Best bands from Africa, S America and Asia?

Recommended Posts

Considering over half of the world's population lies in these continents I find it strange that artist from these continents rarely make a splash in America culture. What are your favorite bands from these continents?

The only bands I can think of are

Asia:

Cibo Matto

Puffy Ami Yumi

Electric Eel Shock

Boris

Africa:

Youssou N'Dour

South America:

Sinergia

Help me expand my horizons! :cheers

Africa:

Ali Farka Toure

Baobob Orchestra

Mansour Seck

Baba Maal

S.E. Rogie

Thomas Mapfumo

Asia:

Indian classical music- Ravi Shankar has some accessible stuff which could serve as an introduction

Ali Akbar Khan

Chinese classical is also quite good ( such as Lei Qiang) but with my Asian music recommendations I am really stretching the definitions of what you probably mean by "band"

South America:

no clue. good question.

Tinariwen are pretty amazing, the latest issue of Mojo has an Africa disc that really impressed me, particularly these guys.

This was going to be my pick. I hope I'll get to see them one day.

Asia:

Puffy Ami Yumi

Electric Eel Shock

So, Puffy Ami Yumi are good? I see their cds at the library all the time, but have always passed them over. I think the "cute factor" tricked me into thinking the music couldn't possibly be any good. Now I'll probably never see their cds again.

My old band opened for Electric Eek Shock several years ago. They were really incredible. Good call.

I have 1 of their albums Splurge. It is a fun disc. Not groundbreaking but it puts a smile on my face. :D
