Gary Smith - producer and manager of a ton of bands I love - died the other day.  He ran Fort Apache Studios in Boston, and produced Pixies, Throwing Muses, Tanya Donelly, the Feelies, Blake Babies, The Connells, Juliana Hatfield, Scrawl, 10,000 Maniacs/Natalie Merchant, and Billy Bragg.  A lot of great stuff was produced at Fort Apache including Uncle Tupelo's No Depression, Radiohead, Weezer, Dinosaur Jr, Buffalo Tom, Superchunk, and Yo La Tengo.  Sad day.

    RIP

Two episodes into  The English on Prime, definitely shot nicely. Interesting lead character - the whole Indian - US Soldier duality.

Also started watching the sitcom The Inbetweeners (British) - nice way to unwind down from The English.

I thought The English was really good. I won't do any spoilers.

I didn't watch a lot of new movies in 2022, but I very much enjoyed this one on New Year's Eve.

It was worth it just to watch David Lynch lighting a cigar. He was fantastic. Michelle Williams was, too.

My wife and I enjoyed this. Aubrey Plaza was excellent and I agree it was "better than most of the crap out there". Could the ending have been better? Maybe, but it could have been much worse. Hell, due to the previous comment, I was expecting the main character to kill everyone with a box cutter and become the new credit card fraud king of L.A. From how bad the ending was supposed to be, I honestly didn't know what to expect. I've seen movies that required some serious suspension of disbelief. This wasn't one of them. Due to her circumstances and situations, I could understand her saying "Fuck it" and going full selfish criminal. As far as ending up where she did? It's possible. SPOILER ALERT She could have driven to Mexico (I assume it was Mexico) before Johnny and Janey Law kicked her door in the next morning. There are far more unlikely outcomes. It's interesting how folks can have such different reactions.

I just thought it was a bit abrupt, I wanted more. The film wasn't that long & they could've shown how Aubrey got to that place for instance. I still liked the movie.

I’m doing something similar tonight with a friend,  Happy Hour at a lovely restaurant that’s a little too pricey for dinner, then Holiday Lights at Turtle Back Zoo.

Chuck and Donna, sorry to hear of about your bad luck.  I’ve been having expensive house issues here myself over the past few weeks.  I’m trying to just go with the flow and keep reminding myself that stuff happens when you own a house. Thankfully it hasn’t been anything as awful as losing power or a refrigerator.

I wore myself out this morning between taking care of refrigerator & a dump run with the spoiled food. Pretty major sinus infection so went to bed when I was done. I did well though. I researched online & ended up going to my little local appliance store that's been around over 50 years. I got a scratch & dent (nothing major). Managed to get out of it for $635 which includes delivery, haul away the old one & tax. It was $300 off the regular price. Feel good about managing to avoid the big boxes, getting a good deal & supporting local people. I try to do that as much as possible. Not a fan of corporate concerns! Delivery is tomorrow morning. + my goddaughter is happy. She's my landlord & trusts me to handle stuff like that for her.

What did you think of this?  I struggled with the idea that this film is classified as a comedy.  I struggled with the film in general and didn’t really like it very much.

I saw Babylon the other day and absolutely hated it.  I thought it was a self-indulgent, offensive piece of trash and can’t believe it’s nominated for five Golden Globe awards.

I think it’s been a very weak year for film releases during the holidays.  Usually there’s a whole bunch of new films released just before or on Christmas that I want to see over Christmas/New Years.  This year, Babylon is the only one that interested me at all.

Ya, it definitely wasn't a comedy. I checked it out because of the good reviews. In that category, I thought the Fabelmans was much better. The holiday movie schedule was definitely lame this year.

Try to stay warm and cozy on this chilly, blizzardy Christmas! I hope you have the company of people and pets you love, good foods and drinks, music that makes you happy, and gifts that surprise and delight you!

    Merry Christmas, all! :wub

    Merry Christmas to you, also.

Despite Beltmann, who I’m sure is correct as he’s never steered me wrong on a film yet, finding fault with the ending, I too love Aubrey Plaza and am planning on watching.

Ya, ending not the best. Film better than most of the crap out there. Aubrey is really good in it.
