Favorite Tweedy Line

"Oh.............If the ocean were whiskey,

and I were a duck.

I'd dive to the bottom

and never come up."

Variations of this appear in tons of traditional, bluegrass, and country songs. So much so, I doubt anyone can truly claim it as their own. That said I'm always happy to hear in different contexts.

"Summer comes and gravity undoes you/

You're happy because of the lovely way the sunshine bends"

--Not For the Season/Laminated Cat

p.s. subquestion: most head-scratching "what-the-hell" lyrical moment? mine: "take off your bandaid 'cause I don't believe in touchdowns"--I've got NO idea what that means.

Another one of those tough questions with mutable answers... :music

It's then I'll think of you and I'll wonder if you knew

When I got blue and things got weird

And I started growing Bob Dylan's beard

I could almost swear that the first time I saw "The Late Greats" performed, the line was "The best laugh never leaves your lungs." Surprised to see that it was "life" on the album. I sort of like the way I originally heard it better, but its still a great line.

"and as your spine starts to shine, you shiver at your sould

a fist so clear and climbing punches a hole in the sky,

so you can see for yourself if you don't believe me.

there's so much less to this than you think."

-less than you think

In my opinion, one of Wilco's most underwhelming songs as far as music has one of the best choruses in Tweedy's catalogue.

I also love all of the lyrics of Cars Can't Escape and Venus Stop the Train

"There's a whisper I would like to breathe into your ear,

but I'm too scared to get that close to you right now"

"In the beginning we closed our eyes

Whenever we kissed you were surprised to find so much inside"

1st and last verses of Pieholden Suite, simply brilliant!

Holy crap! Great/tough question. So many of you have given lines that I love, and I'll admit that mine change from time to time, but I've always loved:

"I always thought that if I held you tightly

You'd always love me like you did back then

Then I fell asleep in the city kept blinking

What was I thinking when I let you back in"

Are there really ones like these?

The ones I dream

Float like leaves

And freeze to spread skeleton wings

I passed through before I knew you

This will eventualy get inked on my body someday.

I think the debate isn't whats on the cd. On the album version of radio cure its obviously no way but in many live versions its pretty clear its A way or THE way.

seems to be that tweedy's always in a better mood live than he is at his desk writing songs or recordings

EDIT: "p.s. subquestion: most head-scratching "what-the-hell" lyrical moment? mine: "take off your bandaid 'cause I don't believe in touchdowns"--I've got NO idea what that means."

Since when does Jeff Tweedy have to make sense :) but i've been wondering about that too, if anyone has a semi-decent explanation for it i'd like to hear it (somehow i doubt even jeff knows...)

Guest Speed Racer

'I am an American aquarium drinker

I assassin down the avenue'

'we slip and slide on the stay-together landmine

I make my mind up to never be myself

and everytime I make a rhyme

I live my life for someone else'

'there's a fortune inside your head

but all you touch turns to lead

you think you might just crawl back in bed

with a fortune inside your head'

I'd like to thank you all for nothing

I'd like to thank you all for nothing at all

I'd like to thank you all for nothing

Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing at all

Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing at all

She's in the kitchen with bitter, diamond drunks

I'm on the sofa, hoping she leaves that punk

Sorry if it was already posted :yay

I find it next to impossible to not sing out loud when that line comes up :dancing

Good call.

I keep my distance

Because she falls in love with everyone

Smoking grass and taking Christmas trees

She falls in love with me

I'm polite to her

I reached my soft hand out to her

I've known her for a very, very, long time
