I think at least one Brit (shoutout to longtime reader Ghost Of Bob Cumming, who introduced himself after the show)

Sorry about the delay in catching up, went straight from Edinburgh on Sunday morning onto another engagement entirely, in rural Lincolnshire, and only just catching up now.

I think the Scottish term for someone English is 'Sassenach' (although that may be more of a Glasgow thing?) Despite the efforts of part of the population north of the border, we're all - Scottish and English - 'Brits'. For now, anyway.

It was nice to briefly meet you (and Queenie). What I really wanted to say is that I started reading contributor's little gig reviews of early Wilco shows back in the days of the old Uncle Tupelo Postcard mailing list. I thought it was amazing to read a review of a show in Iowa or Ohio within a few hours of it happening. To keep tabs on a tour as it wound it's way along, thousands of miles away, is the pinnacle of the internet as far as I'm concerned, but then I've always been a music nerd and am getting old.

The show was great. I got to see them play Misunderstood for the first time since Wolverhampton in 1997, so that made my night.

  2. Nick Offerman has some sort of copy of this new album as his interview with Stuart Maconie for BBC 6music's Radcliffe & Maconie radio show - for their 'First, Last and Everything' feature - has just gone out in the UK, and he wanted to choose a track from it as his 'Last' (latest) choice.

Stuart explained that they were unable to play it though 'because it's so new, it's not out', so we got a Cruel Country track instead.

  3.

    - The packaging seems kind of slight.

I was going to ask about this. Pink vinyl version, bought in the UK, just comes with lyric sheet and clear inner sleeve. Is that the same for everyone? Not even going to mention lack of download codes (Oops!).

No sign of the black & red/pink packaging shown in the GIF on band's Twitter feed.

Outer sleeve is clearly designed for more inner packaging, so guessing it's maybe the same outer sleeve for a deluxe version that has more inside? Although can forsee album spine crumpling if filed on shelf full of vinyl.

Minor grumble really though, enjoying the record a lot :)
  4. Be interested to see how that compared to other shows on this tour for you, Paul (I'm only a very occasional poster here, but feel I can call you by your first name after Jeff's prolonged references to you)?

That was the 5th time I've seen them, first in 1995, last 2010 (not sure why there's been such a long gap to last night) - and they blew me away. Best gig I've been to in a long time. They seemed to feed off an enthusiastic and packed audience (that had a much wider age range/gender split than was evident at Jeff's show at the Albert Hall 18 months ago). New songs all sounded great, loved the percussion on them.

The early start and finish even had me briefly imagining being back in my bed at a reasonable hour, until multiple motorway closures/diversions, put paid to that - 7+ hour round trip from Durham to Manchester, and back. Crazy.

  5. Been so long since I posted on here it's just taken me about half an hour to conjure my password from my memory, but had to come on to say what a show! Loved it.

Haven't seen Jeff in any form since 2010 (geography issue, was a 5 hour round trip for yesterday), but the wait was worthwhile.

Pecan Pie was brilliant. I'm a big fan of those early 'simple' WIlco songs. And then to be followed by Impossible Germany (which Jeff admitted just popped into his head) was a great surprise.

Some of the banter was similar to what's been reported for last couple of shows - the bit about everyone leaving after they'd heard their favourite, etc - but there's was loads more. Jeff admitted he'd missed his usual daily nap, due to a noisy crisp eater (with a really big bag of crisps, lasted the whole journey), on the train they took from Scotland to get to Manchester. My favourite was his first comment of the night, to the chap who bizarrely started clapping on every beat of IATTBYH - Jeff seemed to assume he was trying to assist him, as some sort of human metronome, so shot him an it's OK "I got it". Left me laughing anyway.

Don't know who else made it upstairs, but thank God that door Nazi finally relented and let us up there (he tried to fill the ground floor before removing his little velvet rope to access the mezzanine, I went and asked him about it and he said they'd sold 650 tickets and the lower level could hold 400. And that was his explanation for keeping it closed?!). Beautiful view.

  6. The funny thing is, they have met before, Jeff came into the studio on the Sky Blue Sky tour (I know, I recorded the version of John Wesley Harding he played).

I have completely missed this, but have just had Dermot on in the car on the way back from the in-laws. Don't enjoy listening to him particularly as he's utterly bland to my ears, seems to like nothing more taxing than landfill 'indie' musically (even better if it's a cover version - he played 'Chim Chim Cheroo' by Turin Brakes on the journey home and I, correctly, predicted he'd love that). I really struggle to see what Dermot's appeal is at all.

Sure I've heard him say before that his producer got him into Wilco, so presumably that's where the interest actually lies.

  7. Beaten to the punch while I fiddled around with my mobile!

    Set list was;

    Wilco (The Song)

    Shot In The Arm

    Bull Black Nova

    IATTBYH

    One Wing

    You Are My Face

    Impossible Germany

    Shouldn't Be Ashamed*

    Handshake Drugs

    Nothingseveregonna...

    Via Chicago

    I'll Fight

    Theologians

    I'm Always In Love

    Jesus Etc

    Walken

I'm The Man Who Loves You

    Hummingbird

    (Encore)

    The Late Greats

    You Never Know

    Hate It Here

    Heavy Metal Drummer

    Monday

    Outtasite

Thought it was a great show. Jeff's voice sounded good. Monday/Outtasite rocked like a bastard.

*This may have been my request. Except I meant Should've Been In Love, always get the titles mixed up!

  8. Somebody else will have to help with the setlist (though I can remember we began with Wilco (the Song)/Shot In The Arm/Bull Black Nova, and that Encore 1 was Poor Places>Spiders), but what a cracking show! My first Wilco show in 12 years so wasn't expecting the almost full Academy that I walked into, pretty vocal lot too, good atmosphere.

Jeff wasn't happy with someone video-ing early on, but he came round after that - they all seemed pretty pleased by the end.

  9. Wilco (The Album) - first week, number 49 in the UK album chart, second week, no trace in the top 100.

Hmm, that is poor! Although I should say it's taken Amazon UK a couple of weeks to get hold of the vinyl version, so a few sales not included there I would imagine. Mine finally turned up this morning. Looks fantastic.

  10. I doubt it. Think they would have been announced by now if there were to be anymore.

Bit concerned about when/if we might next see them in the UK after Jeff's comments in the latest issue of Uncut - a gig somewhere in the north would be much appreciated!

    Oh well :hmm

  11. Amen to all that!

Gradually Learning is the finest British country song of all time, to my mind.

It was my brother who bought the S/T album when it came out and when I went back home this Christmas I asked him if he could remember why on earth he bought it (not his sort of thing at all, you see). Sadly, he couldn't. Anyway, I pinched it and love it - it's currently on my iPod (as is one of Alan Tyler's solo albums). Saw them in the acoustic tent at Glastonbury one year too (either 93/94/95), they were great, but only a handful of people watching.

Think they played a one-off re-union show before Christmas??

  12. Nice little report. Thanks.

Seriously thinking about going to the Newcastle show on Friday, though have to admit that not only am I limited to 1/2 Autumn Defense tracks from the CDs that come with Word magazine, but also that I'm not completely bowled over by those tracks.

Shame about Wilco not coming back until next year now :upset - I don't really mind waiting as long as we get some sort of attempt to actually cover a fair bit of the country (rather than 2 London gigs + a festival or two) to make up for the farce of last November.

  13. with the festival issue, when they first played down here in 2003, it was pretty much a festival tour, but they threw in 2 full shows as well (and the US to Australia is a lot longer than a trip to Ireland!). you'd think they could have done that in Ireland too..

Or possibly even in the UK? :omg

  14. That's odd. Must have something to do with the international date line or GMT or something like that.

Even odder, I'm pretty certain that my copy of BT was a US import purchased prior to the UK release date. Not that it changes the ranking, but I like to think of it as adding a little local flavour.

  15. I meant to mention this months ago but forgot, but seeing as how this thread is back from the dead can I just point out that you're all looking at this entirely from a US perspective?

We Europeans would rank the albums thus

    AM

    BT

    ST

    YHF

    AGIB

    SBS

Pleased I could clear that up

  16. Is anyone ITK enough to know if there are likely to be UK dates after that Irish gig that's been announced, or am I just waiting in vain?

I'd kind of assumed that in an effort to make up for those cancelled shows last November plus the confirmation that they are coming across the Atlantic that something would have been rumoured/announced by now (after all, I think the November shows became common knowledge by the start of August - though it took a few more weeks for them to appear on Wilcoworld).

The real problem is that even if some shows are announced I'm going to struggle to make anything in the first half of September :realmad
