for all the massive love gushed towards the Beach House record, is it that much better than the 1st one or Devotion?

Yup, the Soft Pack record came out in february according to Allmusic. And, yes, I feel that the Beach House record is far better than their previous two.

edit, pt. II: OK, so I finally listened to the Justin Townes Earle album. That would slot in about #6 for me. Great record!

 

Lots of other good stuff came out this year, most (or all) of which has already been mentioned in this thread, but the ten above are my favorites.
