I'll buy a few of these. Are they doing the Gabriel-era ones like this too?

Edit: I would imagine so.

From what I've skimmed and gleaned from the G boards, it'll be a while. Nick Davis, the engineer, is working on them, but Peter gets very involved in the details and it gets painstakingly drawn out, apparently. This is all very interesting with some good stuff, but it's gonna mean forking out a lot of dough - I'll do it for the Gabriel era stuff probably, but that's it I think.

Genesis Wraps Reissue Series With 13-Disc Box

Genesis

August 27, 2008 , 11:05 AM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Rhino's comprehensive Genesis reissue campaign will conclude Nov. 11 with the release of "Genesis: 1970-1975," a 7-CD/6-DVD collection loaded with rare material and 5.1 DTS audio mixes.

The boxed set includes the studio albums "Trespass," "Nursery Cryme," "Foxtrot," "Selling England by the Pound" and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway," all of which feature original lead singer Peter Gabriel.

Each album includes a corresponding DVD with film footage from the era and 2007 interviews with band members. Among the highlights are 1972 performance footage from Belgian TV and Rome's Piper Club, found on "Foxtrot," and 90 minutes of live video from 1973 on Italian TV and at Paris' Bataclan, found on "Selling England by the Pound."

Collectors will be thrilled with the disc "Extra Tracks 1970-1975," specifically four songs recorded in 1970 for a documentary about painter Mick Jackson that never materialized. "Provocation," "Frustration," "Manipulation" and "Resignation" pre-date Phil Collins' arrival in Genesis by a year and are all previously unreleased.

The rarities disc also boasts a demo of "Going Out To Get You," three tracks from the BBC show "Nightride" and the 7-inch single "Happy the Man."

Why are they not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with (Rush, Cat Stevens, Doobies, Yes, Chicago, Tull, Cars, Cheap Trick, Moody Blues) some more then others and some others to add as well.....But just gets me steamed when John Mellencamp is in and those are not.

an absolute mockery that Yes and Genesis are not in

both astonishingly inventive (supper's ready ... close to the edge) ... both enjoyed later commercial success (follow you, follow me, etc ... owner of a lonely) ... both survived massive personnel changes to enjoy later creative peaks (trick of the tail, wind & wuthering ... going for the one, etc.) ... both got huge contributions from numerous band members (banks as important to the songwriting process as gabriel, plus hackett, rutherford & collins very active writers as well ... howe, squire, had as much to do with the writing as anderson) ... both un-freaking-believable live ...

two of the best bands ever

tell me who has ever had superior seven-disc runs than yes / time & a word / yes album / fragile / edge / topographic / going for the one / or trespass / foxtrot / cryme / lamb / trick / wind & wuth / and then there were 3

mind-blowing

yeah, let's put johnny cougar in

travesty

Very nice! I'd like to hear wheelco's take on this.

well, I'm here now and I'll weigh in

First, the 70-75 Gabriel box set with DVDs and all is being released very soon, like this week. Frankly, I've got all the remastered CDs and then forked out $40 for Archive 1 a few years ago, and you (Scott) benefited from it in the form of some gabriel era concert tracks and the Lamb live. So, not sure if I'll buy it right now, but I go over to the Genesis boards about once every other month (I'm "peng" of Stereolab fame there if you want to do any reading) and if the DVD reviews are good I'll buy and pass on the info in this thread. Anyone else who wants some good live or rare Gabriel or prog Genesis without paying through the nose can PM me.

Otherwise, I was at the Rock Hall in Cleveburg last month and loved it, but Genesis was a glaring omission, and they even played at the induction ceremonies last year. That's actually good portent for induction shortly, I think. Not sure of Peter's chances of getting in personally. Phil won't get in on his own in my opinion, and I'm not really a Phil fan outside of the band. He was a very, innovative drummer around 1980 though.

I'd personally vote for Yes also, but they're a longer shot than Genesis

Thanks Dave. :thumbup I'd be curious as to why you would think Yes is a longer shot than Genesis for the R&RHOF though. During both bands' creative heyday Yes was an enormously popular band - especially their LPs and concert sales. Genesis really was under the radar of many until Peter left, and they started making 'radio-friendly' tunes.

Really though, both bands (and Rush for that matter) deserve to be there. Two of the best bands ever, indeed!

I played some gigs with David Hentschel, producer of the first 5 Collins era Genesis albums. I played the guys tunes for two years, but he was in the US rarely. My favourite Genesis story was told by Percy Jones around 96, Hentschel was in town producing Brand X (Manifest Destiny) . . . so Percy's story had to do with Collins (1st) wedding and the jamming during it . . . seems Jon Anderson called "I Shot The Sheriff" and Percy was trying to disappear whilst playing a tune he didn't know . . . and Banks and Rutherford were sitting and waotching going hmmm or something . . .

ok so it loses something in the translation . . . but it was funny the way Percy told it . . . Goodsall was listening to this tale asking Percy . . .where was I? . . .

(the band i was in was Blue Thunder a songwriting project of David Hentschel and Paul Williams (juicy lucy, holdsworth i.o.u. band))

i'll edit in some more trivia later . . .

Genesis Holding Out Hope For Gabriel Gigs

November 03, 2008 , 1:15 PM ET

Gary Graff, Detroit

With a third box set of catalog upgrades looming, a reunion of Genesis' revered 1971-75 lineup is still in the ether -- but hardly in stone.

"We've never said never about it, you know," keyboardist Tony Banks tells Billboard.com. "I know Phil (Collins) would be quite happy with the idea of just playing the drums; it would be quite fun for him. Mike (Rutherford) and I are certainly happy to do it. I know Steve (Hackett) is keen as well. I think it'd be down to Peter (Gabriel) more than anyone else."

Gabriel was actually the first to broach the idea of reuniting that Genesis lineup, initially for a handful of performances of the 1974 concept piece "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway," in 2004. He later pulled back in order to concentrate on a solo album he's still making. It did lead to Banks, Collins and Rutherford reuniting for a tour in 2007, and there are still hopes that the older roster will eventually do something together.

"It would be fun to do something like that purely for the fun of working together again and seeing where it takes you," Rutherford notes. Hackett adds that, "I think we should do this before one of us dies; we're not getting any younger, to quote one of the songs, so maybe one day it'll happen." Banks, meanwhile, says that rather than merely "The Lamb...," he'd like to see the group "do a sort of best-of from that era. You want to do things like 'Supper's Ready,' I think, and 'The Musical Box,' definitely."

All of that music is showcased on "Genesis: 1970-1975," a seven-CD and six-DVD box set that includes upgraded editions of all five albums the group recorded between those years. Each has a DVD of time-appropriate performance footage and new interviews, as well as a set of rare "Extras." It's the third in a series of boxed reissues, saved for last even though they're earlier recordings.

"I think they're the ones there's possibly more anticipation for," Banks says. "These albums have a reputation but they probably didn't sell as many in the first place, so there's a feeling that they have a chance to do something now."

Banks says Genesis is considering some further catalog reissues, including a possible boxed set of the group's several live albums as well as issuing single shows for sale via band's Web site. He's also put together a remastered version of his 1979 solo album "A Curious Feeling" that he plans to release in 2009.

My point was that the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is possibly the most important record to Trey Anastasio and a huge influence of Phish.

I lost my vinyl copy moving last year :hmm

Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was one of the finalists for the Halloween show of 1998. VU's Loaded won out.
