I was thinkig about a Tom Waits line from his first album

"You're my north star

when I'm lost and feeling blue

the sun is breaking through the clouds

don't you know that it's true

all the other stars look dim around you"

I don't know if it is "sad" but it's a hell of a line

Ben Folds - The Luckiest

I find this a happy song...funny how people interpret others music.

One of the saddest songs I've ever heard is called All This World by Arco.

Grateful Dead - "Brokedown Palace"

Bonnie Prince Billy does a deadly cover of this song!

Please tell my brother ALWAYS makes me tear up. Especially now since his mom passed away...

listen dear mother

I miss you the most

and as I travel

from coast to coast

I feel your love

and I feel your ghost

listen dear mother

I miss you the most

listen dear mother

I miss you the most

this may sound like a joke, but any form of "have yourself a merry little christmas" makes me sad.

Me too. That song is really sad.

"Nowhere Near" by Yo La Tengo.

Tom Waits- "The Fall of Troy"

It’s the same with men as with horses and dogs

Nothing wants to die

Ethel and James they killed in a game

With guns too big for their hands

Just off St. Charles in no man’s land

And you’ll have to find your own way home, boys

You’ll have to find your own way home

The oldest was Troy, an eighteen year old boy

Shot dead in March in a robbery

His brothers started out to hell and to ruin

Troy’s killer was never caught, they say

Young Nick, he just went bad that day

Now he’ll have to find his own way home, boys

He’ll have to find his own way home

Why cook dinner, why make my bed

Why come home at all?

Out the door and through the woods

There’s a world where nothing grows

It’s hard to say grace and to sit in the place

Of someone missing at the table

Mom’s hair sprayed tight and her face in her hands

Watching TV for answers to me

After all she’s only human

And she’s trying to find her own way home, boys

She’s trying to find her own way home

My legs ache, my heart is sore

The well is full of pennies

Solomon Burke- "Valley of Tears"

I've been riding high, but i don't know why everybody wants to send me down to the valley of tears. It's a sunny day and i'm on my way but everybody wants to send me down to the valley of tears.

People stand in line just to hear me cry.I wanna know the other side

but everyone i choose only brings bad news.Everybody wants to send me down to the valley of tears.

People stand in line just to hear me cry.I wanna know what's on the other side.

I've been riding high, but i don't know why cause everybody wants to send me down to the valley of tears. It's a sunny bright day and i'm on my way but everybody wants to send me down to the valley of tears.

Bauhaus-All We Ever Wanted Was Everything

Niiiice. The lyrics are great, but this one is just haunting:

All We Ever Wanted Was Everything

All we ever wanted was everything

All we ever got was cold

Get up, eat jelly

Sandwich bars, and barbed wire

Squash every week into a day

The sound of drums is calling

The sound of the drum has called

Flash of youth shoot out of darkness

Factorytown

Oh to be the cream (repeat)

BTW, the apocalypse is upon us - a youtube video of Murphy & Reznor playing with TV on the Radio confirms that Peter is FAT now. Woe, but it's the end times for sure.

I'd also say The Trapeze Swinger and half of Elliott Smith's catalog applies here, but I'll go with Between the Bars because no one mentioned it. And even if it's a cheesy toss off I Figured You Out has made many a female cry in my presence.

And how about a nod to some old school ballads. Call me cheesy again, but this one always got me as a kid:

Well, where, oh, where can my baby be?

The Lord took her away from me.

She's gone to Heaven so I got to be good

So that I can see my baby when I leave

This world.

We were out on a date in my daddy's car.

We hadn't driven very far.

There in the road, straight ahead,

A car was stalled. The engine was dead.

I couldn't stop so I swerved to the right.

I'll never forget the sound that night;

The cryin' tires, the bustin' glass,

The painful scream that I

Heard last.

Well, where, oh, where can my baby be?

The Lord took her away from me.

She's gone to Heaven so I got to be good

So that I can see my baby when I leave

A-this world.

Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.

There were people standing all around.

Somethin' warm running in my eyes,

But I found my baby somehow that night.

I raised her head and then she smiled and said,

"Hold me, darling, for a little while."

I held her close. I kissed her our last kiss.

I found the love that I knew I would miss,

But now she's gone even though I hold her tight.

I lost my love, my life,

That night.

Well, where, oh, where can my baby be?

The Lord took her away from me.

She's gone to Heaven so I got to be good

So that I can see my baby when I leave

A-this world.

Mmm

Tom Waits - The Day After Tomorrow

I got your letter today

And I miss you all so much, here

I can't wait to see you all

And I'm counting the days, dear

I still believe that there's gold

At the end of the world

And I'll come home

To Illinois

On the day after tomorrow

It is so hard

And it's cold here

And I'm tired of taking orders

And I miss old Rockford town

Up by the Wisconsin border

But I miss you won't believe

Shoveling snow and raking leaves

And my plane will touch tomorrow

On the day after tomorrow

I close my eyes

Every night

And I dream that I can hold you

They fill us full of lies

Everyone buys

About what it means to be a soldier

I still don't know how I'm supposed to feel

About all the blood that's been spilled

Look out on the street

Get me back home

On the day after tomorrow

You can't deny

The other side

Don't want to die

Any more than we do

What I'm trying to say,

Is don't they pray

To the same God that we do?

Tell me, how does God choose?

Whose prayers does he refuse?

Who turns the wheel?

And who throws the dice

On the day after tomorrow?

Mmmmmmm...

I'm not fighting

For justice

I am not fighting

For freedom

I am fighting

For my life

And another day

In the world here

I just do what I've been told

You're just the gravel on the road

And the one's that are lucky

One's come home

On the day after tomorrow

And the summer

It too will fade

And with it comes the winter's frost, dear

And I know we too are made

Of all the things that we have lost here

I'll be twenty-one today

I've been saving all my pay

And my plane will touch down

On the day after tomorrow

And my plane it will touch down

On the day after tomorrow

Morphine-The Saddest Song, or either Tom Waits' Time, or The Day After Tomorrow. All of those are grim weepers

didnt even see that zoom had already posted The Day After Tomorrow. Good call.

Then I'll say a great deal of New Order's Substance is quite sad.
