9. Standing O - 6/10

10. Red Rising Lung - 2/10

11. Whole Love - 6/10

12. One Sunday Morning - 5/10

Great start. Somewhat weak middle. Weaker second half, saved to some degree at the very end.

Very similar to the last two in the way it's front loaded, weak in the middle to second half and picks up a bit at the end. Everlasting Everything is a better closer to me than OSM.

It's not close to YHF or AGIB in my opinion. Hard to place it right now relative to the two that proceeded it, but they're all in the same vicinity, with WTA bringing up the rear.

Which is 96/120, by my reckoning thats an 8 out of 10 which is just about right for now.

Sunloathe, Dawned on Me, Born Alone, Rising Red Lung and Whole Love have the potential to rise by another notch after more extensive listening so it could rise to an 8.5 in time. Tracks 7,8 and 9 definitely have a feel of middle album dip about them and are no doubt strategically placed there. They aren't bad by any means, they're just, well, nice songs really!

Grading each individual track of a Wilco record is akin to grading the chapters of your favorite novel.

This is a work that is best considered and consumed as a whole.

I've always said the two most important songs on an album are the opener and closer: start it off strong and leave me wanting more at the end. This album does that with a couple of 10s. Unlike most artist that seem to tack on/close with the slowest or unnecessary last song, Wilco seems to understand the importance of sequencing as such. My ratings:

1. Art of Almost - 10/10

2. I Might - 9/10

3. Sunloathe - 3/10

4. Dawned on Me - 8/10

5. Black Moon - 7/10

Overall id give the album a high 8 if I was being over critical, but it is so rare that an album has nothing but solid songs from start to finish. It's definitely there most consistently good record since Yankee. Its not as interesting as Ghost, but I think it's a more enjoyable record overall.

Forgot the tally: Overall, TWL comes in at an 8-8.5/10 for me, which makes it one of my favs. It's definitely right in there with what I consider Wilco classics--BT, YHF, and AGIB. An outstanding offering, without doubt. Thank you, Wilco, for again proving why I look for solace in rock music.

Let's put it this way, I have a Best of Wilco playlist on my iPod and I've added I Might, Dawned On Me, Born Alone, Capitol City, Standing O and Whole Love to it from the original album tracking. I have also added I Love My Label and Sometimes It Happens. That's about 30 minutes of new Wilco music added to the soundtrack of my life. The rest have been assigned to iPod oblivion. I was undecided about adding Art of Almost but just like Bull Black Nova I would only end up skipping it when it's turn in the rotation came up. The rest will be listened too occasionally when I put the CD on in the car.

I am definitely in the minority on open mind. Takes me a while to absorb a whole wilco album. First song I latched on to was Open Mind. Usually, this is the death knell for a song. I learn to love others and dislike my first love. Not in this case. Just a beautiful song. That is why I love this board. So many varied opinions it gets me to listen to other stuff closer and my own choices more critically.

It's way too early for me to know how I feel about all of the tracks. But I feel confident in a 10/10 for Art of Almost, I Might and Whole Love.

I think Whole Love is absolute golden goodness.

I agree. Absolutely love that song.

Can't get into Open Mind that much. It makes for good background music.
