Is That The Thanks I Get

Recommended Posts

note: this is approximately what Tweedy plays and uses drop D tuning. Most chords are played as power chords or blues shuffles on the bottom 3 strings. For example, during the "we can make it better" bit I play the D and G like this:

----D---------G-

e----------------

b----------------

g----------------

d-0-0-0-----5-5-5

a-0-2-0-----5-7-5

d-0-0-0-----5-5-5

Is That The Thanks I Get

D riff: (barre across the 7th fret, I dont usually play the B string)

e--------------------

b--7------7--7-7-7-

g--7------7--7-7-7-

d--7------7--9-7-9-

a--7h9---7--7-7-7-

d--0------0---------

[D] Is that the thanks that I get [G] for loving you [D]

[D] Is that the thanks that I get [G] for telling you the [D] truth

[G] You say you wanna [A] know

[Em] Where I go when I go [G]

[Em] You say you want to [G] communicate

walk up:

e--------------------

b-2-3-5-7-8-10--12-9

g-0-0-0-0-0--0--0--0-

d-2-4-5-7-9-11--12-11

a--------------------

d--------------------

But you don't hear a word I [G] say

[D] Is that the thanks I [G] get for loving you

[D] Well I'm tired of the looks I [G] get when I come [D] home late

[D] And I'm getting tired of how you [G] forget the lovin' [D] things I say

[G] I hold you [A] tight

[Em] Treat you [G] right

[Em] Ah every time I [G] go out and play

(walk up)

Why you tihnk I'm leavin' [G]

[D] Is that the thanks I [G] get for loving you

Now [Em] faith, trust's the [G]strongest part of us.

[Em]That's OK but you [bm]must believe in our [A]love...ooohh

[D] We can make it better

[G] We can make it better

[D] We can make it better

[G] Pull ourselves together and [D]start it again

Solo: D G D D G D

[D] I hold you [G] tight

[Em] Tuck me in at [G] night

[Em] I don't [G] ever want to fight again

(walk up)

I think we're both crazy [G]

[D] That's the thanks we [G] get for falling in [D] love

[D] We can make it better

[G] We can make it better [repeat ad lib]

[G] Pull ourselves together and [D]start it again

I don't get it. Please excuse my retardedness.

Let me be more specific. During this part:

[D] Is that the thanks that I get [G] for loving you [D]

[D] Is that the thanks that I get [G] for telling you the [D] truth

[G] You say you wanna [A] know

[Em] Where I go when I go [G]

[Em] You say you want to [G] communicate

Are D and G played as open chords? Do you play the "D riff," and then just an open G chord?

Are G, Em, and A played the standard way, or are they some drop D variation? I'm guessing that G is played in the drop D variation.

In this part, I play the D as the "D riff". The G's and A's I play as power chord/blues shuffle thing:

----G---------A-

e----------------

b----------------

g----------------

d--5-5-5-- 7-7-7

a--5-7-5---7-9-7

d--5-5-5---7-7-7

The Em is just a power chord at the second fret

e--

b---

g---

d-2-

a-2-

d-2-

Basically everything is played as a power chord on the bottom 3 strings (the major chords have a blues shuffle, the minor chords do not) with the execption of the D chord, which is played as the "D riff" durng the verses.

Are you guys learning this in class?

Not as far as I know (if you're referring to the Old Town Wilco Ensemble, and not some other class).

That's what I was refering to. The word on the street is that you will be soon...

Just like Bob to steal my idea ;)

So how does the rest of the riff go?

edit: never mind - played it last night and you guys are right. It's the very first chord. I edited my first post to reflect it.
