Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Recommended Posts

Not much talk of Nick Cave round these parts.

The next round of his re-issue campaign have just been released. This includes: Let Love In, Murder Ballads, Boatman's Call and No More Shall We Part. These four records are of a ridiculously high standard and should be in everyone's record collection. Each set comes with a DVD featuring video's and part of a documentary. I have the 'No More Shall We Part' one and it is very good. The opening track 'As I Sat Sadly' is a work of genius.

In terms of status he does seem to be an undervalued artist. The quality of his output is consistantly high.

As I Sat Sadly By Her Side Lyrical perfection.

As I sat sadly by her side

At the window, through the glass

She stroked a kitten in her lap

And we watched the world as it fell past

Softly she spoke these words to me

And with brand new eyes, open wide

We pressed our faces to the glass

As I sat sadly by her side

She said, "Father, mother, sister, brother,

Uncle, aunt, nephew, niece,

Soldier, sailor, physician, labourer,

Actor, scientist, mechanic, priest

Earth and moon and sun and stars

Planets and comets with tails blazing

All are there forever falling

Falling lovely and amazing"

Then she smiled and turned to me

And waited for me to reply

Her hair was falling down her shoulders

As I sat sadly by her side

As I sat sadly by her side

The kitten she did gently pass

Over to me and again we pressed

Our different faces to the glass

"That may be very well", I said

"But watch the one falling in the street

See him gesture to his neighbours

See him trampled beneath their feet

All outward motion connects to nothing

For each is concerned with their immediate need

Witness the man reaching up from the gutter

See the other one stumbling on who can not see"

With trembling hand I turned toward her

And pushed the hair out of her eyes

The kitten jumped back to her lap

As I sat sadly by her side

Then she drew the curtains down

And said, "When will you ever learn

That what happens there beyond the glass

Is simply none of your concern?

God has given you but one heart

You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers

And God does not care for your benevolence

Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others

Nor does he care for you to sit

At windows in judgement of the world He created

While sorrows pile up around you

Ugly, useless and over-inflated"

At which she turned her head away

Great tears leaping from her eyes

I could not wipe the smile from my face

As I sat sadly by her side

Awesome thread! I was driving home from work a week ago and was forced to listen to the radio as I had left my iPod at home. Somehow I came across this obscure station I was unfamiliar with which was playing this amazing song. I was convinced it was some sort of Christian station based on the lyrics. They played like 3 of his songs back to back. I made a mental note of some of the lyrics so I could do a Google search when I got home. I was surprised to find out it was Nick Cave that I had been listening to. Needless to say, I downloaded The Boatman's Call the other day and will be sure to pick up the reissue ASAP. The guy's amazing. Thanks for the heads-up :thumbup

Agreed, he is one the greats. His discography remains consistently great--and have you heard the Grinderman records?!

my favs, in no order:

boatman's call

lyre of orpheus/abbitious (sp)blues

let love in

mercy seat

I have the first Grinderman record but haven't got around to the second one yet. Don't know why but 'Lyre of Orpheus' never really worked for me. Maybe it should have been edited down to a single disc set which would have improved it. In terms of favourites I would have to say:

1) The Good Son;

2) And No More Shall We Part;

3) Let Love In.

Just saw that Nick & Bad Seeds are putting out a new album in February. Also touring in March/April. I've never seen NC with or without the B.S.

Do they put on a good show?

I was surprised to see that tickets are either $90 or $45 when they play Chicago (even though they have a great opening act in Sharon Van Etten).

He has a new record out in February. There is a track from it streaming now, via pitchfork. Pretty nice tune. I liked the Grinderman work as well as 'Dig Lazuarus Dig'. Looking forward to this in the new year. For those with more disposable income than myself there is the obligatory super deluxe edition of the new album to pre-order.

And tour dates including a stop in Colorado!  Sweet!

am I the only one who can see my post above from earlier today? Just kidding. Glad to see some other fans out there. Would love to get other people's take on whether he is worth $90.

MTV in the mid nineties airing the Wild Roses video was my introduction to Nick Cave. When Murder Ballads when out of print I treasured my old copy which I acquired in 1996, then it was re-released in 2011 along with a DVD, I have yet to purchase this CD, although I've heard some reviewers say that the sound quality is actually awful and a victim of loudness. Curse of Millhaven is one of the songs I most remember from that album, it's really dark and sinister, but that's how much of Nick Cave's music is.

I was a big Nick Cave fan back in the day though I rarely listen to his work these days. I do, however, quite like the sound of the first song from the new record. I'll probably fork out the $ when he comes to Sydney. It's been some years since I've seen the Bad Seeds.

I ended up forking over $45/ticket (third pricing tier - tiers were 75/60/45/30 before fees) to see the show from the Chicago Theater in the balcony. I'm excited. Sharon Van Etten will be an excellent opening act I think. Now, just need to wait 5 months for the show.

Balcony seating at the Chicago Theater isn't bad at all (which I am sure you already know) - probably my favorite downtown place to see a show - especially for balcony seating.

That's where I saw him. It was great.

Hopefully there will be a tour. Nick is such a phenomenal performer. Have been lucky to see him several times. He seems to like Seattle. Sadly, I think this record is most likely going to be pretty dark with the death of his son. I can't even imagine. Hopefully it will help him & give him some peace.
