Only halfway through, my my first reaction is that this is the first album since AGIB full of songs that only Wilco could have made.

That is indeed Jamie Lidell, and he is worth knowing. After putting out a bunch of glitchy, experimental electronic music, he's now recorded a couple of amazing soul records (while still keeping his sampler chops intact). I've seen him a couple of times perform with just his voice and a couple of laptops, and both times ended with a complete party onstage. Check out these two clips to get a sense of the range of this guy:

Thanks, Mr. Böp! Glad you dig 'em. Also, regarding LouisvilleGreg's "more sinister" comment, some of the other songs have a nice, dark vibe, making for very good autumn listening. Some of it reminds me of Air or Tortoise, and all of them get better on repeated listens. Personal bias aside, I really do love this album; listened to it probably four dozen times while making the videos, and it still hasn't worn out.

Mikael Jorgensen's side project Pronto just released a new album, a collection of really lovely instrumentals. Many of the songs are from the same time period as the recently released "Unlikely Japan" and have a similar feel. Check it out on the Contraphonic Records website. Full disclosure: I worked on this project a bit (the videos), but I lurk here from time to time and noticed the long thread on the origins of 'Unlikely Japan', so thought I'd risk self-promotion and let y'all know it's out there. Hope that's cool

Now that the cat's out of the bag, here's a sneak preview of a video I just completed for the aforementioned Pronto track "The Monster". Official release coming soon-ish (with quite a bit of additional video downloads) from contraphonic.com. It's a good 'un. Glad that it's finally seeing the light of day.

Damn, that is close! Mermaid Ave. is a half-block from the venue... (It's the baseball diamond in the middle of the map.)

Three come to mind: 1. the first "shake it to the east, shake it to the west" line in Funkadelic's "Hit It and Quit It". 2. Betty Carter in "Can't We Be Friends", when she sings "through with love" and drops instantaneously through about 3 octaves and back. 3. "Sunken Treasure" from Tweedy solo (I think 1-9-2003, maybe 2004), singing "with you..."

1/9/2003, Jeff Tweedy solo at the Vic. First song of the encore, and the rest of Wilco makes a surprise appearance halfway through to finish the song (and the set). The crowd reaction is terrific.
