RIP Jay Reatard...

Recommended Posts

i know he had his asshole moments in on stage in the past year or so, which consider how many rock stars (big and small) have in the past, seemed kinda insignificant in the grand scheme.

i only saw him one time in 2008 and had a blast at his show. he just made really great pop punk and seemed to have the whole "don't give a fuck" attitude that can be annoying to some, but is often missing in rock music these days.

I actually got to see him in a hole-in-the-wall place here in Fort Wayne. We were so proud to get somebody this big at our little local punk bar - the Brass Rail. I wasn't really into his music, but I wanted to see his show. It was too loud up close, so I sat at the bar and put my earplugs in and THEN I could hear the underlying great pop songs he created. I'm just not into punk. He played fast and frenetic and rocked the room, then suddenly left the stage. Whooosh!

Kinda like his life. :ohwell Damn. RIP Jay.

Yeah, I know him. I was just at his house for a David Bazan living room show last month. Drew takes great shots, but catching a good shot of Jay Reatard's face under all that hair was a tall order. One Lucky Guitar's Matt Kelley did this poster:

so I found out about his death by going to spoontheband.com

I'm pretty sure the last band he played with was spoon, and it's great to see that they recognized it on their homepage. This brings me back to when Jay Bennett passed, and I kinda wished Wilco would have given him more than he actually got. Maybe I missed it, i dunno.

But...Wilco's site gave Jay about as much as Spoon's site gave this Jay, unless I'm remembering wrong.

If you don't subscribe to Carrie Brownstein's Monitor Mix blog, you may have missed this one about Jay Reatard. It includes a short doc about him:
