The concept that there won't be either until 2015 saddens me. As does of course the news about Sue (and the silence since her initial post). If Sue getting better and getting the support she needs from Jeff means no Jeff solo record or Wilco activity, that's fine by me. They have given us a lot of music to enjoy. lost highway Posted February 16, 2014 Share Posted February 16, 2014 Well.... I peek at Wilcoworld every few weeks, even when it doesn't seem like anything's going on. Often they've had their homepage photo from a recording session, long before there is any press about them being in album process. I was curious recently when I saw a small drum kit mic'ed up with a million guitars around it. I thought "There's no way that's Glenn's kit." It reminded me of the minimal kit that Spencer played on the Mavis record. It made me wonder if Spencer was recording more at the Loft. I guess there's your answer. The fact that after 20 years Jeff is slowing down is not a bad thing really. A nice solo album will be great. Look at all the shows that we can see with individual band members. So I take comfort that there will be Wilco in '14. all the members are taking lots of time to do their own things, glad to see that Tweedy will be releasing new music. It's the son in the band thing that weirds me out a little. Phil Lesh has done the same, I've never heard of anyone raving about that configuration of his band. Early June seems a bit too soon for that compared to the UK so I hope he's not dropping out I suppose it's too much to hope for a late summer visit to Europe? - but not the last week of August please.Anyone know anything about the history of the other guys named in the band? I think he's a Brit relocated to Chicago, plays with a band called the Zincs. They're on Thrill Jockey. And Jim Elkington is with Eleventh Day Dream. (I remember lots of people really liked them when they opened for Wilco during that recent shrinking tour of Chicaago.) And Liam Cunningham is part of the recently disbanded Kids These Days. Didn't Jeff produce something with them? As for young Spencer, I think he has mentoned somewhere that he's taking a year off between high school and college. Guess we know what he'll be doing with part of that time. choo-choo-charlie Posted May 19, 2014 Share Posted May 19, 2014 Personally, I'm excited by the news. As the Wilco lineup and sound has evolved, at the core of it all has been Jeff's terrific songs. So I have to wonder what songs weren't "fit" for Wilco, so to speak, and necessitated a new approach. Is it going to be a pop record? Are they going to jam? Will it be mostly acoustic? More Jeff lead guitar work? Or are we going to hear a wide range of sounds or something we haven't heard from Jeff before? Who knows. To me, it's exciting to think about the possibilities. I thought The Whole Love was a great album - the best since AGIB - while its two predecessors were only peppered with greatness. For Wilco to grow beyond TWL and figure out where they're headed next, if it means Jeff recording a solo album and the other members diving deeper into their own projects for a period, then so be it. There's nothing like playing with different people to get the creative juices flowing. Jeff & the guys are smart enough to know that. Sure, it may be a while before we see a new Wilco record, but I'm willing to bet it'll be worth the wait. In the meantime, we have all the other projects to enjoy. Jim is a talented guitar player who plays with Jon Langford, Horses Ha (check their album from last year out, it is excellent) and a bunch of other bands I can't name off the top of my head. You are thinking of Rick Rizzo. Rick is a bit of a shredder, but Jim is a very nuanced and understated guitar player. He is a regular who shows up with all sorts of Chicago area musicians.
