Late to the GBV party, but I noticed that they're coming to my city (Lexington KY, woohoo!), and was listening to the new record today (How Do You Spell Heaven).  I like the record, but a little intimidated by their back catalog looking at this thread and the Spotify list.

What do you all think of the new one?  How are they live?  Where to start in the massive archives??

Everyone will have an opinion on what to listen too, but most will include Bee Thousand at or near the top of their lists. I like Isolation Drills, Earthquake Glue, August by Cake. I like these because I tend to like concise pop songs From them.

Robert Pollards CD's have a ton to offer too.

I'm a  GBV follower and if I had to start somewhere it would be with "Under the Bushes, Under the Stars."  So many albums, so little time.  But be careful.  Once you've entered, there's no turning back..

I'd start with the Propeller/Vampire on Titus cd if you can find it. Mighty lot of good songs on that. I started on Bee Thousand when it came out.

Overwhelming but very rewarding listening experience.  Most of the album recommendations above are spot on.  If you are looking to sample a range of his material, here's a link to a Spotify playlist I cobbled together last summer.

the new record is very, very good.

Yeah, like maybe a couple notches better than everything since they got back to it, right?

I've only streamed it but it seemed like it had more memorable tunes than Class Clown, or Bears for Lunch etc.

The last one was pretty good, too although maybe could've used a little editing. Not Robert's strong suit haha. The current lineup is strong with Bobby Bare Jr & Doug Gillard. I read 1 review that compared the current era/lineup with the TVT era. Not a bad comparison. There were a lot of good songs on the TVT records & the production values were a little higher. The only bad thing these days (& for awhile now) is the overgrown frat boy contingent. Gets tiresome. Wasn't that way in the earlier years. First time I saw them was Alien Lanes era & have been a loyal follower. I gave up on trying to be a completist though. Got to be too much.

I never warmed up to Class Clown, but Bears for Lunch is a solid record.  I think I'm ready to say HDYSH is the best GBV record since Earthquake Glue.

Great time to get on board.

Hey thanks for the playlist!  Really appreciate that... enjoying the journey.

And Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, and the new one are damn good.  Thanks all.  Come to Lexington on Oct 6 and I'll buy you a beer at the show!

if you don't think that Pollard was the greatest songwriter at some point in his life, consider "Do The Earth" and "He's The Uncle" were both obscure b sides...

Robert has said that he can write 3 songs whilst on the toilet & 2 them would be good. Saying that he is a character is a vast understatement. I used to have 2 records of nothing but his drunken rants during shows. Hilarious.

The new very limited edition live record "Ogre's Trumpet" is phenomenal. Think only made 1000 LPs & 1000 cds. The current GBV lineup may be the best yet. They've been together a few years now & are really tight but with plenty of GBV anarchy. In a word, alcohol haha. Doug Gillard is a great guitar player. Highly recommended.

Saw my first GBV show tonight. Had a drink from a bottle of tequila that Robert handed to the audience to pass around. And saw him briefly and complimented him on the show outside the venue afterward. That was a damn good show!
