I'm sure this is just an oversight.....but no-one has mentioned Mick Jagger and David Bowie 'Dancing In The Streets'!!. The video for that one was pretty horible if I recall. However, in terms of good duets, I would say:

Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash: Girl From The North Country (Very Ragged but I love it).

Tom Waits and Bette Midler: I Never Talk To Strangers.

Tom Waits and Keith Richards: That Feel (This one is, as expected, really ragged!).

Sparklehorse and The Flaming Lips: Go (off the Daniel Johnson Tribute Record).

Bjork and Thom Yorke: I've Seen It All (off the Selma Songs Soundtrack)

Also, special mention should be made to: any song that Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald dueted on, especially 'Summertime'.

Anything with Gram and Emmylou, really. But, in particular:

"We'll Sweep Out the Ashes in the Morning"

Oh yeah, and the best ever:

The Pogues (Shane MacGowan) with Kirsty MacColl - "A Fairytale of New York"

Winston is dead on it with that one. And I would definitely say that it counts as a duet; it's a classic example.

Hear hear!

Also, some mentioned before...

Anything with Emmylou! Esp. 'Love Hurts'. Also 'Oh My Sweet Carolina' with Ryan Adams, and the one she did with Bright Eyes but name escapes me. Not sure these count as duets though? Either way, she adds great harmonies!

The Tweedy / Feist one is growing but I still prefer her & Ben Gibbard's duet on Dark Was The Night.

A lot of people confuse "duet" with "harmony". Mozambique isn't really a duet, neither of them have their own lines. Same with the Wilco and Feist song. At least that's how I've always seen it.

Anyways, Johnny Cash and June Carter had some good duets.

I think you're wrong, but whatever.

I love that Gibbard/Feist song. Dark Was the Night is worth the purchase for that song alone.

I'm also a fan of "You and I" despite the fact that it doesn't seem to be all that popular around here. Probably one of my top three songs on (the album). Gotta love Ms. Feist.

Ok... but that doesn't really acknowledge pop-music duets. If it's just two singers singing together in unison then why isn't a Wilco song with a lot of John's backing vocals considered a duet?? A (vocal) duet is when two singers sing back and forth (usually with singing in unison saved for the chorus!!), such as "If I Were A Carpenter". :thumbup

I guess two people of the same sex qualify as a duet because Bowie and Jagger are clearly both female.

I know that somebody already mentioned June Carter and Johnny Cash. But, specifically, I wanna mention:

"Jackson"

Classic.

EDIT:

Johnny Cash and June Carter - Jackson

So yeah, in other words, I'm with stooka on this one.

Emmy Lou Harris is not singing back up on the Mozambique song. she is singing in unison with Bob Dylan. therefore, I consider it a duet.
