Help with summerteeth

Recommended Posts

I have the basic chord profession down and was just wondering how to do all the cool tricks that Jeff does in the sunken treasure DVD. Here is a good video (

) of some guy doing them but I still cant figure it out. Any and all help would be awesome!

andrew,

I'm not sure which parts are giving you trouble, and can't read your whole post, part of which is obscured by the video, but feel free to PM me if there's something specific you need help with. I have a drunken silly video of me doing this song too if it'll help, but I'm sure as hell not posting it here.

cheers,

Neil

Are your referring to the little descending bass runs? They are (kinda) explained here:

Summerteeth - Wilco
Intro . . . . E . . . C#m . . . F# . . . | . A .
[E] Like a cloud his
[G#]fingers explode on the
[A]typewriter ribbon the
[F#]shadow grows
[E] His heart's in a
[C#m]bowl behind the
[F#]bank
[F#] [A]
[E]And every evening when
[G#]he gets home
[A]To make his supper and
[F#]eat it alone
[E] His black shirt
[b]cries while his shoes get
[F#m]cold [Faug] [A/E] It just a [F#m6/D#] dream he keeps
Here’ one way to play the descending lick (with F#m Faug A/E F#m6/D#)

G--2--|---2--|--2--|----2----|
D--4--|---3--|--2--|----1----|

Appegiate it for extra fun!
[E]having [C#m]
[F#m] And it [b]doesn't seem to mean anything
[E] [C#m]
[F#m] And it [b]doesn't seem to mean any [E]thing
[E] One summer a
[G#]suicide
[A] Another autumn a
[F#]traveler's guide
[E] He hits snooze
[C#m]twice before he
[F#]dies
[F#] [A]
[E]And every evening when
[G#]he gets home
[A] To make his supper and
[F#]eat it alone
[E] His black shirt
[b]cries while his shoes get
[F#m]cold [Faug] [A/E] It just a [F#m6/D#] dream he keeps
[E]having [C#m]

[F#m]having [b]

Hey, I remember when I used to like Wilco songs!

Without listening to it too much, here's something that sounds a lot like his lick in the intro (between the B and C#m chords -- did he skip one?):

...1.....+.....2.....+.....3.....+.....4.....+......

e--------------------------------------------4------|

B--------------------------------------------5------|

G--4----/6----/8-----11----------8-----------6------|

D--------------------------------------------6------|

A--2----/4----/6-----9-----------6-----------4------|

E---------------------------------------------------|

That descending thing he plays somewhat like this (which is slightly different than the chords in the tab above, which I might have done also):

| F#m | F#m(maj7) | F#m7 | B7 |

e--2--|----2------|--2---|--2--|

B--2--|----2------|--2---|--4--|

G--2--|----2------|--2---|--2--|

D--4--|----3------|--2---|--4--|

A--4--|----4------|--4---|--2--|

E--2--|----2------|--2---|-----|

He also does a descending bass line during the B in the chorus:

|. B .| B/A | F#m7 | B/F# |

e--2--|-----|------|-------|

B--4--|--4--|--4---|---4---|

G--4--|--4--|--4---|---4---|

D--4--|--4--|--4---|---4---|

A--2--|--0--|--x---|---x---|

E-----|-----|--4---|---2---|

Okay; I need to go to bed.

Cheers,

Gin
