Wilco — 12/15/11, Chicago, IL (Vic Theatre)

Recommended Posts

That was one helluva a show last night. My last one (unless Santa comes early) in Chicago for a while. I can't pick a favorite night since all 3 shows were great. As an old dude, and a long time Wilco fan, last night was the first time that I felt like an old dude at the show. Sad to say it but the crowd around me seemed very uptight and were not into the older tunes, a first for me. I guess I just woke up feeling old....

Enjoy the next two you lucky club goers...

but you failed to mention if it was a hoT roadie!

Oh man, how it WISH it was a hotT (isn't that how it was?) roadie... :lol

I think one of those guys has a little too much responsibility (er, pride?) these days to be prancing around with a cowbell, but I'm certainly glad that Josh is around to pick up the slack! :thumbup

I'm obviously in the minority here, but I didn't think it was the best of shows. The rarities of the songs in the setlist were nice to be sure. But the show had a lot of walls, namely the huge momentum shift with Wilco the song and Capitol City. And up until Casino Queen, I thought the first encore was one of the weakest encores I've seen in a long time (but that's just based on personal distaste for Hate it Here and You Never Know).

Overall, I'd give it a nice Pitchfork 6.6 out of 10.

This is why it might be nice if they'd mix things up more often; it's hard to keep up a nice flow to the show when you're wedging in songs you hardly ever play.

*note: just throwing ideas out, not complaining; I am grateful for every chance I get to see this band.

Man, the setlist just kept delivering last night! And Kicking Television! :wub "I'm serious...Stop buying things!" I'm not sure how I feel about Dreamer being dropped for Hoodoo--even with the writhing Wranglers on stage. Hoodoo is fun, but Dreamer?! *faints* Fingers crossed for Fri or Sunday! And we should probably give Glenn a break, even if he doesn't like Hotel Arizona. He came into the picture when Jeff was writing things like "My mind is filled with silvery stars" and "All my lies are only wishes/I know I would die if I could come back new." And then he hears, "Hotel in Arizona, made us all want to feel like stars." I'm with Glenn on this one.

One other thing that stood out for me was Jeff's solo during ALTWYS. It's one of the most interesting solos that he's kept, and it's so expressive. I actually hear the guitar telling it's own story. I love that.

Also, kudos to the Vic for the incredibly organized entry process. It helped that it was all Etix vs. a presale/paper list, but that was the most organized and efficient entrance so far.

Sadly, my two day run ended last night as well. Hate it Here isn't my favorite and neither is Hotel Arizona but the show was pretty damn good.

A quick note: Magazine is my wife's favorite Wilco song. The melody just seems to put a smile on her face and can always bring her out of a bad mood. So, I requested the song and they ended up playing it. Now, Im not so naive to think they REALLY played it b/c I requested it, but I'm gonna believe it anyway.

Did anyone else request it?

People can say all they want about setlist predictability but last night was so much more than that. That being said, the setlist was anything but predictable. While the song selection was nothing short of amazing, it was more about how they played what they played. From tweedys first line in sunday morning it was clearly evident he was in a zone. The crowds energy was intense and the band fed off that. It was the perfect storm.

From hesitating beauty and beyond...it was rock and roll at its finest. I've seen them a bunch including the winter residency in 2008, Ryman this tour, Lupos in 2010...and this was by far the best of them all. Not even close.

There was magic in the air all night and the only downside to the entire show was when the walked off stage for good.

I'm loving that they played You Never Know (love that rockin' piano!) and Say You Miss Me (full of great pop hooks). I was hoping to hear those in January, now it seems at least in the realm of the possible.

Night #3. Another impressive setlist. Looks like they slipped up and played a non TWL song twice. I wonder if they realized they were doing that? I love the daringness of these setlists. What is probably most impressive is how well they are pulling it off. The band knows these songs really well.

The Vic remains my favorite venue in Chicago. It is so far superior to the Riv and hosts great bands. Wilco has great history there and I’m glad they played Kicking TV last night. Being at those four shows in 2005 was a treat and the reminder last night was fun. I thought the crowd was good. A lot of people seemed to get and know the hand clap sections. We were just to the right of the 6’ 4” gentlemen standing section.

Highlights: Say You Miss Me, Hotel Arizona (Nels Cline nailed it!), Kicking Television, Lonely 1 and “holy cow” bell Hoodoo Voodoo

It will be interesting to see if they hold up with the no repeats – if so we are in for a lot of old material these next two shows. AGIB and YHF are pretty cashed out. Of course, WTA is not.

Amazing show, amazing setlist. The band was clearly having a ton of fun last night.

My only complaint is with the noise levels near the back of the floor. There were some loud drunks (at a Wilco show, can you believe it???) and they were pretty damned annoying during the quieter songs. Eventually they stumbled out towards the floor and became someone else's annoyance.

We had a great view of the box where Rahm was sitting and it was fun to see him bopping his head along with the music.

Night 2 out of 2 for me, as I have matured and only "needed" to see two of these shows, though if I would have known all the deeper tracks planned, well I would have found 5 babysitters. 6 if you include the Andrew Bird sound experience at the MCA next Wednesday.

I stopped trying to guess last night. Smart move as even Handshake got cut. Hotel Arizona is a rare pre SBS song which gives Nels a real chance to let loose. Sometimes it feels as if this current lineup has less to do on some old tunes, but Hotel and Casino Queen utilized the full sound. Some older tracks do not need the full sound as Summerteeth and Say You Miss Me were perfect with a bit of restraint.

The biggest upset of the two shows I attended was AGIB 10 YHF 3. Yankee was -2.5 coming in. I love an underdog, and this was no exception. Getting to hear nearly all of Ghost in the 2 nights was a pleasure. I hope you all get Company and Wishful Thinking at the club shows, because let's face it, AGIB deserves to played in full. In particular, Theologians and At Least That's What You Said. Who doesn't love screaming "I'm a Cherry Ghost"?

I did allow myself one guess before the show, and like many of you had that Kicking Television / Vic connection in mind. A rare treat.

I wish I did not know Dreamer was audibled out of. Because if anything bad could be said, the 2nd encore was weak, especially if "hot shirtless roadie's on cowbell" did not titillate.

There is a reason we all love this band so much. Even when we (OK I) complain when 19 out of 23 songs are predictable as hell, they come back with a surprising run. What other band treats their fans to a residency, night with tour, and a 5 night stand with shrinking venue sizes? I would say these two nights were a rebirth of how much I personally love Wilco, but I realized I never fell out of love, just took them a little for granted.

NEVER AGAIN!!!

awesome show as everyone has noted. Highlights for me included Hell is Chrome, Radio Cure (!), ALTWYS, Say You Miss Me, Summerteeth, Magazine Called Sunset and Kicking Television. Really high energy show, even Jeff noted after Magazine Called Sunset "that was fast".

One question I had though was what was up with the poster? I was expecting it to keep with the theme of the exterior of the venue, but instead we get a picture of what looks to be a statue of a woman's face. I'm assuming it has something to do with the details in the Vic, but i've never noticed it before. May be a moot point since it's not yet for sale on the Kung Fu store, but I was kind of disappointed.

I was wondering the same thing. I found this picture on Flickr but it doesn't seem to match what was on the poster. I only caught a glimpse of it from someone next to me, but I thought it had more flowing hair around the face. Vic is short for Victoria, so maybe there's some other painting or sculpture in the Vic that it matches.

If you're referring to my comment, it was a reference to another thread where someone suggests Wilco is in need of rejuvenation...and was a joke.

Definitely a lot of setlist treats last night. Loved Hesitating Beauty. Hell is Chrome was awesome. Great to hear Summerteeth.

Overall I enjoyed Riviera more. Bull Black Nova, Spiders, Always In Love, I'm a Wheel, and many others just made the show that much more intense and fun for me. Just some personal preferences. I've never felt so happy about a Wilco show than after the Riv.

Hoping to get in tonight at Metro... if not, 3 shows was a great run.

Within the hour they released tix for tonight online...they went fast. Was just at box office...that's it. No more.

I just tried about 15 minutes ago and I failed the captcha 4 times, even though I wrote the right letters each time. Same thing happen to me when the Metro tickets went on sale the first time.
