  1. Yeah, this Hill Auditorium crowd is by far the drowsiest I have ever seen.  I had a bad feeling when barely anyone was sang "hello" or "I am trying to break your heart."  Hell, even Jesus, Etc. didn't feel the same.  Pretty disappointed in my home state today.

It also doesn't help that this tour's tickets presale went live on the Monday immediately following Solid Sound Festival when people were traveling home.

Disclaimer, I have never had a chance to see Bon Iver, but I found a good time to finally go.  And boy, I did myself good bringing my earplugs, but the amplifiers that had no reason to be there still shook and rattled my entire body all night.  The performance astonished me.

I think most Bon Iver fans would at least hold a sacred spot for the song that catapulted him to mainstream fame (Holocene) and a tender heartbreak rumination (re: stacks) and the song spread by word of mouth through everything (Skinny Love); I personally consider myself a modest casual that admires.  However, I find it frustrating that when I'm standing in the first 10 rows of the concert, quite an audible majority of this crowd is talking, through Holocene, and re:stacks, and the first four measures of Skinny Love.  I've seen The National, Father John Misty, Wilco, and Sturgill Simpson (the rowdiest and drunkest by far), but maybe I'm getting old, or I just live in a city that sucks.  How do you consciously buy tickets to a soul/folk/rock act, and talk through one of the quietest and tenderest songs in the act?  How do you get up in the morning after talking to your friend loudly about your other friend's wedding through re:stacks?

Even as an admirer, I felt they heavily stacked the second set with barn burners, and the crowd just chatted through it.  I hope Bon Iver makes a Metal Machine Music.

  3. I haven't posted in a while, but I'm finally going to one of these after a lack of conflicts.  My name is Leon.  Hope to meet some VCers.  Please say hi, because in real life, I'm too fracking shy.

  4. Finally saw a non-festival hometown show (out of towner here). I don't think I'll ever shake off the miserable feeling of hearing people talk during opening act, especially in the front, then pretend and chat with the front band between songs as if they cared.

I did appreciate the Chicago enthusiasm and the heavy leaning toward Being There, especially with Sunken Treasure and The Lonely 1. They kind of blazed through the encore.

My sister and I had a pretty good time. She even got her first setlist, then one of the people next to her started to pester her to sell the setlist starting from $20 to $100 and would not relent as if to also insult her as not a fan. This was really uncomfortable for both of us. Still not sure how we feel since we had a hard time shaking this off after saying no, multiple times.

Other than that, I really enjoyed front row seats that allowed us to see the cleaniness of Nels's fingernails while he played Impossible Germany.

  5. I finally heard the whole album yesterday. Overall, the vocals reminded me of The Strokes, but the music did not remind me of the Strokes. I liked it, but will have to listen to it more. Initially, nothing stood out to me as being as strong as Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales.

I think I must have a sick sense of humor, because I found part of The Ballad of the Costa Concordia hilariously funny,

The album should incite laughter with its sober yet morbid take on maturity (or lack thereof).  I think you lose a significant amount of the punch of the album if you don't hear the humor.

I suspect you should listen to it now, because a few months from now it might not be interesting anymore.  Things change so fast and these guys buzz may be gone.

Could you backhand slap us a bit harder, please?  If not, provide fruitful or blunt points as you've mentioned such as "I hate their band name", "I don't like nasally singing voice", or "why would you combine sincerity and absurdist projection, that's stupid."  Otherwise, here's some directions to go home.

  6. Great show...was nice having to only drive an hour and a half. My daughter and I got to see our fourth show together, it's a very cool thing to share Wilco with your kid. I have seen Wilco probably ten times and never at a venue with out alcohol... I think it added to a more subdued and respectful audience though for whatever reason I always end up with talkers behind me. They didn't affect the Wilco portion but ruined the opener for us. A great show!

People were definitely chatting in the front rows during William Tyler, and pretty loudly.  That really disappointed me, but the Hill's sound wasn't super this time around unlike 3 years ago and 11 years ago.  But, most of the chatter died down once Wilco took stage.

  7. Sure, I'll take the bait for $2000, Alex.  I need to earn my pretentious hipster cred, so I will see them Friday even though I have been seeing them live about close to once a year, which comes nowhere near Bböp's attendance record.  But, whatever.

  9. Is that like when Americans say "I could care less" when they mean "I couldn't care less"?

    Top setlist so far

No, I mean what I say.  It could be worse is a fallacy that really gets on my nerves.  Yes, your predicament is less dire than other blights, but that doesn't mean you're not entitled to your gripes nor does it mean you should settle.

And yes, great setlist so far.  How many more Summerteeth songs tonight?  0 or 1?

  10. Saw the show last night in Boston and it was fantastic; I really love this band.

As with most of this tour they opened with a quieter/acoustic set (including a tasty cover of Balancing Act by 1980s Boston band Volcano Suns) and a great version of Ohm.  Then they took a break, came back, and plugged in the guitars for a loud second set.  That set also included a version of Ohm and ended with a 15+ minute guitar freakout of Pass the Hatchet I Think I’m Goodkind.  The encore included a Velvets cover (I Heard Her Call My Name) and an Only Ones song (The Whole of the Law).

My only disappointment was the version of one of my favorite songs on the new album (Before We Run) wasn't as great as I wanted it to be - but I realized that's in large part to he fact that the studio version includes horns and strings - so it just felt like something was missing.

If you are on the fence about seeing these guys because of unpredictability, don't worry.  There's no Condo Fucks, no Seinfeld reading, no Sounds of Science.  It's just Yo La Tengo doing what they do best.

I can understand people disliking Sounds Of Science and Seinfeld, but what's wrong with the Condo Fucks?  They [Yo La Tengo] do noisy punk/garage/rock originals and covers all the time.  From A Motel 6, Drug Test, and Little Honda remain very popular and favored.  By concept and philosophy, those songs and The Condo Fucks share a lot of room together.  Are there people that actually hate From A Motel 6, Watch Out For Me Ronnie, Sugarcube, Little Honda, Cherry Chapstick,...  Or do they just hate covers?  Or do they hate both?  I cannot imagine a Venn Diagram where a Yo La Tengo fan dislikes Condo Fucks.

  11. What's the timeframe for releases for a given year's grammys? Black Keys won several for El Camino, but that was released in 2011...

    Oh, and Katy Perry's boobs.

Her boobs are ugly: get that woman off screen.  So is her face: get her face off screen.  So is her voice: get that trash out of my ears.

Also, see this, and this, and this.

Now to balance it out... congratulations to Beyonce, Kanye, Jay-Z, Miguel, Usher (never thought I'd congratulate him, but, damn, Climax, damn, and also, Diplo), and Frank Ocean.

Also, who would want to vote for Babel for album of the year?
