Is there a better band in music today?

Recommended Posts

I agree with the nature of this thread completely. Wilco is one of the best, if not the best working band out there. For me, the Flaming Lips are close behind, followed by The Shins--their new record is great!--Sonic Youth, Califone, Ben Kweller, some Arcade Fire, and Paul Westerberg.

I know I'm preaching to the choir...

1. Great lyrics, songwriting, & musicianship

2. They great live

3. They make unbelieveable studio records

4. They change their sound w/ each record

5. They make albums in a CD/MP3 age

6. They release records for their fans to hear 2.5 months before the scheduled release date

Am I missing anything?

yes, acdc blows these guys away! :rock

My Morning Jacket it up there for me. I'd say Wilco is better overall, but that isn't really fair, as Wilco have been around for longer. MMJ live is just an EXPERIENCE though. As good as it feels when the band comes back for an encore, thats what an ENTIRE MMJ concert it like.

I say MMJ at the Rivera, than Wilco the next day. I enjoyed both concerts, don't get me wrong, but MMJ blew them away. Wilco is just older and in a different place now, and thats cool.

I don't think Beck works to his potential, he's super incredibly talented, but then he half-ass-es his albums to make shitty videos with his friends.

It's all because he's fucking Scientologist.

And I concur with the general statement. No one is even close.

I'd say Radiohead wins for most important/best band of this generation.

Someone on another board made the album comparison between Radiohead and Wilco. I'm paraphrasing but:

AM : Pablo Honey - Rough around the edges, big hit song (Creep/Casino Queen)

Being There : The Bends - guitar albums, breaking into mainstream

Summerteeth : OK Computer - ok this is a stretch, but still both bands got pretty big because of these records

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot : Kid A - the masterpieces

A Ghost is Born : Amnesiac

Kicking Television : I Might Be Wrong - the live albums

Sky Blue Sky : Hail to the Thief

It'd most likely be the general consensus among the music folk.

i'd like to think that music folk don't imagine an award for most important/best band of a generation. i can understand why someone might think radiohead is the most exciting act today, but i'm no part of this radiohead generation.

though i do give you that radiohead and wilco have a very similar number of albums.

Arcade Fire's music could never contend with Wilco. I can't think of another band still making music today that has 4 or more members, all extremely talented. Wilco has 6 :P and if you count every generation of the band you can add several people to that number.

I like Arcade Fire a fair bit, but I think they've got to prove themselves a bit more before I'd rate them as highly as Wilco. I don't like either of their albums as much as I do some of Wilco's albums, but I feel that they could quite easily make something in the future that would change that opinion. As for bands that I rate as highly as Wilco, I can only think of Super Furry Animals as a band who have changed from album to album and still held my attention without getting caught up in their own hype, like lots of other bands tend to do.

going back to the wilco/radiohead comparison, though they both have about the same number of albums and both went more experimental, i think the band most comparable to Wilco's career is the Flaming Lips. They both have about the same level of success, though the Flips have probably sold more albums, both are well known but are outside of the mainstream. Both have had one universally acclaimed album. And both only have their original singer and bassist.

never got into Radiohead...I kinda think Thom Yorke takes himself too seriously. I mean, eventually, the guy is going to have to smile! He has to deal with that!

Wilco is indeed the best band around, dare I say ever.
