Jeff Tweedy 4/16/11 The Vic

Recommended Posts

Another great show, with a much more varied set list than last night. Started a bit late, so no banter for the first 4 songs. Can't remember whole set list but some highlights were What Light, Ripple, So Much Wine, Screen Door, Monday, One Wing, Sunken Treasure, Acuff-Rose (on a National guitar), among others. Nice to see our Wilco family tonight. Travel safe all!

Just got back from the show. It was my first solo show and it was fantastic. Unfortunately we were sitting right in front of probably the biggest asshole in the theatre who screamed during and after every song and spilled beer on me and my friends. It didn't ruin the show, but it definitely put a damper on the evening.

It was a great show! I just uploaded the recording I did to the computer. The recording didn't turn out too bad at all. I will work on it the next few days. I know at least two other people recorded the show. I know Tagvestibule taped as well. So, keep your eyes open for some recordings coming soon. Looking forward to some reviews.

Eh, what the hell I'm bored, here are some highlights from me.

-A guy requested Pick Up the Change, so Jeff serenaded him, staring at him and singing it to him.

-He mentioned how he failed creative writing in school, and someone brought up Einstein failing math, so he wanted more examples of people who failed and became revolutionary or something. For some reason someone yelled Charlie Sheen, and without missing a beat, Jeff said how Charlie Sheen failed a drug test, and it turns out, he's great at taking drugs haha.

-He re-told the story of the mayors daughter

Once again, as he has done on each of his two-night stands in the same city recently, Jeff didn't repeat a single song from the previous night (unless you count "The Community Song.") So by my count, that was 60 different songs played over the two nights. :thumbup

These shows might be on the pricier side, in terms of the price of admission, but I would bet that not too many people who attended either or both nights walked away feeling like they didn't get their money's worth.

Here was the complete setlist, as played, for Night 2:

I got your setlist right here...

Awwwww.... :wub Wouldn't it be cool if it was that guy's first Tweedy show? :pirate

Yeah that'd be pretty awesome haha. Jeff also said later about that song that you can't fake that kind of emotion.

After sleeping on it, i'm still pissed that we happened to be right in front of the biggest douchebags in the room. Seriously, these guys aside from screaming during and after songs yelled out random shit.

This isn't word for word, but this is what happened at one point.

Jeff talking before a song.

Douchebag 1: CHELSEA JAGER!!!!

Jeff: Chelsea what? what's he talking about?

Douchebag 1: YEEEEEEEEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

random guy in crowd: it's the blackhawks song.

Jeff: The blackhawks song is called Chelsea Jager? Wait. how did we end up here?

Douchebag 2, to Douchebag 1: dude, jeff tweedy just chewed you a new asshole

unfortunately the continued to talk through songs and drunkenly tried to sing along. It was no surprise that when the lights came on at the end of the show, there were probably 15 beer cans on the floor where those guys were sitting.

It sucks, that that's what I'm thinking about when I'm thinking of the show right now, but it was hard to ignore

Hahaha. Sure would!

These shows always make for one of my favorite music weekends of the year, and this year was no exception. Great stuff all around.

By the way, did any women sing along to "Ripple?" It sounded like the all-dude chorus.

You're right, they are typically seen as pricey shows. However, if you get the $50 tickets, they really are a bargain. Varied setlists, no opener, great banter...and it's a benefit. This was my first time missing these shows in a few years, and I plan to make whatever arrangements necessary to make it back next year. They really are amazing shows, and missing them was sad.

"random guy in crowd" here... that was a strange moment, and clearly Jeff is not into hockey enough to get the reference. I think the D-bag near you was going for a repeat of the "Single Ladies" vibe from last year with disasterous results...I sang a bit for him and he looked like he swallowed a furball. After the exchange above I said to him , I think a hockey game just broke out and he gave me a funny look and launched into his next tune... overall, except for a few douches, i thought the crowd was pretty great. And the guy Jeff sang dir3ectly to, in the front row, is a long time Wilco fan. Later in teh show Jeff said that wherever they go, there Paul is. "If we got off the plane in Kuwait it would be like "Hi Paul. oing to Iceland tomorrow?" Paul: "Yup"

"What Light" was really well received and I have always loved the tune. Jeff was kind of surprised how well it was received (lots of singing along). What's the consensus out there on the song? I'd love to hear it performed more often...

Haha, that's pretty funny. I'm not familiar with the "single ladies" thing though.

And that's very cool for Paul! The crowd did seem great, it was just that the guys were so close to us, but it's all good, it was my first time seeing him solo, so it was pretty amazing for me.

The song was trashed pretty hard here for a couple years right when it came out. It was fun to hear it Saturday. There isn't much to the song in my opinion - there are at least 50 better Wilco songs I play before this one. I still like it though.

Great show haven't been on here in years. Song selections were great as was Jeff's playing considering many of the songs he played, are rarely played. Saw lots of people video taping but kind of felt bad for whomever Jeff called out after Ripple- ouch. Since when has this been the protocol? I've seen tapers, cell phone tapers at every show but I've never seen Jeff call one person out like that...

Is that right? Must have been awesome.

I totally missed these shows because I haven't been on VC lately. Kicking myself.

Yeah, the reason I put the ">" there was because he transitioned right into Spiders without stopping. It was a nice little segue, which I'm not sure I've seen before. Pretty cool. :thumbup

Also, on the subject of rare songs...it wasn't the main reason I requested "A Long Time Ago" (my primary request, by the way, though I suppose "Pick Up The Change" will be the more memorable one from this show), but he's only played "A Long Time Ago" a couple of times, I think. Wilcobase says once, back at Martyr's in '03, but I'm almost sure someone else requested it at one of these Vic benefit shows a couple of years back.

I think the version from Martyrs is quite different?? "I was there", but it was "A Long Time Ago".
