Naming my band "World Record Players"

Recommended Posts

so i've started band in this, my junior year of college. As of now there's me on guitar and vocals, bass, drums, trumpet, and sax. We're really good as of now, and we've started playing a lot of funky/rock tunes.

I've always loved the "World Record Players" line from Monday, and I think it's not only a great tribute to one of my favorite bands, but it's a sweet name! You can do a lot with it. I was thinking of having our logo be a picture of earth with sunglasses and a chain on it. Maybe he'll be spinning a record too...or maybe half of him will be the earth, the other half a record.

What do you guys think about this? Just curious.

Honest opinion...I don't like it.

I have no idea what your band sounds like, but World Record Players doesn't strike me as a good name for anything but some sort of international DJ collective. Left Arm Tan, despite any possible intended irony, is a far better band name in my eyes.

Considering your logo idea as well, it speaks to me as some sort of charity organization, bringing music to far corners of the world. Not exactly a band, and if it was a band, it's too literal of a logo. Unless, of course, it's so amazing a design that it simply must be used.

I apologize. It's the designer in me coming out.

A little off topic but does anybody else here get mad when you are in a record store and you're thumbing through looking for Uncle Tupelo albums and there might be 1 but there's like 50 Uncle Cracker CDs? I always think to myself how messed up this world can be.

I hate that as much as I hate Uncle Crapper, and that's a lot.

The world is filled with stupid band names: The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Dr. Dog, Eels, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Pearl Jam. Even Uncle Tupelo and Wilco are kind of dumb names when you REALLY think about them. But if the music is good the name will become numb to people after awhile.

Personally, 'World Record Players' sounds like a Revue type band...which may work for you. It's kind of a soft/easy to forget type of name so you might have to work even harder to get people to notice. Just saying is all. Good luck.

What would be a good band name?

World Record Player is not bad, It does not immediately grab me though, I have to admit. It kind of reminds me of when I was in a band called Industry Darlings which was meant in only the most ironic sense because we are a crappy bar band.

I think we are going to name our new band "Just the Tip". Thoughts?

"World Record Players on a Tour of Japan"

...might be a better name. Kinda funny, no? Or you could do:

"World Record Players (on a Tour of Japan)"

OR

"World Record Player (on a Tour of Japan)"

Of course, I would recommend none of these realistically.... Maybe you should just go with:

"Waitin' for a Postcard"

eh, thats more an album name.

Im done now.

On the same theme - anybody else here go crazy when they're looking up recent Wilco clips on YouTube and have to plough through about 300 vidoes of '767 landing at Narita Airport in crosswind', 'Airbus A380 flightdeck Toronto Pearson Itl' and other such nerdom? WTF is that about anyway?

FAIL

Not the worst band name by any means, but I think by this point the OP knows he's made a mistake, he's made a big mistake.... :pirate

Personally if I was copping a Tweedy line for a band name, I'd pick something wittier... e.g. Suburban Gangster Sprawl, Making Love Understandable, The Old Buildings Downtown, Keeping Things Clean, Rumoured To Be, My Mother's Sister's Husband's Brother. Or just an actual song title like Someone Else's Song, Deeper Down, What Light or any number of others. At least something quasi universal that a non-Wilcohead might get also. You might need permission from Tony and the legal people.

I'm going to agree with the majority here. There are better Tweedy-Names you could go after as previous posters have exampled, but if I were you I would pick/create something that's more personal and thus, original. For example, here's a good one if you have a southern-twang-rock-jam thing going: Blue Sky's Rusty Nugget. Or, if you have a dance-guitar funk-sass band: Gary and the Pink Socks. Or, just use your "porn" name...those are always good...mine: Pepper Westridge.
