Not sure what the plan for it is now that Jay's gone, but it would be something to consider.

That's the link to download the album. If you haven't heard it, please take the time. It's some of the most beautiful music Jay ever wrote.

I get goose bumps every time I see that scene......great song .....should've been on YHF if at all at least "hidden'' on the end.     -Robert

This isn't in anyway a confirmation but as of 6:58 eastern his wikipedia page has news of his death: Jay Bennett.   --Mike

Does anyone know Basil II (Robert) well? He's a huge fan of JB, is there a fast way to contact him?   --Mike

in perspective, his life wasn't *that* unfair...he got to make music for a living. while he may not have made the greatest living off of it, he was still blessed enough to get to do what he loved. i don't think he'd say that's unfair at all.

Good perspective. It's always good to celebrate someone's life in these times rather than dwell in the sadness. Always easier said than done, though. :(

dammit this sucks. i always felt jay got shit on in his life, and it was usually partly his fault, but that still it wasn't right that things turned out for him the way they did. he was on top of the world in 2001 and just his personality and his obsession and his idiosyncrasies got the best of him and the band voted him out... and he's been basically in a rut creating solo albums for the past 7 years. he seemed to me to be someone immensely talented but not blessed enough to lead a full band on his own. his voice was just too polarizing to create mass appeal. i think he could create all the songs, write all the lyrics, but still he'd just be hurt having to sing the songs himself. if he had been just born with a better voice he'd be equivalent to the likes of jeff and others, but he got the short end of the stick on that one. and then now this premature death he again gets crapped on. poor jay, sometimes life just isn't fair.

He made a great album for Blues Traveler. Did he have a major role in any other releases that we can check out?

I read his last blog on Myspace, and it's heartbreaking, as is his passing. I will always remember him fondly.

There's an airline plane

Flies to heaven everyday

Past the pearly gates

If you want to ride this train

Have your ticket in your hand

Before it is too late

If the world looks wrong

And your money's spent and gone

And your friend has turned away

You can get away to heaven

On this aeroplane

Just bow your head and pray

unfair in the sense that he didn't get to live his life to its fullest potential. he accomplished a lot, but i think he had a lot more in him, and now it's been tragically cut short. i agree that he definitely got to do what he wanted to do in life, which is more than most of us probably can say (including me). still i always thought he'd find another situation where he'd climb back on top. he was just too great a talent to be writing obscure solo albums that very few people were exposed to.

So many brilliant talents never untangle from their shadows long enough to reach full potential. He and Tweedy made rare magic together. Alchemy. What a huge drag.

think of me

as one you'd never figured

would fade away so young

with so much left undone

For those looking for the Palace 1919: http://www.emusic.com/album/Jay-Bennett-An...d/10775402.html

Here's yet another version know as the Palace at 4am Rough Demos. This was never exactly commercially available or put out through a label, so I think it's okay to share it here.

Incredibly sad...

Listening to 9/16/00 - Toad's Place - New Haven, CT right now. This is one amazing show and really demonstrates Jay's chops outside of the studio.

RIP.

Thanks, Been there many times but missed this one. Just downloaded it.......This is an absolutely great show.......Jay will be missed.

wow unbelievable. this is very unexpected news.

well jay you were a huge part of wilco's most creative years, always a huge talent that worked underneath the radar, and if this board is any indication (which it is) you were widely dismissed even amongst the wilco fan base and never given proper credit for what you brought to the band. wilco would not be what it is today without you, and i'd say it would be 1/10th as popular if you had never brought your direction and your ideas to the table. the jump in the level of artistic quality and songwriting that came between AM and Being There was just monumental - it has to rank as one of the all time best transformations in all of rock history - the likes of Radiohead moving from Pablo Honey to The Bends. Pretty much anyone who had been following Uncle Tupelo listened to Tweedy's Wilco debut and thought "mmkay, that's nice... but Uncle Tupelo was so much better." I think few could make that argument after BH, Summerteeth, and YHF. you were/are a musical genius and i think time and history will eventually look favorable upon you for your contribution to this band we all love (at least more so than has been the case in recent years).

Very well put Mastershake

Im sorry I never got to see him play again after he left the band. I was just playing copy of a 1997 show last weekend and reminiscing about the band back in those days. I wish I'd had the chance to thank him for his part in making the "soundtrack" that helped get me through a rough part in my life. The changes in Wilco's sound during his tenure then led me to explore many other types of music I had never listened to before. I am grateful.

"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them. So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." J. Michael Straczynski

That quote has always been a great comfort to me, so I thought I'd share it here.

I wonder why the Tribune and Sun Times both chose such unflattering pictures to run with their write-ups.

The photo on the Tribune page right now isn't unflattering in the least. I know that they had another one earlier but it wasn't too bad either.

He is their 'lead' story right now.

RIP Jay.

I was at that Toad's Place show. If I remember it featured a ton of Mermaid Ave. stuff and Jay really shined. The Airline to Heaven version was especially good.

I'll always look back at the shows I saw with Jay in the band as special. Thank you for all you've done for the music I embrace, Jay, and the inspiration you've given me and everyone else here in this community.

I was watching this the other day, and thinking about how sad it is that Jay wasn't even featured in the video. Now it's even more distressing.

Our love is all of God's money

Everyone is a burning sun.

I've always thought that you were one of the cooler posters around these parts, Dreamin'. Seeing that you're a JMS fan only helps to cement that impression. B)

(And that is a wonderful spot of wisdom, to be sure.)

This is just brilliant Dreamin' Judy ... you always come up with the most perfect quotations! :wub
