I think I understand where this guy is coming from. I once had someone throw something at my car while driving so I never drove again.

And, I also hate to fight. So much so that I'm willing to do it for certain reasons that in the end are trivial. Not only do I hate to fight, but I'm paradoxically really good at it. Go figure.

The only time I will ever stand during a Wilco show is when I'll Fight is playing.

Is that because it's easier to walk out of the theater than crawl?

This again? And five pages' worth? :lol

I've been in the middle of this debate before, and have been at some shows where it was an issue (classic Tweedy quote: "Now that we've got you on your feet, we're going to put you back in your seats again." Something like that.)

I completely agree with High Heat's comment that it's the band's job to get people on their feet. One of the most contentious theatre shows I have attended - where people were up and down, pockets of people were up, some never up - opened with Muzzle of Bees. Come on, Muzzle of Bees? It's an okay song, but doesn't inspire people to jump up and stand and stay standing...especially if they are new to the band.

If they really want people to get up and stay up, they should start their shows with several up-tempo numbers, and never put in a super slow song until at least half way through the set. That's my dos pesos.

I think this argument boils down to the success of Wilco. When they first formed they played bars and small clubs were there was no choice but to stand and rock out. Now some 17 years later they are a fairly successful band playing large venues that are generally seated. Hell the last time they played Madison they played Overture Hall. This is an extremely nice venue and generally does not do Rock shows. In fact this month they are doing an Opera, Les Mis, and a bunch of other sit down stuff. The venues they play are not conducive to standing and rocking out.

I like Wilco. Wilco is better than "Cats". I'm going to see Wilco again and again.

i'd say that by most definitions, even loose ones, that Wilco are a *very* successful band.

well they ain't selling out 40 city stadium tours. That is very successful, but you understand my point.

Thank god! They would have to take a serious downfall in the quality of their music to obtain that amount of commercial success. ;)

i've seen wilco a dozen times. never once have I watched seated. i have seen tweedy solo a couple times and was seated.

the only "rock" show i've stayed seated for was elvis costello.

elvis and wilco have a similar demographic following them (meaning going to shows), right? and, comparing the two, wilco def "rocks out." someone mentioned muzzle of bees not being a very inspiring song. couldn't disagree more...that song would get me up on my feet. true, i am not new to the band but still, I think that would get folk up.

Since they are close, I propose that Jeff call up President Obama and have him direct us when it comes to standing and sitting during shows. Obviously, he'll have us sit when Country Disappeared plays but we'll all stand for I'll Fight. This is the most diplomatic resolution I can come up with. Wilco shows are a little too socialistic now and we all know that ideology does not work, just read the 5 pages in this thread...

I'm sorry but maybe if you are willing to give up belief in a band based on the actions of a few then you weren't meant to enjoy the band in the first place - stay home and listen to your vinyl dude!

Huge props for the Dr Feelgood clip Mr Howdjadoo. The very embodiment of R & R spirit (did you see 'Rock & Roll Confidential'? Best rockumentary ever!).

It is indeed a great film, but it's called Oil City Confidential. I'd urge everyone to see it if they can. Wilko Johnson is an absolute revelation and one of the greatest rhythm guitarists ever.
