Jeff Tweedy solo album?

Recommended Posts

As much as I love Tweedy's solo shows, and I do love them, I'm looking for more Wilco music and Wilco tour.  The concept that there won't be either until 2015 saddens me.  As does of course the news about Sue (and the silence since her initial post).  Which makes me wonder how much we'll see of Tweedy or Wilco in the coming months.

Which, in the grand scheme of things, is what's most important. If Sue getting better and getting the support she needs from Jeff means no Jeff solo record or Wilco activity, that's fine by me. They have given us a lot of music to enjoy. I've got a lot to sustain me and I look forward to new stuff coming out whenever the time is right for them.

124 days since the last Wilco show. That number seems destined to stretch until at least June which would put the break at 230 days. Their longest break ever between shows was 226 days (Sept '10 - May '11) leading up to The Whole Love. I miss Wilco live shows...

What the hell is going on here? Open Mind is a gorgeous song with vivid lyrics that tickle my senses. A wonderful love song. Some of you have last your minds! Damn I love that song.

It's also a bit boring, lets face it.

Has this actually been confirmed somewhere or is this just speculation based on solo projects?

From the first post here: "Hey guys, I understand some of you may be skeptical because I have no real proof to offer, but I have some interesting information I've been wanting to share for a few weeks and this seems like the best place to do so.

Last month, my brother and I attended a Nels Cline concert in NYC as part of the New York Alternative Guitar Festival at a small venue in downtown Manhattan. We arrived a little early for the show, and to my surprise, standing at the bar was one Nels Cline. I had met Nels once before at Solid Sound in 2012, so I already knew what a gracious and easy person he is to talk to and felt comfortable enough to ask...

"CAN WE GET A NEW WILCO ALBUM THIS YEAR?"

The answer, sadly, was "no", but he did say that Jeff is writing and that the band would be starting rehearsals for the new album soon, so it looks like 2015 is a much more realistic expectation.

HOWEVER, he also told me that Jeff Tweedy is releasing a solo album featuring his son Spencer THIS YEAR!

I was obviously very grateful that he shared this with me, so I didn't push for more details, but I thought my fellow Wilco enthusiasts would be excited to hear this.

Take me at my word or not, but if you read an announcement about the album soon, remember, you heard it here first!"

Well.... I peek at Wilcoworld every few weeks, even when it doesn't seem like anything's going on.  Often they've had their homepage photo from a recording session, long before there is any press about them being in album process.  I was curious recently when I saw a small drum kit mic'ed up with a million guitars around it.  I thought "There's no way that's Glenn's kit."  It reminded me of the minimal kit that Spencer played on the Mavis record.  It made me wonder if Spencer was recording more at the Loft.  I guess there's your answer.

Wilco has kept up a frantic touring schedule for the last several years. actually most of its career.  Few bands as old as Wilco do that.  The fact that after 20 years Jeff is slowing down is not a bad thing really.  A nice solo album will be great.  Look at all the shows that we can see with individual band members.

I haven't been following the solo tour thread, so apologies if it's being covered there.

Ok, good news.

Immediate questions:

Is this a break from Wilco or the, ummm, next thing?

There have been rumours of a Loose Fur record this year too.  What's the status of that?

I have to say i wasn't expecting this...

I'd be worried but for the fact Wilco's announced for Lockn' in September. So I take comfort that there will be Wilco in '14. all the members are taking lots of time to do their own things, glad to see that Tweedy will be releasing new music. It's the son in the band thing that weirds me out a little. Phil Lesh has done the same, I've never heard of anyone raving about that configuration of his band. Bottom line is new Tweedy songs should be a good thing.

If Tweedy Jnr is at college, will touring be restricted to coincide with the summer break? Early June seems a bit too soon for that compared to the UK so I hope he's not dropping out :badger

I suppose it's too much to hope for a late summer visit to Europe? - but not the last week of August please.

Anyone know anything about the history of the other guys named in the band?

poked around a bit on the internet yesterday about the guitarist.  I think he's a Brit relocated to Chicago, plays with a band called the Zincs. They're on Thrill Jockey.  Janet Bean (Freakwater) sings or plays on one of the records, so I personally consider that a good thing. That's all I turned up.

I did some reading up on the others. Darin Gray is the bass player from Glenn's "On Fillmore" project. And Jim Elkington is with Eleventh Day Dream. (I remember lots of people really liked them when they opened for Wilco during that recent shrinking tour of Chicaago.) And Liam Cunningham is part of the recently disbanded Kids These Days. Didn't Jeff produce something with them?

As for young Spencer, I think he has mentoned somewhere that he's taking a year off between high school and college. Guess we know what he'll be doing with part of that time. He's a brilliant kid and I don't see this as any kind of cheap nepotism.

Well this is huge news & then some...makes me really happy I opted to go all out & get those tickets to Baltimore & D.C., as well as hitting the Pittsburgh show. Wonder when the album will drop? Before the first tour date?
And it actually gave me fresh reason to go to the official website & order those two upcoming shows that they've got available on pre-order- #33 is Detroit, MI from June 5th & #34 is Washington D.C. from June 10th...
Looking at the various press releases on this, you can see each of the major sources using it's own unique pic of Jeff modeling some different & beautiful piece of guitar porn.
Rolling Stone starts it off here with a Fireglo Rickenbacker 360.

Does it make me a bad person if I say I am somewhat disappointed in this? I'd rather have a new Wilco record than a Tweedy solo record and a Loose Fur record.

The clock is ticking.

Personally, I'm excited by the news. As the Wilco lineup and sound has evolved, at the core of it all has been Jeff's terrific songs. So I have to wonder what songs weren't "fit" for Wilco, so to speak, and necessitated a new approach. Is it going to be a pop record? Are they going to jam? Will it be mostly acoustic? More Jeff lead guitar work? Or are we going to hear a wide range of sounds or something we haven't heard from Jeff before? Who knows. To me, it's exciting to think about the possibilities.

I thought The Whole Love was a great album - the best since AGIB - while its two predecessors were only peppered with greatness. For Wilco to grow beyond TWL and figure out where they're headed next, if it means Jeff recording a solo album and the other members diving deeper into their own projects for a period, then so be it.

I hope this won't be his HUMAN TOUCH/LUCKY TOWN move.

Putting this band on too long a hiatus will probably mean curtains for Wilco.

He did.  I think he produced part of their album.  I hadn't realized that they'd already broken up.  They had a ton of hype and lasted about one hot minute.

Exactly. There's nothing like playing with different people to get the creative juices flowing. Jeff & the guys are smart enough to know that. Sure, it may be a while before we see a new Wilco record, but I'm willing to bet it'll be worth the wait. In the meantime, we have all the other projects to enjoy.

And Jim Elkington is with Eleventh Day Dream.

Sorry this is NOT correct. Jim is a talented guitar player who plays with Jon Langford, Horses Ha (check their album from last year out, it is excellent) and a bunch of other bands I can't name off the top of my head. You are thinking of Rick Rizzo. Rick is a bit of a shredder, but Jim is a very nuanced and understated guitar player. He is a regular who shows up with all sorts of Chicago area musicians.
