  1. A few nights ago I accompanied my wife Kristine to a psychic mediumship reading. I don’t honestly believe in any of it, but she does, and that’s what mattered. It took place in a restaurant with about 20 attendees and the psychic going from table to table.

When the psychic gets to our table, instead of focusing on my wife, as I hoped she would, she turns to me and starts faux playing guitar. “I’m seeing a guitar player?” Playing her air guitar rather frantically, she continues that he passed too early from some sort of drugs, but it wasn’t his fault. That description fit no one I knew personally, however someone I made a movie about comes to mind...but I say nothing.

She continues that he wants to thank me for what I did. And she’s saluting me now. Going between the guitar playing and saluting me. I mentioned how I made a film about someone who fit that description, but never met him. She explained she had an author who was writing a book about someone from 300 years ago, and that was the person who appeared to her. She then mentions New York, that I have a New York connection with this person. Now, with only one exception, New York was where we saw every Wilco show with Bennett. And Kris and I on the drive over had been talking about the YHF show in New York in April, and the tribute Jeff paid to Jay. The psychic keeps saying that this guitarist wanted to thank me, that I did a great job, and salute me for what I did. And it ended there.

So, despite being a skeptic, I’m going to go with Jay Bennett thanking me from beyond the grave for righting the wrongs of I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, and making it right with Where are you, Jay Bennett?

It could be real, it could be all nonsense. I’m still a non-believer, but then I don’t believe in coincidences either. It all certainly left me thinking...

Wow. It’s such a trip to get on here and look around after being gone for so long. So much time has passed and so many things have changed. With that being said, Jay Bennett is still such a unknowingly huge reason I fell in love with Wilco. This documentary is long overdue and I don’t mean that in a “what took you so long” way.  I mean this man is worthy of more respect and gratitude than he’s ever received since being kicked out of the band This doc (although I’m super late to the party) is so good. I wish I had known about it and the opportunity to pitch in on the kickstarter. I’ve recently went back to my Bennett solo stuff and got on the internet looking for lyrics and tabs and chords stories and pictures and I was so disappointed. What a huge disappointment. I’m disappointed in how seemingly forgotten Jay was and really still is. Hardly and tabs, Apple Music has the lyrics for Cars Can’t Escape on Bigger Than Blue but nothing for the other songs. Nothing with lyrics popped up on the first page of google. It’s really hit me hard the last few days and it’s such a damn shame. The dude really was something of a genius….a mad scientist and the band was better because of it. I’m usually not this outspoken about these types of things but the bands best shit *for me anyways, was. WITH Bennett. I love Sky Blue Sky. In my opinion it stands out the most of all their released stuff post Bennett. But cmon man. The dude was so freaking good. Then you put him and Jeff together?! It was as close to a Lennon-McCartney as anything I’ve ever personally witnessed. Sounds crazy and it probably is but those guys songwriting and musicianship shaped me in a very profound way and I really wish I could have met Jay. I would have loved to tell him “Thank You” He deserves so much more credit than he ever received. I enjoyed this documentary so much. Donna, and the other people that have added stories and feelings from the heart about the man and his music was such a joy to read. Despite it being almost 3 years ago that this was posted, it was sweet and refreshing and I’d like to thank you guys as well! Here’s to Jay! 🍻

Thank you so much for the kind words...and yes, needless to say, I agree completely.  (Well, I actually think The Whole Love is the best post Bennett Wilco album, but that's nitpicking...LOL)

  12. MONDAY / CHICAGO / WORLD PREMIERE / LIVE TRIBUTE

    Where are you, Jay Bennett?

Jay was always trying to make us laugh, but instead he will break your heart...

Get tickets now (some may still be available at the door the night of the show, if we have not sold out by then)

  13. Wilco fans...one week from tonight in Chicago, the World Premiere of my newest music documentary, Where are you, Jay Bennett? at the gorgeous Davis Theater.

I took on this project because I truly believe the music made by Wilco during the Jay era is amongst the greatest rock and roll ever created. That Being There, Mermaid Avenue, Summerteeth, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot are collectively as good as anything any band has ever released. This film is a tragic love story to Jay, Wilco and the music they created, as well as the gorgeous collection of records Jay released as a solo artist, music that never received the attention it deserved.

There will also be an all-star tribute to Jay's music immediately following the screening. As well as a Q&A with me and co-director Fred Uhter.

    Monday, November 15th at 7:00pm (Jay's Birthday)

Tickets are moving quickly...please get yours now for this once-in-a-lifetime event!

  14. TWO WEEKS FROM TONIGHT in CHICAGO!

The WORLD PREMIERE of Where are you, Jay Bennett? at the amazing Davis Theater.

A feature-length documentary on Jay Bennett, a legendary musician and recording studio savant, who as a member of Wilco, was a large part of the genius behind their three seminal albums (Being There, Summerteeth, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot -- he co-wrote most of Summerteeth and YHF with Jeff Tweedy), as well as the Mermaid Avenue/Woody Guthrie sessions with Billy Bragg. Bennett went on to a critically acclaimed solo career, before dying tragically at the age of 45.

    Get your tickets now...

  15. Just want to say thank you to everyone who helped make the kickstarter campaign for Where are you, Jay Bennett? a success.

I just finished the sound mix yesterday. As usually, Matt Gundy (this is our 13th film together) worked his magic. The film sounds GREAT!

Can't wait for everyone to see it...

  17. Just added two never-before-seen pieces of RARE vinyl to the Where are you, Jay Bennett? Kickstarter campaign. If they sell, I have two additional copies to offer, but they will be at a higher price.

And noticed the early-bird DVD sold out, so we've added 20 more.

This movie will rock your soul and break your heart...please help us past this final step. (We know legal & insurance is not sexy, but it's important.)

    Thank you!

  19. Because I like you guys, you get first shot at tickets. (And if you're in the Chicago area, block out the night on November 15th, Jay's Birthday.) But if you're in Connecticut, get your tickets asap. There are only 85 available for this sneak peek.

And it'll be the only public screening until the World Premiere in November.
