Upon first listen I'll take a stab and say One Sunday Morning is easily the best closer on any of their records.

Also there is a huge Nick Drake influence over a lot of the songs I think, especially Rising Red Lung and OSM.

you're definitely right about Nick Drake. I feel like he's been a big influence on a lot of songs in the past (Muzzle of Bees, etc.), but his influence is especially apparent on this record...in a good way.

First four songs are ace! I'm really happy that it doesn't feel phoned-in like the last couple records. Also, is it just me or is Dawned On Me gonna get them sued? I still haven't figured out what it sounds exactly like, but it's definitely giving me a Fight Test/Cat Stevens vibe. Powerfully so.

They did it! Ladies and gentlemen it is a fantastic day to be a Wilco fan. Here is my reaction, as hyperbolic and premature as it may be:

The Whole Love is the best record these guys have made in 6-7 years. Every song stands up, they all transcend their respective genres, they all go beyond the other Wilco albums you could compare them to. More than anything this LP is incredible because it creates its own world the way BT, AGIB, YHF and ST did, the way SBS partially did, and the way W(TA) failed to.

The acoustic based songs don't sound like a Tweedy solo track with overdubs added later. They sound like perfect jigsaw puzzle arrangements written with a top shelf six piece band taking complete ownership of every second. The high energy songs don't sound like "easy rockers" put in "for fun", but substantial additions to an already formidable catalog.

I enjoyed the last record as a new album from one of my favorite bands that fell between serviceable and great at various moments. I've already fallen in love with the Whole Love as an incredible record. No qualifiers needed.

can't figure out why people aren't digging capitol city. i love it.

I dig it, it's just an... interesting song for Wilco. My sister really likes it, enough to tell me about it on the telephone "Got me on the first line!". We're a Wilco family...

Art Of Almost = Holy Sheeeeeeet! I haven't been that excited since .....

I Might definitely sounds like a different mix.

Sunloathe is very nice. Definitely very Beatles, Beach Boys and late 90s/early 00s R.E.M (Parakeet, At My Most Beautiful etc).

Dawned On Me sounds so good. There really is so much going on in each song. Love the backing vocals and phrasing a la Madonna's Like A Virgin. LOL

Black Moon is quite gorgeous. Really enjoy the orchestral arrangement that comes in late.

Born Alone sounds great. Love the outro. Great lyrics.

Open Mind is another beauty. Love the musical arrangements. Interesting how this turned out after playing the "Strombo" version for awhile.

Capitol City is a fave of mine. I loved the surprise of where the song was going. Like was said very Broken Arrow.

Standing O - Is it just me or is anyone else reminded of Elton John's Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting. I hear elements of it throughout the song, but mostly in the intro. Otherwise very 80s New Wave. Bit Elvis Costello. Excellent keys. Nice handclaps. A bit better here than at Solid Sound.

Rising Red Lung is nice, but I need to listen to it once more to really remember it. It's lost in my memory amongst the slower tracks on here. Maybe it's due to not having the title sung in the song. Maybe it was, but I never heard it.

Whole Love is fucking sweet. Love the Prince falsetto. "I won't ever fuck it up!" is awesome in falsetto. Once again nice arrangement going on here.

One Sunday Morning obviously has a lot going on in it. Lots of instruments bleeding in and out. Love Jeff's low voice on it. Edit: Just finished it and that didn't feel like 12 minutes. Going to need a lot of listens to really absorb everything on this one and in the "whole" album.

The only thing that leaves me sad is that we might not get PMs of it. I really want to drive around and listen to this. Maybe it already is?

Big smile on my face the whole way through. Amazing!!

Certainly not in terms of backstory or anything but in terms of sounds, songs, and overall feel it's a lot like Abbey Road to me. Sort of in the same way that AGIB has been compared to the White Album a lot in terms of sounds etc.
