Madison 2/20 Webcast

Recommended Posts

Great great show. Can't wait to hear the recordings.

Flew in from Boulder, CO with my son, so we could do the Wisconsin/Madison college tour. He is a music lover who has gone head over heels into Wilco in the past few months. We had 3rd row seats right in front of Nel. View/venue was outstanding, sound that close was so-so (we basically got the Nels monitor mix). No complaints, though. Long show, great song selection (I missed "Side with the Seeds" and he missed "Spiders"), but was really glad to catch the "Broken Arrow." Loved the Tweedy guitar curling and Nels using an egg beater on one of the encores. Hadn't seen a Casino Queen or Nothingsevergonnastandinmyway (again) in years.

Now I have to wait for Aspen. My son loved it and said he's already psyched to see them again. I told him one benefit of attending Wisconsin is he'll get to see Wilco regularly (the campus was nice too).

Welcome BoulderEagle. Tell your son from someone who had the pleasure of going to the UW that he'll love it there. (Good rock climbing and/or hiking at Devil's Lake if he gets homesick for Boulder sometimes as well)

I missed this webcast last night, but it'd be great if it gets posted somewhere....

I got this webcast recording all figured out. What's the next step? How can i distribute it to people without breaking any board rules? Anyone, please PM me if you can give me some pointers.

"Tamala, Rob, Brianne, and Paul--I'm sorry I was a little non-social before and after the show. It was great seeing all of you again and I hope it is a smaller span of time before we see each other next. I hope you can understand that I was a little distracted last night."

Dude, you didn't seem non social to me. I just hope my bumbling didn't break your stride!

Isn't it the best when music touches your heart?

Even when it pounds it into hamburger.

A fresh start with it's own sound track.

Take it easy Matt. Sorry about your break up, and I hope your new start is all you want and need.

The conversation we had after the show makes a little more sense now.

You will get there man!

They're definitely a well-oiled machine, in both a good and bad way.

That's funny, because I was thinking the same thing listening to the webcast (when it wasn't cutting out, including for just about all of the encore). A few of the songs, at least in my mood and hearing, sounded like a band ripping through its greatest hits, ticking them off as they move along.

It may have been the mix, or at least my computer speakers, but the keys seem to have more prominence, and Mikael having more room to work within the songs, and Nels' usual prominence reduced. But as NFL coaches say, "I'll have to see the tape to know for sure."

Just wondering, but where will I be able to find some of these recordings from this show? Will they be up on bt.etree.org? or possibly somewhere else? Just wondering, so I can keep my eyes peeled for them. Thanks again to everyone who took the time and effort to record this amazing show. I was completely floored. I'm going through withdrawls much like I do for Ryan shows.

Keep an eye on this section of the board:

Via Chicago>Greatest Lost Track of All Time

Webcasts/Webstream sourced show have to meet certain criteria in order to be put up at a place such as Dime a Dozen. I don't know if all legit BT sites follow the same rules or not. I would think that they do. The three BT sites you are mostly likely to find Wilco shows at: Dime a Dozen, bt.etree.org, and The Trader's Den.

Regarding digital stream sources

Note: This section pertains to captures of streamed digital audio sources such as satellite broadcasts, webcasts, HD Radio, and the audio portion of digital television dish reception. See elsewhere on this page for policies covering material already captured or circulating as lossy digital files or the audio content of a digital video file or of a video on DVD.

Nearly all digital broadcasts and webcasts carry lossily compressed content. For some examples, broadcasts bearing acronyms such as DVB, DAB, and ADR or carried on networks like Sky Digital and Freeview are lossily compressed digital streams. Despite being lossy, they may be shared on DIME, provided that

1. No higher-bitrate digicast source is known to be at the trading community's disposal;

2. The description on the torrent's page and the internal info file of the torrent state both the compression format and the bit rate of the broadcast stream; and

3. either ..

Preferably, the lossily compressed material is shared in its original compressed format, even if that prevents dividing it into tracks; or

If the stream was transmitted at a bit rate of 192 kb/s or greater (for spoken [but music-related] content, 64 kb/s or greater), it may be shared in a conversion to a lossless compression format.

This provision is a special relaxation of DIME's standard losslessness requirement. If the bit rate and the codec are not stated, or if the torrent's information does not acknowledge its descent from a digital stream, then it does not qualify for this relaxation, and if the material proves lossy, the torrent may be banned for lossiness or lack of information or both.

NOTE ON TOTAL RECORDER AND SIMILAR SOFTWARE: Webstream sources recorded as .wav with this kind of software are NOT allowed, unless the bitrate of the webstream was 192 kb/s or greater, and the bitrate and format of the original source is stated in the torrent's description. Programs like Total Recorder do not record the source in an unchanged form but convert it.

An analog broadcast and a digicast of the same content will, in general, be deemed acceptable alternative sources, and a torrent of each may run on DIME at the same time if there are no other violations in them. If you are posting a torrent derived from an digital broadcast when one from an analog broadcast or an audience capture of the same performance is already on DIME, see the FAQ item on multiple torrents of the same performance and its subsections about alternative versions and the required contrast clause.

Here are links for finding out the stream characteristics of some sources:

* http://www.digiandi.de/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1751&Itemid=140

For DIME policy regarding lossless digital-stream sources, see this item in our FAQ.

Lossless streams

For this subsection to apply, the stream itself must be lossless. Capturing a lossy stream in a dub to 1411.2-kb/s files does not make the files lossless; it just bloats them to the size of lossless files and misrepresents them as such.

The codec and bit rate of the stream must be stated in the torrent description and in the internal info file. If it is uncompressed PCM audio (example: the 1411.2-kb/s stream in WMA lossless from KEXP), you must divide it into tracks and compress it losslessly for the torrent, as explained at DIME's rules for torrents allowed on the tracker.

Overture Center was my favorite Wilco show yet as well. I like the comments regarding the "well-oiled machine" aspect. For me, the impact is a band surging toward the peak of its current evolutionary stage--there's an urgency and a fire in the quest to hone even aspects of the improv into THE most intense possible swell and burst. I am craving the next step as well, because I feel they have nowhere to go but down from the level they're at now.

But who knows? I'm a horrible predictor of what will happen next. Just thrilled to be able to experience the current state of the live show.

One further note: the fact that some people have mentioned how amped the crowd was leads me to believe that Wilco fans are becoming just generally docile. At UIC in October and now in Madison, I've seen the vast majority of people in non-floor seats sitting down through the whole show. Multiple friends of mine got bitched at on Saturday for trying to dance. I go to tons of different kinds of shows, but when it's rock and roll by any stretch, I swear most of the people generally wanna get down, except at Wilco shows.

I'm not trying to start shit; I am genuinely wondering if anybody here has any comments on this. Am I the asshole for doing my lame-ass white-boy shake? And I apologize if this has come up elsewhere. I just know that some friends of mine had a real damper put on their show because they didn't feel comfortable rocking out, and I would've been pissed if I'd been in their shoes as well.

Did anyone else see the "Jersey Boys" around the 5th/6th row right-center that were fist pumping everything? At one point late in the show, one hooligan took his shirt off and started waving it 'round his head like a helicopter...

Oh jeez, yes. I saw that and thought "We're in the Overture Center. The Madison Symphony Orchestra plays here. Now some asshole just took his shirt off and ruined the entire venue forever."

Shoot, I thought I had everything right, but something got messed up on one of the tracks. I have to redo the torrent. The data you downloaded is all good except for track 20. Just delete that one, and once I put up the new torrent, it will check your old data and keep right on going.

Both fair comments. I thought especially on songs like "California Stars" and "Jesus etc" the keyboards had more prominence than previously. And how could the current version of Wilco not be well-oiled especially on the core songs that make the back-bone of the set given how long this version of the band has been around and the number of shows they have done. What was more striking was the perfect rendition of Neil Young's "Broken Arrow. When I saw them in Seattle, I don't think i have heard a better version of "IATTBYH" and loved the way this segued into "One Wing". In Victoria and just slightly less in Seattle, the mix was near perfect. Even though I won't see any of the spring shows, finger-crossed that Wilco will add some more covers to their sets when they will have the chance to play probably 2 1/2 + hours worth of material every night. "Foxhole" by Television came on my I-POD the other day and I could almost hear Nils or Jeff playing the leads and solo's on this song and Glen doing the drum fills.

Lots of seeds on the torrent now.

Jonohull thanks for posting the show, I downloaded the torrent last night - my first time for a torrent (glad it was legal!) :)

I'm curious, was this off the Web cast or off a mic at the show? I'm looking for the Web cast if anyone has that - it really was a wonderful show and I'd like to find the cleanest copy possible.

Again, thanks for your post and generosity (and for motivating me to learn something about bit torrent.)

That was my own recording from the show. I've heard the webcast was spotty for everyone, so I don't know if a full copy is out there. The member cdrews here recorded at the show too, and he had a better location than me, so his will probably sound a little better.

Oh, never fear. The members of Wilco may become honorary citizens here yet.

City Council may declare Wilco members honorary citizens of Madison

Way to cave, Madison! ;) We'll see if this goes anywhere. The resolution is pretty funny, actually. I liked this:

WHEREAS, The Isthmus called Wilco 'America's shiniest rock object'; and,

People have been PMing me for my copy of the webcast. Everything after Bull Black Nova sounds perfect. All split up into different tracks and stuff. Please do if you want it, that goes for everyone.
