  1. I Thought I Held You has a certain amount of charm to it. Or maybe it's just the nostalgia.

    I agree.

I'm guessing Tweedy doesn't like the lyrics...?

I LOVE the music. It's twangy but comfortable. Slide guitar is incredible...probably, for me, what makes me want to listen to it a few times whenever I put on A.M.

  2. The overt Beach Boys and Beatles references, the all-timer lyrics to VC and She's A Jar, the songs that sound like they could have been outtakes from some never-before-heard 60s band (When You Wake Up, ELT)...seeing them live on that '99 tour with Jay was a part of it, too.

....if they added a show or two to a rerelease of S/T, like the 8/31/99 FL concert that exists in great SBD quality, I'm sure people would buy it.

    Nice post.

Just got thinking, too, that Sam Jones film has 2 really fantastic recordings of Pieholden Suite & How Do You Fight Loneliness.

Such a wealth of awesomeness from that time period.

  3. Wonder why there's not to be a Deluxe version of Summerteeth? There must be tons of alternate versions of songs, along with who knows how many other recordings. It'd also be great to hear some live concert recordings during this time.

Wilco's been consistently very good for a LONG time, if not great, but for me, this album was Wilco at it its most magical.

  4. Jesus, man. Why would you yell that? Read the room. I love Jeff's response. "If they had any decency they would have chosen anyone else". He hit the nail on the head. I'm glad to see him standup to this degenerate.

I agree. DUMB to yell that at a Tweedy show.

But to be fair, Tweedy asked people to shout out an "affirmation". Of COURSE there's gonna be at least person shout something you don't want to hear. Not a smart move on Jeff perhaps.

I personally think no matter who Trump chose for the 5th Supreme Court seat, people like Tweedy wouldn't have liked it. Would Jeff have been on board with Amy Coney Barrett, another socially Conservative Catholic?

Anyhoo...this isn't the Political forum, so about Tweedy's music.

I've listened to audio from some of his solo shows. Really liking his new stuff. I think "Warm" is gonna be a winner. I particularly like "Having Been Is No Way To Be"! Sounds like he's singing to his fans.

  5. Stumbled onto an interesting hour-long Podcast by Malcolm Gladwell (former New Yorker writer) at his site, Revisionist History.

The full hour is devoted to making a case that Elvis suffered with Parapraxis (a Freudian slip, to put it simply) when singing the monologue portion of "Are You Lonesome Tonight".

The episode is mostly touching and sad, but has some feel-good moments (Elvis had a great, infectious laugh).

Jack White is interviewed half-way through, and takes his own stab at the Elvis tune, which is pretty great.

  6. Sometimes I think about what it would be like if they recorded Sky Blue Sky and Wilco (the album) at the same time in the loft-

It would be something like this:

    Either Way

    You Are My Face

    Impossible Germany

    Sky Blue Sky

    Side With the Seeds

    You And I

    One Wing

    Deeper Down

    Hate It Here

    Bull Black Nova

    Solitaire

Yeah, that would be a great record top to bottom.

I'd figure out a way to add One True Vine and On & On & On somehow, but generally a good idea.

  7. Ok, here it goes...

    1. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart

    2. Kamera

    3. Radio Cure

    4. War on War

    5. Jesus Etc

    6. Ashes of American Flags

    7. Heavy Metal Drummer

    8. I’m the Man Who Loves You

    9. Pot Kettle Black

    10. Poor Places

    11. Reservations

Not bad, if the topic was albums created by Wilco. For me, Summerteeth & Being There's track list is better.

  8. (Any song written or co-written by a Wilco member can be included)

    1. Airline To Heaven

    2. Magazine Called Sunset

    3. She's A Jar

    4. All The Same To Me

    5. Lullaby For Rafters & Beams

    6. Hotel Arizona

    7. At Least That's What You Said

    8. Far Far Away

    9. Pieholden Suite

    10. Can't Stand It

    11. More Like The Moon

    12. Shot In The Arm

    13. Dash 7

    14. Another Man's Done Gone

    15. Dreamer In My Dreams

  9. Wishful Thinking

    ALTWYS

    Hell Is Chrome

    Standing O

    Spiders

    Pieholden Suite

Neat list. Agree with much of it. Standing O doesn't seem appreciated enough.

I'm tempted to say Hotel Arizona because the vibe of the song is cool as hell. Or Dash 7 because....because....I don't know because, I just damn like it. Or ALTWYS because that studio version is SO incredible with Jeff's urgent, slippery-sounding electric guitar riffs. Or Solitaire because of its lyrics.

    But I pick PIEHOLDEN SUITE.

  10. On any given day it could be Shake It Off, What Light, Leave Me Like You Found Me, or I Thought I Held You.

    Agree on Shake It Off.

That, along with Walken, are 2 I've never liked.

Leave Me Like You Found Me & I Thought I Held You are 2 of my favorite all-time Wilco songs. Mostly for the vibe they put off. And I love the musicianship in the latter.

  11. Been listening the new album "Ruins" a lot of late. Agree with OP....the sisters' harmonies sound so damn good. The song "Fireworks" is classic, and "Nothing Has To Be True" is a powerful way to close out an album

Seek out the recent KCRW session. They do a cover of Heart's "Crazy On You" that might be better than the original. At least as good.

  12. One of standout moments, to me, listening the Jack White album teaser a couple weeks ago, is the opening phrase to "Connected By Love": "Woman, don't ya know what I'm suffering from. Ease my pain....". I liked how it sounded.

Then, when the song was released with the video, hearing that audio bit married up to a visual of the Virgin Mary statue was really powerful for me. The song is, overall, uplifting &. hopeful & passionate. Cool organ. Like the background singers.

Interesting how music can hit, or not hit, people differently.

  13. As a stand-alone, Force Awakens was a good movie. And, if considered as the only other Star Wars sequel or prequel, The Last Jedi is a even better.

But that's not the reality. The original, beloved trilogy from the late 70's and early 80's DID exist. And that original trilogy was something extra special.

I think Disney made a mistake. Either give the Skywalker family a noble, worthwhile exit over the last 3 films, or start the next generation films post-death of those characters. Disney wants their cake and eat it too...try to satisfy the old guard AND get every young male and female in the world on board as well.

None of you agree that the new films lack the soul that the originals had?

  14. No, that's what the prequel trilogy was. Specifically midichlorians.

And how did Obi-Wan die again?

Luke, Leia and Han Solo were in the original three. Let the next generation get theirs.

At least the prequels had Lucas' amazing world-building. And Episode III almost made the prequels worthwhile.

Obi-Wan, in the original 3 films, didn't have the swagger that Solo had. Solo shoulda died in a way where maybe his cockiness and confidence got him in trouble.

My biggest issue is, if Disney decided that they just want to get on with the next generation and dump Solo/Luke/Leia, then they shoulda just announced that the new Star Wars takes place many years after Return The Jedi...far enough in the future that Solo/Luke/Leia were dead.

Why didn't they? Really simple. Had they announced that, they know millions of middle-aged fans of the original trilogy may not have wanted to invest in a new trilogy.

Again, it's a kick in the balls. Watch Hamill's reaction after the premiere. Listen to him talk about it. It's seems apparent that Hamill got suckered. He seems to have no idea Episode VIII was his end.

Worse criticism on the new trilogy: if their concern and focus is the next generation and wanting fans to care about and love Rey/Poe/Finn, I think they've done a not-so-good job...none of the characters resonate emotionally like any of Solo/Luke/Leia. Heck, I'd add Obi-Wan, Yoda, Vader and maybe even Lando. To me, there's not much soul in the new trilogy.

  15. Anybody else, who were fans of the original trilogy, feel like this newest go-around of 3 episodes is a big middle finger to fans of the original trilogy?

We saw Han die un-heroicly, without fight in Force Awakens, Princess Leia virtually a non-role, and maybe 20 seconds of Luke all the way at the very end.

    Now Luke's gone.

I get that Disney needs to make a billion-plus every year on their new purchase, but no need to kick us fans of the original in the balls so hard.
