  1. I really gave this album a good deal of attention when it first came out. I pretty much tried to force myself to like it. I gave it at least 15 listens straight through. The problem is no songs really grab me or make any sort of emotional connection with me. When I like a song I can listen to the same song like 20 times in a row. W(TA) has no songs that I want to hit repeat and listen to again.

  2. Saying Wilco is on the decline is typical hyper-criticism of musical art. Wilco has 7 albums and probably 5 albums worth of B-sides, singles, Woody Guthrie material, etc. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost Is Born are two of the best rock albums of the past 20 years, no question. Sky Blue Sky and the Album are excellent rock records, though they may not be as groundbreaking creatively. But so what? I offer a comparison.

Neil Young has something like 30 albums. Probably 20 of them I wouldn't listen to for 15 minutes. Much of his music is atrocious. But on the other hand he is one of the great folk songwriters and performers of the 20th century. He is an artist, a whole artist. He's written amazing songs and terrible ones and hundreds in the middle. So give Wilco a little wiggle room. Just because you don't love every alum doesn't mean the band is on the decline. They'll keep creating and playing amazing shows. Take a second look when you criticize Tweedy's later songwriting. I'm thinking of You Are My Face, Please Be Patient With Me, Country Disappeared, Solitaire; these songs would stand out YHF, Ghost, or any of the previous albums.

I started this topic and I have to say that is an excellent point.

  3. I was worried that their decline was in full steam because of SBS but I happen to love their new album. It is kind of a hard thing to realize that your favorite band for years is not your favorite anymore... But that's part of life. And that's ok.

I do agree with your comments about their live shows. I haven't been to one in a while. Ever since Nels came on board I feel like their setlist rarely varies and that I'm watching a franchise and not the band I loved years ago.

Let's face it, unless Wilco is the exception to the rule, but most bands or even scientists like Einstein have that magical 7-10 year zone of brilliance. My only hope is that if they ever feel that what they are doing is not exciting, they should step away. But then again, I'm not one to ask someone to put down a multi-million dollar franchise either.

You are right. I've become so accustomed to saying and feeling that Wilco is my favorite band. I've gotta let it go. Being There, Summerteeth, YHF and a Ghost is born are some of my favorite albums of all time and leave it at that.

  4. It had been hard for me to come to terms with the fact that Wilco is simply a band on the creattive decline.

Sky Blue Sky and (The Album) are indicative of the creative demise that we've all witnessed in many other bands in the past.

ie. The Replacements, The Grateful Dead, the Stones, and My Morning Jacket just to name a few.

While they still play great live, I find myself less pysched to see them live since the setlists are dominated by the newest lame material.

Is anybody else depressed by Wilco(The Decline) ?

Is a bounce back possible? I am doubtful unless Tweedy starts smoking weed again.

  5. I've listened extensively to both Wilco (The Album) and Son Volt's new one American Central Dust.

Both have their share of Klunkers, but American Central Dust has a bunch of solid tunes.

(The Album) has some good moments too, but has fallen way to the bottom of my CD stack. Farrar's new effort remains in the player.

Obviously I vote for American Central Dust.

    What about you?

  6. I agree that some of the songs on Cardinology are week, but I really like like some of them. Back to my original point though is the best songs on these last 2 Ryan Adam's albums are better than the best songs on Tweedy's last 2 albums. The litmus test for me is which one's sound better when I've put my mind in chill and listen to tunes mode if you know what I'm saying. The RA albums are better in that frame of mind.

I know this is a little off topic here, but it is becoming more evident with each of Wilco's releases since Jay Bennett was booted that the band was better with him in it. Bennett on his own sucked, but the influence he had on Being There, Summerteeth, and YHF and even the Mermaid albums cannot be denied. I love Tweedy but he seems to be floundering to me in these week 70's soulish popish style.
