  1. Backstage at Largo

    Friday February 25

Orphan (Spencer on thigh slaps. Macie Stewart & Sima Cunningham on backing vocals.)

    — Jeff explains that they are backstage at Largo at the Coronet Theater.
    — Jeff gets his “game face” on, as do the rest of the band.
    — Jeff can’t reveal who’s next door in the backstage area because it’s a surprise for the audience. Susie says that the surprise was ruined on social media by using the surprise guest’s initials. Jeff jokes “how do they know it’s not Norm Oscarberg.”
    — the band members give Susie their names & ages.
The Losing End (Neil Young cover. Spencer on thigh claps & backing vocals. Macie, Sima, Liam & Sammy on backing vocals. James Elkington on an unplugged electric guitar.)

It Must Be Love (Labi Siffre cover. Spencer, Macie, Sima & Sammy on backing vocals and thigh slaps. James Elkington on electric guitar.)

    — Jeff hopes that the show gets picked up, while they’re out in Los Angeles.

We were all treated to a very surprise stream of the backstage rehearsal. I sure hope that Norm Oscarberg was a hit tonight.

  4. Haven’t watched it yet, but TCM is playing the elusive Looking For Mr. Goodbar at midnight (or in 90 minutes EST). This is one of those oft talked about films that never had a DVD or Blu-ray release in the U.S. & shows up once every five years or so on cable. I believe the issue was the music rights which were rumored to be astronomical with all of the disco songs in the film. Others think it might be due to the subject matter & Diane Keaton’s dark role.

  5. Just now, bböp said:

Well, Mavis was wearing a Tweedy Show T-shirt so I should have guessed that the live stream was on. Go ahead and post what you want. I already posted the complete setlist. It'll take me a few hours later to actually write something coherent.

Thanks! It was more about not really being able to see who was behind Jeff in Mikael’s place.

  14. I decided to try to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife yesterday, before all of the kids go on a holiday break this coming week. I was the only person in the auditorium. I thought that it was a beautiful film that hit all the right spots & emotions. It’s truly a love letter to the fans and it ends in an exciting place that made me fill with excitement.

I think the timing of this film is rather perfect for the generation that grew up with it. It’s a perfect film to take your kids to and let them fall in love with another franchise. The young cast was all around terrific, especially Mckenna Grace. Jason Reitman did a fantastic job with the script & tone of the film. I really want to experience it all again.

My only gripe is that it didn’t get a summer release because it is set during the summertime and it feels like a classic 80s summer film.
    (Now playing only in theaters.)

  15. I decided that it was time to venture out to one of my local theaters to spend Saturday afternoon with Wes Anderson. The French Dispatch was a terrifically fun time, but also a celebration of journalism and the written word. This was one of his best films, in terms of cinematography and art direction. I even think some of his sets were miniature. The film’s structure was an obituary, a travelogue & 3 short stories. It was tough to pick a favorite segment, but I loved seeing Adrien Brody spar with Benicio Del Toro in one of the stories. I won’t spoil the plot of that one. Frances McDormand was also another standout, as was Jeffrey Wright and Tilda Swinton.

I anxiously await the physical release (Dec. 28th) to watch this film with subtitles on because it felt like his most verbose film. I never felt lost at all, but it was a lot to digest in one sitting.
    (Now playing in select theaters.)

  16. Happy Birthday, Via Chicago!!

Wow!! I really had to think about how I stumbled upon this place. I noticed that I officially signed up on June 1, 2004. I’m almost positive that I was forced to sign up in order to download the 2 shows from Otto’s, but I most likely lurked as a “guest” for at least 6 months. I chose my screen name because I saw a few people using other band names around here. Almost as if to say I came over here from this other band, but Wilco is doing something special that needs me to sign up for their message board and mingle. I’m not on any other band’s message boards.

A close friend of mine lent me his Wilco CDs in the fall of 2002, while I had a 45 minute commute to college. I was listening to The Strokes, The White Stripes, Starsailor, The Coral, Doves, Travis, Coldplay, Ash, The Music, Ryan Adams, Pete Yorn & Wilco. I saw almost all of them that fall of 2002. Wilco had a show at the Boston Orpheum that same fall that I forever regret not going to. I was a bit broke and all concerted out by that point, so I made a promise to see them the next time that they came around. I kept listening to them and the aforementioned bands kept falling out of my daily commute listens.

I finally got to see Wilco play in June of 2003 and I was completely blown away, as was my friend who lent me his CDs. He had never seen them either. That summer we went to 6 Pearl Jam shows and I went solo to see Radiohead for the first time. Wilco’s show at the Pavillion in Boston in 2003 blew them all away. That’s probably when I went home right after and looked for some sort of message board.

I remember a lot of the fun threads that people participated in. Paul’s top notch reportage. All of the music and film recommendations. The rumors about records on the way. Tour rumors. Setlist parties. The Random Thread. The guy that asked for advice about his fiancée that didn’t want to meet his family. It was all great fun.

The first two Wilco fans that I remember meeting were Paul & MeDave. I met them after a solo Jeff show in Northampton in Nov 2005. I also met Donna at one of the Solid Sounds (2015?) and parked next to Diane at the 2017 iteration.

I put these words together in a very special parking garage, while my dad went for his annual cardiologist visit in Boston. Unbeknownst to me, his cardiologist’s office is literally on top of the Wang Theater where I’ve seen Wilco 4 times. I had no idea. Here’s an exclusive look 🤪. The Wang  (phrasing) is below the skywalk to the right.

    9A6B7F3E-9C29-4484-9FEA-6102649336EA.jpeg

Of course, this celebration  would not be complete without thanking Jeff and all of the band. It starts at the top and has spread to all of the fans…clients.

edit: I also just remembered that I met Maudie in 2007. I was meeting up with her before  the Boston show to buy a ticket off of her for a friend of mine. My friends and I had no clue about the Silver Line bus shuttle to the Pavillion, so we had to walk what felt like forever.

Kudos to Donna, Eric & Analogman for keeping this place going! 🙏🏻

They must be going for a younger audience.

I think that might be true with the heavy participation in Sing 2. They must know how polarizing they are, so they figure to target young kids watching an animated film. The same concept got Elton John a whole generation of fans without the polarization. America is a much different place now compared to when The Lion King came out, so I wonder if parents will avoid this film knowing that Bono is in it. I can totally see that happening and hurting the film’s box office, but the studio can blame Covid for any sort of failure. And I say America because there will be different recording artists voicing the character across the globe. For instance, Zucchero will be providing his voice for the film in Italian markets.

The song is schmaltzy, but kinda decent. It’s nice to have something new from them. I just hope their next record doesn’t sound like this.

  18. I was delightfully surprised last night to find The Beta Test available to rent. I knew that it was being released in select theaters today, but had no idea that it was going to be a Same Day VOD. The film is a pitch black comedy satire of Hollywood & social media, while doing double duty as a thriller. Jim Cummings has successfully created another wholly original film, but this time with PJ McCabe who co-wrote & co-directed.

The overall exaggerated tone felt like homages to Altman’s The Player and the comedic scenes of Lynch’s Mulholland Dr. (The Cowboy scene & the production meetings with Justin Theroux, to name a few.). Cummings has a lot say here and it’s done in a surrealist manner that might put off some. He definitely knows how to play someone on the verge of a breakdown and he tops his two prior performances in Thunder Road & The Wolf Of Snow Hollow.

(available to rent wherever you rent movies or in select theaters in NY & LA.)

  20. I wanted to give a recommendation for a film that I consider to be one of the very best films that I’ve seen all year: Small Engine Repair. I saw a trailer for this film back in late August and noticed that it was set in Manchester, NH which is about a half hour from where I live. The film was actually shot in upstate NY except for a few aerial shots of the red mill buildings in Manchester.

Anyways, the trailer had me intrigued and I was surprised to see that it got booked in a theater in Manchester. It didn’t get much of a wide release around MA/NH, so I decided to go see it on opening day (Sept 10th) in said theater and I was completely blown away. It’s the first time in a long time that I walked out of a theater “all jacked up”, after what I had just watched.

John Pollono, the writer/director & star, created a terrifically written “hang out” movie with rich characters that felt real and themes that are extremely relevant. Jon Bernthal & Shea Whigham are fantastic as the 2 friends who make regular life experience stories into legends, while seemingly frozen in time. They definitely feel like 2 guys that you could see in any random bar.

The enjoyment of watching the film unfold is getting to the last half of the film which was a huge tonal shift that Pollono pulled off with expert craftsmanship. The trailer does tease what’s coming, so maybe skip it if you truly want to be surprised. I don’t think I’ve seen as great of a directorial debut in quite some time.

I was vaguely aware of the off Broadway stage play with the same 3 actors, so this all felt fresh to me.

  21. I was browsing the U2 fan pages a few weeks ago and found out that they will have a new song, Your Song Saved My Life, featured in the Sing 2 movie coming out this Christmas. Bono even lends his voice to a reclusive lion rockstar. The song will be released digitally tomorrow. I’m guessing that they’re trying to get an Academy Award. Losing to Eminem is understandable, but losing to the Frozen song was rough. The song sounds decent based off of the 30 second sample. It might be a leftover from the last 2 records. No one really knows when it was recorded. I guess anyone can record songs a lot more secretly during a pandemic.

TikTok was definitely an odd place to debut a sample, but there seems to be a reason for it. The other piece of news going around for several months was that U2 would not be releasing another deluxe edition to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Achtung Baby, but instead will have an “interactive” experience. The last piece of the puzzle coming together is that they are rumored to release unreleased studio & live footage from that era on TikTok on November 18th. Looking forward to that, but I never use TikTok.

  22. I didn’t feel the need to start a new thread, but Spotify added 2 new Jeff Tweedy songs today. They’re part of the Sub Pop Singles Club Vol. 6. They are C’mon America and UR-60 Unsent.

C’mon America sounds like it might have been played on The Tweedy Show, but I haven’t looked hard enough at the untitled songs to see which one. I thought that it might have been “I Love My Country Stupid & Cruel (Sing In The Choir), but it is not.

UR-60 Unsent is actually the song that Jeff called Film Strip, when he played it twice on an older episode of The Tweedy Show. That was quite the surprise to see that odd title and have it be Film Strip.

    Enjoy!!
