When did encores become longer than the show itself??

LouieB

With Ryan Adams he tends to go off, freshen up, lose some band members then comes back on to do some different songs, not quite an encore until the real end of the show... that's been my experience anyway! :)

Neil Casal, the Cardinal's lead guitarist opened the show with a great set of his own originals. Ryan sat in on drums for two of these songs.

Ryan+ Cardinals put on a terrific show. Mr. Adams seemed to be in great spirits laughing often throughout the set, lots of banter between the band and some goofy comments towards the crowd. I was a bit disappointed in the home-town crowd. Some of the oddest displays of "frat boy" drunkenness I've seen in ages; (One guy w/a very limited imagination shouted, "F**kin ROCK-N-ROLL MUTHAF**KA" all evening long, pumping his fist into the air as if he were @ a Metal show and shaking his ass in a most embarrassing 'Elaine from Seinfeld' way. Another jumped onstage for a few moments and near the end of the second set some lovely person hit a roadie upside the head with a cup of beer just as the band returned to the stage to perform the encore).

Although I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and a true train-wreck to ensue, the band hung in there and put on a terrific performance.

Go see 'em. They're firing on all cylinders right now.

Well, the show in Knoxville last night was not nearly as good as the others reviewed in this thread. Ryan played for like an hour and a half (one set, no encores), and hardly said a word to the crowd. Several songs off Jacksonville City Nights (which sounded great), only 1 off Cold Roses (Let It Ride), nothing off Gold, only "Shakedown" off Heartbreaker, a couple Grateful Dead songs, and a bunch of stuff I didn't know. :ohwell Neal Casal sang 3 songs during Ryan's set. :hmm

I'm kinda disappointed, but at the end of the day, his voice sounded beautiful as usual, and there weren't any crazy/embarrassing antics...so I guess it could have been worse.

That's too bad, ES. It reminds me of the first time I saw him: Even though he'd just released a freakin' double CD, he insisted on playing tons of stuff from Jacksonville City Nights and 29. I love Ryan, but that's the thing with him -- you just never know what you're going to get at his shows.

man, those are the best types of Ryan shows imo ;)

not that i don't find his comments funny, but often times that leads to rambling, which leads to trainwrecks, which the last 2 shows of his i've seen have been.
