Wilco to perform at Outside Lands Festival in SF This Summer

Beck's scientology and no ins/outs be damned! I'm going. My awesome husband bought tix last night! I've been to SF only once. Any ideas for a cheap place to stay near the park? It doesn't look like there are any hotels within walking distance. I've found some B and B's, but will I mind walking around the park at night? Excellent restaraunts I can't miss?

The park is going to be so packed at night, you won't have any worries walking around. Here are a few B&Bs, etc., in the area. I've never stayed at any of these, so I can't give you any info on what the places themselves are like, all I can comment on are the neighborhoods:

UCSF is a big, prestigious medical center in the inner sunset, so lots of people come into SF for medical procedures that require having family nearby for a few days, or longer. So they've got the line on places to stay in the neighborhood (some of the places above will be on their lists, too).

They will reportedly have five different stages so yes you will have several artists playing at the same time. That's always the big problem with these kinds of festivals: choosing between the artists you want to see who are scheduled to perform the same time. Just this past weekend at Coachella I could only stay for half of Spiritualized's set because I wanted to catch all of My Morning Jacket.

I hope they don't have Beck and Radiohead on at the same time at Outside Lands because those are the two acts I'd want to see most on Friday.

On another note, I'm wondering if Wilco might add a secret San Francisco show the night before, possibly at the Fillmore. When they played Coachella a few years back, they had a surprise show the night before at UC San Diego.

Yeah, I think I've posted in here already, that I'm hoping for Wilco to be headlining on the second-biggest stage, while Jack Johnson draws the majority of the crowd away to the big stage.

How would we hear about the secret show?

I like the idea that of secret of only fellow, awesome Wilco fans, but how would we find out?

I highly doubted that wilco would pass through the Bay Area and not play a local show outside the festival, though for awhile now I've thought my initial assumption must be wrong but the idea of a secret show has given me new hope.

i thought the same thing about ACL last year and they did not play a show outside the festival well, they did the ACL taping but only like 200 people get to go to that and it's an enormous hassle to try to attend.

i don't remember that show being a secret, i remember it being announced like a normal show except when the tickets went on sale they changed the band name to some wilco-related word, i forget what. hey, that was my first wilco show! but seeing as i'm going uc berkeley next fall i could really really go for a night-before show at the college.

I guess it's a moot point now but what I meant by a "secret" show was like the pre-Coachella San Diego show they did a few years ago. It was announced on their website only a short time before the show and was on sale at Ticketmaster as Catseye. So basically if you were a Wilco fan who checked their website or Via Chicago you knew about it.

I think when they played at the Fillmore here a few years ago, it was technically a "secret show". Although after sweating about whether or not they were going to actually do a Fillmore show (they were doing shows in Oakland and San Jose that same weekend) we realized later that it had been printed on the back of the tour t-shirts from the get-go, long before it was announced. Ha!

I'm considering heading to SF for this festival. The line-up is just the best of the summer for me. But I am already going to quite a few for various reasons (Telluride Bluegrass, Northwest String Summit, Austin City Limits Fest, RockyGrass, Folks Festival) so I'm really on the fence. I know this is the first year of Outside Lands, but does anyone know what this will be like? Is it just one stage with the bands one after the other with a short break in between (I'm assuming yes, because they have not released any sort of schedule like ACL has)? If so, I'm worried that I will end up being disappointed as I will be too far from the stage to really enjoy. I am not one who likes to fight my way to the front at shows like this. That's what I like about ACL. With all the different stages, you can catch a lot of music and only the main stage feels huge. Thoughts? I'm wary of shelling out so much cash for yet another festival not knowing the scoop.

I posted this previously. It's supposed to be 5 stages. Probably the same as HSBG, minus the Porch Stage, plus a huge-ass stage at the Polo Fields (check the map of GG Park for that one).

 

Folks who've been to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass: I'm thinking they're going to use the same set-up, or something similar. I think they said on KFOG this morning, 60 bands on 5 stages. Although they might put a big-big-big stage, for the headliners, at the Polo Fields (it's an easy walk, I skipped over there from Hardly Strictly for my niece's soccer game).

Thanks for the response. I looked through the thread before posting but must have overlooked your earlier post. If they are doing multiple stages, it really sucks that they haven't announced a schedule. I'd like to make a determination on whether I should plunk down the cash and make the trip to SF, but I don;t want to if a bunch of the artists I want to see overlap. ACL Fest has announced their schedule and that fest is laster in the year.

They've added a few more acts (Toots & the Maytals, Rogue Wave, The Walkmen, Mike Gordon, Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet feat. Bela Fleck, Vienna Teng, Howlin' Rain, Everest, The Dynamites and Carney), but still no stage schedule. Grrr.
