Solid Sound Live Broadcast June 28

Maybe if this proves embarrassing enough for folks, the concept will be shelved in the future.

A better idea would have been to have a karaoke event as a side attraction somewhere on-site, and have various musicians make surprise appearances.  Suppose you sign up to sing a song, and right when the song starts a curtain opens and there's Glenn or Nels playing the song with you.

I’ll embarrass myself just for you, just so you can get what you want.

Or you can show some empathy for people who may not have even been on stage before and cheer and hope it goes well for them. Better yet, keep your comments to yourself.

I don't think I will keep my comments to myself.  I'll say whatever I want, within the bounds of the rules of this forum, and you can either like it, dislike it, ignore it, challenge me to change it, or respond however you want.  But I will not agree to keep my comments to myself.

If I had insulted a specific performance, or someone directly, you'd have a point.  But I didn't do that.

You are openly hoping people will embarrass themselves.

I thought the poster was referencing the band and their management fwiw

Still hoping people will embarrass themselves is a bad attitude to take over a festival that’s supposed to be a joyous thing.

Embarrassing yourself in karaoke is inherent and is done willingly.  It's part of the deal.  Empathy is not warranted.

But to be clear, I was not cheering/hoping for people to embarrass themselves.  On the contrary, I would prefer they not be given the opportunity to do that i the first place.  At least not on the main stage.   I was not hoping for embarrassment, I was bemoaning what I think is a disappointing gimmick.  That's why I offered what I think would have been a potentially good gimmick.

What do you think would cause more buzz in the audience or on this forum:

"Did you hear that guy sing Casino Queen?  He did a really good job."

Or

"Did you hear that Jonathan Richman and the singer from The Feelies joined in with someone at karaoke?"

This.

Go. Have a good time. Sing along with the karaoke folks. Enjoy the damn music. It’s not complicated. If you sit there grumpy it doesn’t do anything for anybody, and probably sours your mood— just enjoy it for what it is.

Am I jealous as hell for those selected? Yup.

Am I sad as hell I can’t be there? Yup.

Do I wish folks egg on their faces? Fuck no, unless it’s breakfast.

I hope everybody nails it and has a blast!

I thought my point was pretty clear, but I guess not.  I mean, I am advocating FOR karaoke.  Just in a different (and imo, MORE fun) format.

Anyone who fears they might do a bad job shouldn't have jumped through all the hoops to get on stage.  This isn't a school production where everyone, including the severely insecure kids, are forced to dance and sing in front of the whole school.  I think it's safe to say that anyone who has been selected (or even hoped to get selected) to sing is confident enough in themselves that they can laugh it off if they aren't great.

I hope everyone has fun, and I'm looking forward to the recap/highlight reel.

Jeff’s reply to whether or not there would be some surprises on Friday night during the karaoke set: “there might be some ringers”. I take that as special surprise musical guests filling in on lead vocals.

A few more tidbits from the interviews today:

I think the band is going to be wearing deep blue jeans on Friday night. They wouldn’t reveal the significance of it, but it sounds like Nudie suits 2019. Either Pat or John talked about the company that makes them. My stream dropped during that part.

Glenn just confirmed that there would be another Solid Sound in 2021. He also nonchalantly dropped that they recorded an album over the 18 month break. I mean, it was extremely quick. The station is now playing the album version of I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.

Edit: ooh! This guy is grilling him (Glenn) about the new record! lol! Supposedly the management team gave him the evil eye when he mentioned that.

I’m remembering this the best that I can....

Is the new record recorded? Yes.

Will the new record be available at Solid Sound? No.

Will the new record be released this year? I’m not at liberty to say.

Will you perform the new record in its entirety? No.

Is the new record called The Empire Strikes Back? No.

Will you perform some songs from the new record? I can’t comment on that.
