As bobbob has pointed out, if Obama's hurdle among supporters is that he be better than Palin, many of Obama's supporters are even more cynical than I thought.

Reducing Obama's positions/accomplishments to relative performance as opposed to absolute performance goes against everything he ran on and IMHO does more than anything else to ensure he loses the next election. I dont think record numbers of young voters and independents in 2008 were interested in relative performance. Nor will they be in 2012.

It's a convenient way for Dems to comfort themselves but I think it's a dangerous path to go down. Maybe we should expect more from him. I do.

(eta: If anything, that's not a criticism. That's showing him an awful lot of respect because it acknowledges what one thinks he could do)

I'm getting from him exactly what I expected. His whole campaign was based on lies and deception. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Did you like today's Bloomberg Business Week report where President Obama is quoted, in an interview discussing ways to rein in the soaring federal deficit, as saying "he is "agnostic" about raising taxes on those making less than $250,000"? Watch your wallets!!!

I guess this is a good thing if it marks the end of his class warfare crusade.

LOL...Sarah Palin the only known socialist to be discussed or should I say be invited to given the keynote address at the Tea Party conference. Whilst Governor of Alaska she signed a windfall tax on oil company profits and later went on to use the monies raised to give every Alaska family an energy rebate. (I used to live in Alaska)

This probably should be in the "Dems are spineless" thread, but I didn't want to try searching that one. Anyway, this just in:

Evan Bayh has called a press conference for 2 PM today. He will not seek reelection. :blink

WTF? The guy was running 20 points ahead in early polls, has 13 mil in his war chest, etc.

I'm not a fan of Bayh, but this is perplexing. Crazy shit going on in D.C.

I wonder if the attack dogs will go after Bayh for quitting the same way they went after Palin?

I'm not holding my breath.

Probably not, as he's not quitting in the middle of his first term for no specified reason.

From what I understand, he’s not seeking reelection – meaning, he will finish out his term. Palin, on the other hand, beat a hasty retreat midterm. i.e. simply quit.

If Obama picks him as his running mate in 2008 without vetting him and he then resigns from office amid a host of ethics complaints and then he begins campaigning for the 2012 election as a "Contributor" on MSNBC, maybe.

I mean, these situations aren't comparable. I hate this obsession by those on the right with equating everything on the left with some equivalent on the right, as if Evan fucking Bayh is equivalent to Sarah Palin.

What SR and GON said, too.

Palin quit because of the ludicrous number of frivolous lawsuits being filed against her that were costing the Alaskan taxpayers millions of dollars. Bayh is quitting because it's not going his way. You're right there is no comparison! Palin made a choice based on the best interest of her State and Bayh made a choice based on a lack of intestinal fortitude. imho

Then again maybe there is a scandal brewing...:cheers

In, I don’t know, let’s say baseball, would there be a difference between a player abruptly quitting midseason, and say, finishing out the season, and then retiring?

As for why she quit, I call complete and utter bullshit. Regarding the alleged millions:

Also:

Alaska State Personnel Board list of independent counsel expenses for ethics complaints:

2008-005 0

2008-006 $29,962.00

2008-007, -008 $12,921.44

2008-009 $3,712.00

2009-001 $4,478.66

2009-002 $7,438.50

2009-003 $4,192.00

2009-004 $2,512.00

Total expenditure $296,042.58

300,000 is not really the same "millions of dollars".

She also said this in her speech:

Political operatives descended on Alaska last August, digging for dirt. The ethics law I championed became their weapon of choice.”

All but one of the ethics complaints was filed by Alaskan citizens.

Palin quit Alaska because she's a complete opportunist. She smelt the millions of dollars awaiting the publishing of her book, a spot on TV and lucrative speaking engagements. Again, laughable that the only major politician I know who has actually signed a windfall tax on oil companies and used the revenues to give families energy rebates (i.e.: "socialism in action") is now associated with the Tea Party.

I think it's pretty short-sighted and oversimplified to state that, as we don't have any evidence one way or another to tell us that the whole universe even still exists. :rolleyes

I think maybe half the universe exists.
