Jeff Tweedy solo album?

Recommended Posts

He did.  I think he produced part of their album.  I hadn't realized that they'd already broken up.  They had a ton of hype and lasted about one hot minute.

Here's a little article from Rolling Stone about them and Jeff Tweedy.

Sorry this is NOT correct. Jim is a talented guitar player who plays with Jon Langford, Horses Ha (check their album from last year out, it is excellent) and a bunch of other bands I can't name off the top of my head. You are thinking of Rick Rizzo. Rick is a bit of a shredder, but Jim is a very nuanced and understated guitar player. He is a regular who shows up with all sorts of Chicago area musicians.

Yep, I was wrong about Jim Elkington--chalk it up to sloppy googling. I actually wasn't confusing him with anyone, since I'd never heard of him before yesterday's announcement--he was just mentioned in connection with someone from Eleventh Dream Day. But it's good to hear an endorsement of him from one of our musically knowledgeable Chicago area VCers.

poked around a bit on the internet yesterday about the guitarist.  I think he's a Brit relocated to Chicago, plays with a band called the Zincs. They're on Thrill Jockey.  Janet Bean (Freakwater) sings or plays on one of the records, so I personally consider that a good thing. That's all I turned up.

I highly recommend the Horses Ha CD. If this gets more sales on it from his participation with Jeff, so be it. Also he is on Jon Langford's Here be Monsters LP and out on tour with Jon. Another great member of the interconnected Chicago music scene.

Lets face it - the band probably burned out a bit on the songs they performed live for over 18(?) straight months. Unlike Grateful Dead shows, each version of nearly every Wilco song performed live were nearly identical. I get that the songs are complicated, but the lack of variation probably necessitated a long break...

Last thought for today. Jeff isn't that old and few bands ever totally break up even when they should. Wilco will be back, have no fear. This break is a good thing.

I think there's some validity to this as well. I imagine the covers set at Solid Sound was invigorating for them -- gave them something new to tinker with -- and move on from the old warhorses.

A week or two ago when I was wondering if/what kind of activity we'd see from Wilco this year, excluding a few live performances and the murmurings of a Solid Sound DVD, I went poking around in the Roadcase section of the Wilco store. Thought maybe I'd pick up the recordings of the Tweedy solo shows I saw in KC and Denver, or maybe snag a Wilco show I hadn't heard yet. But after looking through the options, I realized that I just don't need another version of "Handshake Drugs" or "I'm the Man Who Loves You," or the 10-12 others that got played every night. I already own all those songs from multiple other shows and the records. I couldn't justify downloading another full show just to pick up 2-3 songs (read: rarities) I don't have in live versions from this lineup. I realized that I'm just burnt out on everything I have.

Which is why a Tweedy solo album with new musicians excites me.

Plus, the new Nels Cline Singers record is tops.

I am happy to report that I am the bassist in the band TWEEDY! Hope to see you all this Summer!

And more details, from Darin's Facebook page:

This has been in the works for awhile and I am happy it has now been announced. I am the bassist in long time friend Jeff Tweedy's new band TWEEDY. I have been friends with Jeff since we were teenagers and it makes being in this band an extra special experience. TWEEDY also includes Spencer Tweedy (drums), Jim Elkington (guitar, vocals), Liam Cunningham (guitar, keyboards, vocals), & of course, Jeff Tweedy (vocals, guitar).

Making this band extra special is that I've known Spencer since he was born & I've gotta say I am super proud of how far he has advanced as a musician. From the initial rehearsals we had an immediate connection and I am excited to hear how far we can take this rhythm section and this music in general once we hit the road. It is definitely beyond surreal looking over and seeing/hearing this grown man playing drums (not to mention guiding and directing the band from behind them!) that I remember as a baby. Hard to put into words the feeling. Strange in a great way.

I literally met Liam & Jim at our first rehearsal. And again, the connection was immediate. It definitely felt like we had known each other for years. These guys are fantastic and it's such a relief to know these guys have my/our backs.

It's a strange thing being sort of put together by someone else and it's one of the best feelings in the world when it all just gels together like this band did. Excited for this Summer and excited for fans of Jeff's music to hear a bunch of new songs that he and Spencer created & with a whole new band. I'm sure I will post way too many things about this so be forewarned.

Extra special thanks to Jeff Tweedy, the band TWEEDY, all at TMM, Lakland Basses & Aguilar Amplification (more on this soon), & especially Mark Greenberg for his endurance and going beyond the call helping me through this transition. I've been friends with Mark for probably 25 years now. It's an extra special gift to get to spend so much time with him these last few months.

So here we go, will keep you posted with more dates and news as they arrive. This tour takes me to some new places and some I've been too many times. Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. Help me spread the word so friends outside of this circle will know andI can have a chance to connect/reconnect with them.

I think this is great.  Like the Jerry Garcia Band.  Another project to stretch one's legs and explore some different avenues.  All of the other members of Wilco have had side projects before and during Wilco, a Tweedy project is overdue.  It was good for the Grateful Dead, it will be good for Wilco.

There was a time when side projects were frowned up - or even "banned" - during those early formative years. Bennett, Stirratt and Coomer had the Courtesy Move project, and Bennett started doing some production work until TM told him to stop "wh*ring around the Wilco sound." There was some resentment from the rest of the band, particularly because Jeff was dipping his toes in other waters with Golden Smog that whole time. It's in the Kot book.

I'm glad the Wilco corporation has a different stance on that now.

LouieB, Jim Elkington does in fact play with Eleventh Dream Day and has for over two years ALONG WITH founding guitarist Rick Rizzo.

Well this is huge news & then some...makes me really happy I opted to go all out & get those tickets to Baltimore & D.C., as well as hitting the Pittsburgh show. Wonder when the album will drop? Before the first tour date?

And it actually gave me fresh reason to go to the official website & order those two upcoming shows that they've got available on pre-order- #33 is Detroit, MI from June 5th & #34 is Washington D.C. from June 10th...

Looking at the various press releases on this, you can see each of the major sources using it's own unique pic of Jeff modeling some different & beautiful piece of guitar porn.

Rolling Stone starts it off here with a Fireglo Rickenbacker 360... http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/jeff-tweedy-stepping-out-on-his-own-with-solo-album-tour-20140518

Spin also goes for the Fireglo Rickenbacker 360... http://www.spin.com/articles/wilco-jeff-tweedy-solo-album-tour-announce/

Consequence Of Sound goes with his classic blonde "Bob" Gibson J-200 (he has another one- "Buck")... http://consequenceofsound.net/2014/05/jeff-tweedy-announces-debut-solo-album-new-tour-dates/

That's a gorgeous Rickenbacker.  Stoked for this news.

Remember that one-off thing he did with Deerhoof just before The Whole Love was released? Here's a link to Behold Jeff Tweedy in the Darkness

And there's this

Interesting experiments, but hopefully this was part of the evolving creative process. Maybe it gives an indication of the direction they're heading in, though.

And Liam Cunningham is part of the recently disbanded Kids These Days. Didn't Jeff produce something with them?

Liam is a kick ass musician who has a new band named Marrow. They've only released a two song EP but I saw them live at Shuba's and they killed it. One of the best shows I've ever seen. If you're interested you can find both of their songs in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eNITD0v6pg. I recommend it, I can certainly here a wilco influence.

Okay if you say so. I have not seen them in two years and I know Mark Greenberg is on keyboards. My bad.

There are have been lots of second guitarists play with them including Tim Rutili of Califone. once again. I guess I am mistaken.

I love how that page shows that it's a song called "Behold a Raccoon in the Darkness" by Deerhoof/The Raccoonists, but in order to play it you have to click a link that says "Behold Jeff Tweedy in the Darkness."

I mean, I like Jeff and all, but not really sure I want to behold him in the darkness.

With the recent big announcements of solo album & new band on tour with Jeff, it's worth noting that the forthcoming Roadcase Shows #33 & #34 are up for pre-order.
Both of these will be from from this Jeff Tweedy solo/TWEEDY electric band tour & are available now for pre-order, with #33 being from the tour opener June 5th in Detroit & #34 from the June 10th Washington D.C. show.
Since it appears to be a bit shorter tour (though who knows if it'll get extended once the album is out) this is a great way for folks to hear both the new band, & the new material live.

Hey, that's cool. I wonder if the live shows will come out before the solo album is released. But why the pre-order with a digital product? It's not like they're going to run out. Couldn't one just wait until the shows are posted in the Roadcase and order them then?
