Just picked this up:

Beto Villares - Beto Villares

On first listen, it's pretty good. Some tunes are a little too Esquivel/lite rock for me, but there is enough variety on there that the effect of that cheesiness is minimized. I like it. Not enough to displace my Happy Ashtray pick, but enough for it to most-likely place Top 5.

Sadly, I haven't heard all that I want to hear....including Bon Iver and Blitzen Trapper.

But of what I HAVE heard, my favorite 3 are:

The Walkmen - "You and Me"

The Raconteurs - "Consolors of the Lonely"

Okkervil River - "The Stand Ins"

(just bought Vic Chesnutt and Elf Power's new cd, "Dark Developments" and sounds good so far)

Man, I really like the music on The Stand Ins, but I wish i could get an instrumental version of that album. The lead singer's voice kills me. I felt the same way about The Stage Names.

All those that weren't initially pleased with the new My Morning Jacket please spend one week with it. Listen to it all the way through, every day. Let's come back and discuss. You can't use the excuse that you already gave it a fair shot. This is my plea to those that sound like my former self with respect to this record. Enjoy.

So far I have to say:

My Morning Jacket-Evil Urges

Very fun record and I like how they are evolving.

The Raconteurs-Consolers of the Lonely

Much better than their first.

Dr. Dog-Fate

Raphael Saadiq-The Way I See It

Mates of State- Re-Arrange Us

Biggest Disappointment: Beck-Modern Guilt

Mates of State- Re-Arrange Us

Funny you mention them, as I received the CD a few days ago and like it a lot. I've even purchased their four previous CDs. They make the kind of pop I like - recommended to fans of Beach Boys, Sparks, B-52's and New Pornographers.

There's still a bunch I need to listen to/digest a little more, but these are my favorites so far:

Top Two

School of Language - Sea From Shore

TV on the Radio - Dear Science

The Rest

Beck - Modern Guilt

Calexico - Carried to Dust

Destroyer - Trouble in Dreams

The Dirtbombs - We Have You Surrounded

Dodos - Visiter

Dr. Dog - Fate

The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

Joseph Arthur - Temporary People (much better than the very uneven Let's Just Be)

Aimee Mann - @#%&*! Smilers

Okkervil River - The Stand Ins

The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

Sons and Daughters - This Gift

Spiritualized - Songs in A&E

Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer

Thanks to this thread and the fact that it's 1:45am and I can't sleep, I'm currently checking out April by Sun Kil Moon. All I can say is so far so good. His voice reminds me of Jason Molina, and the songs are really lovely. We'll see how this climbs up on my list in a couple days

After at least three listens of every CD I bought this year (about forty), there's no contest to me, the best tunesmith around is:

51GI6xdghTL._SS500_.jpg

Number 2: Laura Marling (revelation of the year)

Number 3: Jolie Holland (musical poetry)

Dr Dog is also a grower, and in my top 10

Kasey Chambers/Shane Nicholson - Rattlin' Bones

is pretty good. I'd say it's the best album that she ever did and is worthy of Top 5 consideration for the year.

yeah it is... not in my top 5 just yet, but loving the hell out of it. not sure why i didn't really dig it when it first leaked earlier this summer.

Probably because their last record and tour they focused on being out there and absolutely shock rock. Now they're interested in being a band, and it shows on their new record.

On a much lesser scale ( than Solace anyway who's exposure to new material is prolly "Gi-Normous ) I just get overwhelmed by new releases.

I downloaded the new Deerhunter when it leaked also. Upon it's actual release and subsequent press I got around to re-visiting it. Nice surprise.
