  1. Huge fan! I've never seen him front a project, but was blessed enough to see him a few times with The Everly Brothers...and...oddly enough, way back when...Muddy Waters was opening for Eric Clapton in 1979 & Albert Lee was in Clapton's band & I got to see him that night too. I'm a huge Dave Edmunds fan, but I think the coolest solo ever on any Edmunds album (& I bet Dave would agree) is Albert's work on "Sweet Little Lisa"!

Yeah - absolutely. I don't think Albert has played Sweet Little Lisa live for some time unfortunately.

  2. Any Albert Lee fans here?

IMHO this guy is seriously under rated or at least under exposed.

He's nearly 70 and every time I see him his playing just gets better - great voice too. I like it that whilst he's noted as one of the hottest country players out there he is more about country rock/rock and roll and definitely not country and western!

He's on tour in Britain at the moment - plays Stafford Gatehouse Theatre this Wednesday. (26th Sept)

  3. Aw, how can anyone dislike PS I Love You? :heartbroken :heartbroken

When I was growing up I was always into the mid-late era (cooler) period Beatles but in recent times I find myself moved to tears by some of the early tracks.

Anyway, here's my mixtape of Beatles C sides :

    Act Naturally

    Ask Me Why

    Boys

Can't Buy Me Love (I really do not like this song)

    Eight Days A Week

Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby

    From Me To You

Get Back (just irritates me enough to make the list)

I Don't Want To Spoil The Party

    I'll Cry Instead

    It's All Too Much

I've Just Seen A Face (not the biggest fan of this)

    Kansas City

    Love Me Do

    Michelle

    One After 909

Revolution 9 (Although I often put this on when paiting the house)

    Tell Me Why

The Ballad of John & Yoko

The Inner Light (Sorry, I love George but..)

    The Long & Whining Road

    What's the New Mary Jane

    Yer Blues

    Words of Love

  4. I went to a show at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel in Providence 4-24-2002 when they were still a 4 piece with Leroy. I believe it was the first show following YHF's proper release. They opened with Not for the Season, which I had never heard until that point. Wow - I have never been blown away hearing a song for the first time in concert like I was with that tune. Raw is the best way to describe it, with Jeff slashing at his guitar and Glenn playing a tribal beat. The rest of the night they focussed mostly on YHF tunes, describing the new album in between song banter as a "hard worker". It must have been cathartic for the band to finally see the album released.

Yes - I like that rawness. Stripping everything down with a slight feeling that "anything could happen/it could fall apart at any minute".

    Leroy was great in Wilco.

(ps. I love your avatar BillLee!)

  5. Well, I was just about to alter my moniker to Hyphen Envy but, alas, it's taken. Such a good song title!

I might try again as Hyphen-Envy.

In the meantime C-C-C, bonus points for the way you slipped those two R.E.M. song titles into your previous post - and all off the same LP no less.

  6. Um, ok. 27 posts.

Ok. Well, seeing as you are coming off as being pretty humourless by posting "Nice name" in the first place and your previous reply :

Check my status. I joined this board some time before you with this user name. 2005 to be precise.

I actually recall messaging you to say you'd (accidentally) adopted my user name (but you obviously didn't care to change it.)

    28 posts now. Big deal.

    Seriously, grow up.

  7. Hi - sorry if this has been discussed before.

Does anyone remember the period just after Leroy left the band when they were down to a 4 piece and Jeff was supposedly using a laptop (at his feet?) presumably for some of the noise/fx.

I wonder if anyone can provide more info about what the laptop was actually used for etc?

I have a few old recordings of that era and really like the sparse sound.

  8. Jay's rendition of My Darling on the DVD is great.

Don't dislike the Summerteeth version either.

I always thought it was quite sad that Wilco didn't pay a proper tribute to Jay in the form of a concert.

Re. Glenn - I much prefer his mini-kit work with Loose Fur. He's a great drummer who I think is even better when faced with less things to hit!

Saying that - the standing on the drum stool party piece doesn't impress.

  9. Hmmm...great visuals but I wasn't impressed by the mix. Specifically, Nels' guitar was way too loud in places - louder than Jeff's vocal.

Without getting into an argument over Nels' guitar playing - which I am not going to - it just annoys me when engineers forget that the vocal is King.

Nels' parts, I feel, are best enjoyed sparingly and never made too obvious (ie. loud!)

I wonder if TV remixed this concert from the multi tracks as can often happen (!) Surely Stan Doty would never have placed Nels' that high in the live mix?

  10. I was looking forward to getting Wilco (the album) on vinyl after being disappointed with the mastering job on the CD.

It turned up today and I agree it really is like night and day - the whole album takes on a new perspective, more so than any other vinyl album of theirs when compared to the CD.

Whilst some of the songs are far from my favourite Wilco tracks, the depth to the sound is compelling and contrary to some other opinion I find the production to be most agreeable. I'm also glad they stuck to a single LP rather than 2 slabs of vinyl. I prefer listening to single length albums in two parts.

The quality of packaging is excellent with a 60s style very thick board and pasted on inner. This is what all record companies should be doing with their new releases.

I wonder if a vinyl reissue can actually make Summerteeth finally SOUND decent!?!

  12. I was thinking 100 was probably too low - since it is possibly an ongoing deal. I see what you are saying.

The answer to the ongoing problem facing the record industry is staring them in the face :

    Vinyl albums.

By far the most enjoyable and true listening experience, it's still a format prized by serious music fans. Not forgetting the fact that you get proper sized artwork.

My copy of After the Goldrush is pretty worn but I wouldn't trade its pops and crackles and warmth for any Blu-Ray/2496 format.

Think how much money's been spent converting people to the idea that iPods are the be all and end all.

If they put their marketing budgets and energies they wasted into fighting mp3 pirates into a complete relaunch and remarket of vinyl as a leading format then they could help themselves.

Embrace mp3 as a convenient, lower quality format useful for promotional purposes only. If listeners like what they hear, they could get the proper LP. LPs are very unlikely to be pirated. Sure you can tape an LP or dub it onto mp3/wav/cd but the listening experience is not the same as actually dropping the stylus onto the album.

Fantastic turntables are available for little more than the price of a full sized iPod.

The future is the past !
