She Sells Sanctuary and/or Firewoman

I'd probably pick "Rain," especially the live version I've got from the Roxy.

other ones I've thought about today:

whiter shade of pale

anytime (mmj--can't sit still when the guitar comes in)

and your bird can sing

out there (dinosaur jr.)

opening solo to eminence front

I'll have to run through the new ipod tonight to actually get some zingers.

Tony Iommi's opening riff on "Symptom of the Universe" is the wickedest, most evil-sounding intro evah.

"California Girls"

The Beach Boys version, not the Diamond Dave version.

That said...

"Hot For Teacher" has a pretty great opening, too!!!

Some obvious ones, but still need to be mentioned:

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze (and a bunch more)

Derek and the Dominos - Layla (though I must admit I prefer Bell Bottom Blues on that record)

The Kinks - You Really Got Me

Little Richard - Tutti Frutti

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Prince - Let's Go Crazy

Dream Syndicate - Tell Me When It's Over

The Only Ones - Another Girl, Another Planet

The Cure - Just Like Heaven

Mott the Hopple - All the Young Dudes

Revolution --- The Beatles. Let's you know where it's going. John slamming and screaming

Thunder Road --- Bruce Springsteen. The Harmonica and Piano set a mood. Damn but if you can't actually see that screen door and the teenage goddess named Mary.

Tangled up in Blue --- The way the guitars chime is...well...fucking sublime
