Now I remember why I was an independent all those years.

ahhh. smells like freedom.

i can't imagine why people are afraid of their country being taken away.

If one wants to be listened to and/or taken seriously, they first have to agree to debate within the parameters set forth by reality. You cannot simply make shit up, example – death panels, and then go on to argue against a bill that in no way shape or form proposes, endorses or even has the slightest inkling of interest in actually even remotely fucking considering, on the basis that passing said bill will result in metaphorical gas chambers. You’re free to do so, but from where I’m sitting, you’ve just sequestered yourself in a cage from which no one will have any desire to hear what you have to say – i.e. – rather than have your freedom (of speech) taken from you, you’ve given it away - freely. You still have it, it’s just that no one wants to listen to you.

Freedom, real and meaningful freedom, at least how I define it, has very little to do with jumping up and down at full volume, spouting the most ridiculous nonsense, demanding to be heard. You’re more than free to behave that way, but the listener is also free to tell you to, a.) shut the fuck up, or b.) ignore the shit out of you.

(“You” not meaning you, but the asshats who, for example, bring firearms to healthcare debates)

you guys control all levels of government and, still, it's everyone else's fault.

I’m not a democrat. Though this statement sounds familiar…hmmm…

My point is that people who are getting free care, are protesting others getting free care.

But they paid in to Medicare, and the two kinds of free care are drastically, drastically different. And besides, participating in a government-provided program does not prohibit you from criticizing or protesting that same government's future programs, does it?

Sure they paid into it. I'm paying into it. You are too. Is it gonna be there for us?

Do I care? Not really. I'm pretty young, but still sure I've paid taxes for programs and benefits that won't ever get back to me. Those are the rules of the game, they are NOT changing anytime soon, and frankly I'm okay with it.

fantastic? whatever. nice sarcasm. My point is that people who are getting free care, are protesting others getting free care. Concering the statement on the race thing, I'm just trying to understand the hatred for Obama. I was at a family reunion a few weeks ago. Dunno why I went, honestly. I look at these people I share DNA with an hear the hate, but for what good reason? No one could could offer, not that I'm gonna ask a buncha mean closed minded white people from Avon Ohio that question.

primary meaning of "fantastic" is "based on fantasy; not real." You were deriding old people for placing their money in trusts in order to avoid inheritance taxes while living in nursing homes paid for by your taxes. Is this a big problem in your community?--rich old people employing tax-sheltering devices while living in state-funded nursing homes?

That shit is NICE. My last family vacation was at a state-funded nursing home in Topeka. Clearly, you haven't spent much time at these places or you wouldn't be knocking them.

You didn't - I was continuing your thought (or so I thought :hmm ), arguing that no one with a sound head on their shoulders and money in the bank would live in a nursing home if they could possibly avoid it - not least of all under the pretense of saving money.

Once again, I have to express my love for G.O.N. and yellow peppers.

Aw shucks, it's mutual (though I'm more of a red pepper man). :thumbup

Yeah, well, that’s because the government it taking away our brains, and replacing them with cantaloupes – aka – socialism.

Edit - Or, maybe your brain is being tapped to fund an even larger collective hive mind, and your hard earned resources are being used to fund the brain of some dumb ass – but again, aka – socialism.

God no, I think "Speedy DB" rolls off the tongue much better, myself. And since most of what I say is crap anyway, Diarrhea would probably be the most accurate name change I could execute. :blink

Actually, yes, I know a few people who have been the beneficiaries of this situation. I'm not saying this is the every day normal thing, but it happens. This will probably get me labled as a dirty commie, but if you didn't earn it, you should probably pay taxes on it. I pay taxes on what I earn.

I mean what is the real argument on helth care? Is it resentment? that people shouldn't get something they dont pay for? or didn't earn? I mean it goes both ways. Wall Street got a bunch of $$ that it earned by screwing us. That amount of money is way more than all of the poor people getting welfare.

I frankly don't know where you stand on any of these arguments. You just said "This will probably get me labled as a dirty commie, but if you didn't earn it, you should probably pay taxes on it." What does that mean?

I would also love to meet some of these friends of yours who have their wealth tied up in tax-avoidance shelters while living in state-funded homes. I want to party with those folks.

I really don't care what the government does with health care so long as it does not interfere with the final season of Lost.

And if you become one of the "rich old people", you can even pay it twice!!!

People that paid taxes. And are out of a job, and may need some medical care but cant have it. Cause that would be socialism.

If they had it with their job, they probably still do.

How long do COBRA benefits last? Is that it? COBRA? I thought the benefit was decreased from the "employed" time benefit, and that it ended after a pretty short period. I got riffed from a job in 2001, they told me it would have lasted only like six months. It really want that great.

I don't know. Once someone doesn't work for me anymore, I don't really pay attention.

From DOL website:

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides for premium reductions and additional election opportunities for health benefits under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, commonly called COBRA. Eligible individuals pay only 35 percent of their COBRA premiums and the remaining 65 percent is reimbursed to the coverage provider through a tax credit. The premium reduction applies to periods of health coverage beginning on or after February 17, 2009 and lasts for up to nine months for those eligible for COBRA during the period beginning September 1, 2008 and ending December 31, 2009 due to an involuntary termination of employment that occurred during that period. The TAA Health Coverage Improvement Act of 2009, enacted as part of ARRA, also made changes with regard to COBRA continuation coverage.

What a crock of shit this is, too. Employers have to front the 65%, and then apply for this tax credit. It really is a joke.

I don't want to see old people or disabled people dead in the streets or poor.

So either the government funds healthcare and they send everyone's grandparents to the gas chamber, or they don't and the streets fill up with dead bodies? No wonder this debate goes nowhere.

Can I make the statement that the folks here that do not support health care reform also feel that global warming is bullshit?

Well, the planet has been cooling for like 10 years...

COBRA coverage lasts for 18 months

And up to 36 months with a second qualifying event. There are caveats to the recent 35% payment though. For example, if you're eligible to join your spouse's plan, then you have to pay 100% of the premium like normal.

I thought cow flatulence was one of the major contributors to global warming

This poll appears to tell us little more than that folks do not approve of the way the bill is being handled, and not the particulars.

Exactly. If I was polled today, I'd probably say that I disapprove of the president's handling of the issue--but not nearly as much as I disapprove of the way Republicans are handling it.

I can't remember where, but earlier today I read that national polls suggest roughly 70 percent favor a Medicare-style public plan as part of health care reform.
