More on the "controversy"

Recommended Posts

Right, it has nothing to do with the product it's selling. That was the whole point. It's just a song that happens to be on the radio while the action in the commercial is going down. Whereas if "She's a Jar" is playing over images of a jar, the song seems to be about the product itself rather than what it's actually about.

I think the Volkswagon equivalent to using "She's a Jar" for mayonnaise would be "Cars Can't Escape".

And this?

One could also interpret the lyrics as the tow truck driver falling in love with the car's styling - changing the original intent of the lyric - no?

Aman,I can see how you might feel that passion played a large roll in this controversy, but when is it just too much?I for one can say I am guilty of acting on passion, and that my passion can easily turn into agression.I just remember when I was younger, going to Phish shows and seeing how neggative people were to the bands music, yet going to every show on tour. Not that Wilco has that knid of fanbase, but what if it did,I bet it would look very much the same.

I think people here are more likely to be less critical of Wilco and give them a pass on almost anything they do.

I have a tendency to be too negative at times - I will freelly admit that.

Maybe that is what separates the person who has thousands of cds/records/tapes from the person who merely listens to the radio once in a while - an overwhelming feeling of desire to speak freely on the music they are crazy about.

I mean - I have done nutty things to get music before - such as skipped paying bills. I have also chosen music over friendships - I am not saying these things are right - just the sort of thing I have done in the past.

I have also done these things, especially the friendship part.

I am not quite that nutty these days - but I still get rather involved with music.

For better or worse, commercial TV has become one of the few public forums where you'll occasionally hear snippets of good music.

The radio? not so much.

I'm surprised no one else has explicitly championed this statement. There's almost more of a sellout to get a song played on a mainstream radio station. Why would this be considered better than having your song play over a commercial? Is it because the actual money and/or collusion involved is harder to see? Getting the music out in the open is the most important thing, and there are just different avenues for it in 2007 than there were 20 or 30 years ago.

Without trying to rehash the same arguments over and over again, I fail to see why this option (especially now) cheapens anything about the art unless a person chooses to allow just that to happen.

Do you really need your love for the band to be justified by the masses?

Wow, how old are you, that you are so wise?

I'm hoping someone will start a thread about this thread.

A reality show crew is documenting the blog entry I'm working on about this thread - I'll start a thread containing a YouTube link to it once the deal with Apple is hashed out.

wow, I take a week to move and look what I miss. Thanks for posting the blog Sue.

anyone remember when Bob Dylan was in a Victoria's Secret Commercial with his song "Love Sick" ???

i think someone asked or made mention that vw=ok viagra=not okay and questioned the difference. quality of design. vw puts a lot of thought and "art" into their commercials, if they didn't we wouldn't be able to mention the "pink moon" commercial (or remember that synchronicity commercial). you could even go onto their website and find out more about the bands that made the music for the commercials. that's how i found out about nick drake and i rarely even watch tv. you know a vw commercial when it comes on, you don't even have to see the car in it.

I forget who it was (I'm thinking it was John Mellencamp), but they said something along the lines that the best way for some bands to garner attention to their new CD is for their songs to be used in commercials. The VW commercials definitely won't make me want to go buy a new car but I think it's another avenue to advertise a new CD, somewhat like moxiebean says.

I think you're right and that it was John Mellencamp that said that, during an interview on All Things Considered on NPR. His song is now the official song for Chevy and apparently helped his album sales immensely compared to trying for radio play.

It's all the same to me - and I still think threads that have some meaningful discussion where many people participate is better than a bunch of random threads were only a few select people participate.

Awesome - I'm hoping to see an ad for it on TV soon.

The commercial will use a song by my new punk band, Sharp Provolone.

I'm not sure that's the best example to use, if you're trying to convince others that the band has not sold out.

That's the really cool thing about debate for me. Sometimes it stretches the boundaries of my brain box...shifts my paradigms, pushes the envelope, shakes the sheets.
