I had a bad feeling he would pass this year. His guitar playing is mind boggling, and his inventions/innovations played an immesuarble part in the progression of modern music making and recording.

Single most important figure in the history of recorded music? Probably.

No Les Paul = no rock n' roll.

And yeah, the invention of multitrack recording... what can you say? The guy was to recorded music what Henry Ford was to manufacturing.

And how could you not like this guy?

And, regarding playing into his 90's while suffering from arthritis:

"If you only have two fingers [to work with], you have to think, how will you play that chord?" he told CNN.com in a 2002 phone interview. "So you think of how to replace that chord with several notes, and it gives the illusion of sounding like a chord."

According to the A.P., Les Paul died today at 94. Waiting on a link.

This hit me a hell of a lot harder than I would have ever dreamed.

The irony in this is that not only is this true, but rock and roll also put a serious damper on his career when his style of music went out of favor and he no longer charted hits. Also I had not realized until I read his obit in the Trib that he played here in Chicago with a country band on WJJD way back.

RIP Les

I saw him play back in 07, the last time I spent any significant time in the city.

I'll never forget as I introduced myself his genuine "hey how ya doin" reply.

I bought my first Les Paul @ 17 yrsold, and I'd been a fan way before that.

Thanks for everything Lester/ "Rhubarb Red"/ Les.
