Yeah, it's gotten gnarly. Something about Facebook tends to move things towards a base level argument which is a lot of feelings, but not a lot of thoughtful discourse. Now the posts about people griping about what other people keep saying are one step removed from the music. I'm trying to figure out some of my own guidelines for how fans can pick apart of piece of art without it descending into whatever went on there.

I don't need other people to like this record the way I like it, I can tell some people's appreciation dwarfs my own fanboy tendencies. I think where it gets off course goes along with the same guidelines for writing critically about anything. To add to the conversation one simply needs to form a thought about the work, and connect it with a specific example. I can see how people get irritated with the very broad "These guys haven't released a good album in 15 years" hot takes, or the opposite "They've only done magnificent work and if you don't know it's cause your ears are broken". It might feel like someone is informing you that something you've been enjoying is actually crap and they just wanted to show up to tell a stranger that message.

Once again, I've enjoyed reading the reactions on here ranging from glowing, to mixed, to overall disappointment. The Facebook comments don't all seem to come from the same place.

    Right.

And a huge part of the lack of thoughtful discourse is people don't know how to have that discourse without insulting/putting down previous works (that many people do love). There's a way to say you liked this album without putting down Ode to Joy, Schmilco, Star Wars, etc.

Hoo boy, that FB group is a doozy.  There seems to be some PTSD response going on there over the fact that there isn't 100% agreement that CC is a masterpiece.  Lots of words being put in the mouths of the people who aren't won over by the record.   There's constantly someone starting a new post lambasting the underwhelmed, refusing to let it go, and then acting as if it's the underwhelmed who won't shut up about it.  Basically calling people ignorant and other insults....trespassers, meathead rockers, "You think Wilco is unworthy of you", "You think Wilco OWES you something."  I have not seen that kind of behavior from the underwhelmed directed towards those who love the album.

Very bizarre and thin skinned.  Like a cult.  It's gross.  When this group was highly active some years back, I don't recall it ever getting like that (not that we didn't have disagreements or arguments)...which is weird because web forums are more anonymous than FB, so you'd think it'd be easier to devolve into flame wars here than there.  But what do I know?

I like the album, and I respect people's opinions that they don't like the album.

To jff's post, I really think the invention of social media has made people feel like their opinion is extremely important when in fact it really isn't. I would care for my friends' opinions, but I don't give a shit what a random person thinks about something I didn't make or I am not involved in.

Man that stinks - I hardly ever fly, but I always thought airlines tried to get people a new flight, after cancelation.

They did, tomorrow afternoon. I’d miss the second Wilco set.

  4. 7th grade teacher here. I don't see my students until 9:10 and I still can't figure out what to say. I just can't look them in the eye and tell them it is going to get better when I know it won't. Nothing is going to change. All bets are off once tragedies like Sandy Hook became acceptable in our country.

  5. Just a few...

    I've been through hell

    On my way to hell

    Talk to me
I don’t want to hear poetry
    Say it plain
    Like how you really speak

As bad as it seems it’s worse than expected

    I’ve been ashamed
    And afraid
    I still feel loved
    When you say my name
    In a sad kinda way

But our fears were never real enough so we would just project

    Freeze my warmth away
Tear the tears out of your quiet face

I can’t seem to find the email with the “Cruel Country” access code. I did receive my digital tickets for the festival at the same email address where I get my Wilco HQ emails. I’ve checked junk mail as well. If anyone has advice I would greatly appreciate it. Really looking forward to hearing the new record before Friday night. Thanks in advance for any help!

Send an email to hq@wilcoworld.net with proof that you have tickets to Solid Sound. Several people have done this and received a code.

"Wilco had started work on new a record before the pandemic, it was art pop. We had been working toward some new ideas that would be exciting to us."

I hope that one surfaces eventually. I'd like some upbeat Wilco after so long they've been on other travels. Haven't heard a sniff of the new one yet and it was a new wave country (Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam, Lone Justice) that lead me to Wilco via Mermaid Avenue in the first place back in the day, so it could be great also.

I seem to remember he said something along of the lines of being loud and joyous.
