shows, but this was just two hours of rock 'n' roll sledgehammer
loved it

i have a feeling that Pollard may not have the range to sing OIRS anymore.
so I guess I shouldn't request Cheyenne?

The Atlanta show was amazing. As I said before, I would've liked a couple more tunes from Under the Bushes...and I thought there'd be more since they opened with Cut Out Witch, but it wasn't to be.
couldn't agree more
if i remember in washington, they did cut-out witch, bright paper werewolves and don't stop now? and that's it? from under the bushes?
how cool would have underwater explosions been. or official ironmen rally song, man called aerodynamics, lord of overstock, rhine jive click -- damn, any of 'em
something off the beaten track would have been great but no complaints, it was a really good show
hey, am i delusional or did cut-out witch not have the guitar intro?

was at the D.C. show last night
they sounded great. was a hell of a lot of fun. loved every minute of it
that said ... on the way home i was thinking that as much as I love that lineup & those records, I think I prefer late-period GBV when it comes to live shows for two reasons -- first, those shows were always so unpredictable. you would get 10 songs in a row from 10 different bands or lineups -- Storm Vibrations, then Subspace Biogrpahies, Time Machines, Liar's Tale, Little Lines, Stifled Man Casino, Run Son Run, Pricks, Chasing Heather Crazy. I loved that about late-period GBV. The versatility was staggering. And then Gillard's musicianship really took GBV to another level there the last several years. They were such a musical band.
And I also think last night was slightly too much of a nostalgia act for me. I just love hearing new stuff by any band I see mixed in with the old stuff. An evening of entirely old stuff was a little depressing. As much as I think Bob's recent stuff is very uneven, the Boston Spaceships shows were fantastic because the material was so new and vibrant. Found myself listening to 0 to 99 on the way home and totally digging it.
I would have liked to have seen a few tracks that were from that era but not so right down the middle. I mean, I LOVE every one of the songs they did. But something off the beaten path would have been cool, either from Vampire (although Tobin did do Gleemer, which was amazing) or one of the early records ... imagine this bunch of guys doing Captain's Dead? or Navigating Flood Regions? Mammoth Cave?
But it was a great show & great to see those guys on stage together after so long.
And Sweet Apple ROCKED

We recorded 4 songs this summer at our friend Brian McTear's studio in Philadelphia

Matt Pond PA
Mazarin
Trouble with Sweeney

His audience has shrunk to a size that even a limited # of 500 takes a while to sell out. Imagine if Wilco did that.
order quick -- there's only 466 left

Cubehouse is good. I've listened to it about 3-4 times now...I don't think it's as good as Planets or Zero to 99, but I have to give it time there are a few cool tracks: "Airwaves" is very T-Rex-ish; "Fly Away" has a great GBV sound; "Come on Baby Grace" is a great little rocker.
Overall, it's good and better than his solo output by a mile in my book.
i haven't heard cubehouse yet. need to pick it up, but really haven't heard anything overwhelmingly positive about it, other than from the kool-aid drinkers on DTS who say everything is great because they think it will make bob their friend
zero to 99 is great. planets is pretty good.
the solo stuff? the last three (elephant jokes, we all got out of the army and moses on a snail) are just brutal.
the last great solo record was FaCE - although i dig a lot of normal happiness - and the last even decent one was crawling distance.
IMHO

great stuff
so glad i saw these guys this summer, even if it was an abbreviated set (sans split enz material)!

Studio Dead is largely ignored, but "Shakedown Street" is a really good single.
dig

great great stuff

And Ivan Julian, too.
Although wasn't Julian in some bubblegum pop band before the punk era began?
he claims on his web site to be a former member of the Foundations (build me up buttercup), although wikipedia does not list him as ever being a member

I KNOW! not only one of his best, but for me one of the best F-ing songs in the entire F-ing world.
couldn't agree more
looking for a way out is one of my 10 favorite non-GBV tracks ever
He's also done some killer covers - Mystifies Me, Looking at the World Through a Windshield, Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way? (frequent closer on Son Volt's last tour), Going, Going Gone, Effigy, and Lucifer Sam immediately come to mind.the one time i saw Uncle Tupelo they closed with Effigy
just absolutely freaking mind-blowing
